Soccer: Caps blow through Wakefield

Broughton's men soccer team extended their current win streak  to four by defeating Wakefield 6-1.  It was a very entertaining game, but the Caps put this one out of reach early.   Two minutes into the contest, AJ Iiames flew high above the Wakefield defense and headed a throw-in from Lassiter Tollison just inside the far post to give the Caps the lead for good.  The second goal was scored eleven minutes later. JK Tikvart passed the ball perfectly from the left wing to Forrest Lasso who had broken open in the middle of the field.  Lasso struck the ball cleanly into the left corner of the goal.  With ten minutes remaining in the half, the Wakefield keeper had moved 10-15 yards off his line to make a pass to his defender when Tikvart stole the ball and nailed the open goal from 25 yards out.  With 3 minutes remaining in the half, the goal of the game was scored by Luke Janes.  Janes was able to get his head on a corner from Tollison and redirect the ball straight up.  As the ball came down, Janes ripped a beautiful volley from 20 yards out past the keeper, giving the Caps a 4-0 halftime lead.  Matt Franciosi had another good game in goal, coming off his line at just the right time to keep Wakefield's scoring opportunities shut-down.

The second half allowed the Broughton backups to get significant playing time.  Reserve keeper Everett McCord, made an acrobatic save 9 minutes into the half.  The corner that followed was also put on frame and McCord made another nice save.  Six minutes later, Wakefields forward was able to break free on the the wing and put a shot into the goal for their only goal of the evening.

With 12 minutes remaining in the contest, Lasso redirected a corner just inside the near post for his second goal of the night.  The Caps third keeper of the evening, Grant Bishop, made a great save with 3 minutes left in the game.  The Caps scored their last goal with 35 seconds remaining in the match when Cenorino Martinez worked to get himself open and finished the shot for his first goal of the year.

Monday night at 6:30pm, the Caps will host Sanderson in another conference battle.  Both teams have a 4-2 conference record and are tied for third.  Come out and cheer the Caps on to their fifth straight victory!

Soccer: Caps win at Heritage

CJ Tickvart works the ball through the defense.
The men's soccer team continued their winning ways Monday night at Heritage High School posting a 5-1 victory.  Heritage High School is a new school in the Cap8 and currently only has a freshman and sophomore class.  Although outmanned, Heritage played the entire match with energy.

The best goal of the match was the first.  CJ Tickvart placed a beautiful shot careening off of the top post and into the net.  The Heritage keeper never had a chance to stop the shot.  The scoring continued throughout the night, with the last two Broughton goals coming from headers.

Coach Hernandez was again able to give quality playing time to his back-ups.  All four keepers on the roster played well.  The lone goal was allowed in the second half when the Caps' keeper came out to grab a cross and was knocked off balance by one of his defenders.  The ball fell in front of the open goal and Zachary Irwin was able to finish it.

The victory moves the Caps over .500 in the conference for the first time this season with a 3-2 record.  The next match is Wednesday, 6:30pm at Wakefield.  Wakefield is dangerous.  Two weeks ago, they tied conference leader Millbrook for the Pride's only conference blemish this season.

Soccer: Pace's Hat Trick Leads to Victory Over Enloe

John Pace scores 3 goals versus Enloe.
For the second time this week, the men's soccer team from Broughton looked like they wanted to play.  The energy level on the field started low, but built as the first half progressed.  The first half included John Pace's first hat trick of the season and led to a 5-1 conference victory for the Caps.

The scoring began in the 2nd minute when Pace took a pass from Lassiter Tollison and gently rolled it into the goal.  The shot looked like a change-up in baseball and proved to be effective.  Enloe did not get down.  Six minutes later, Enloe was able to find an opening in the Broughton defense and cross a ball into the box, where it seemed to remain for 10 seconds before Ian Hoffman put it into the net.  The Caps recaptured the lead for good in 12th minute when keeper Matt Franciosi hit Tollison on a deep run behind the Enloe defense.  Six minutes later a PK was awarded to Pace after he was taken out in the box while waiting on a cross from the right wing.  Pace placed the kick nicely in the left corner to extend the Caps lead to 3-1.  Pace finished the half with a nice shot in the 39th minute of the game, wrapping up his hat trick.  As usual, Franciosi performed well throughout the first half keeping several nice shots out of goal.

The second half the Caps did a good job maintaining their focus and energy.  Coach Hernandez was able to go deep into his bench in the second half promoting enthusiastic play throughout the half.  Everett McCord started the second half in goal and Grant Bishop relieved him late in the half.  Both performed well.  The last goal of the night was scored with 8 minutes remaining in the contest.  Pace was moving quickly through the midfield with the ball when an Enloe midfielder collided with him.  The Enloe player went down, Pace did not.  The referee did not blow his whistle nor signal play on, but most of the Enloe players stopped.  Pace proceded to retrieve the ball from the deep right corner of the attacking third.  Tollison and CJ Tikvart moved down the middle to support Pace, who crossed the ball perfectly.  The defense converged on Tollison, who dummied the ball leaving Tickvart with a nice look at goal, which he nailed.

Despite two starters nursing injuries on the sidelines, the Caps played well.  This result leaves both Broughton and Enloe tied with Sanderson for third in the Cap8 with a 2-2 conference record.  Next week, Broughton plays twice in Wake Forest.  The Caps are at Heritage High Monday night and at Wakefield High Wednesday.  Both matches begin at 6:30pm.

Goals: ENL--C.Hoffman 1; BRO--J.Pace 3, C.Tikvart 1, L.Tollison 1.

Soccer: Capitals Roll against WF-R

Starting the game like a team determined to win, the Broughton men dominated Monday night's match with Wake Forest-Rolesville from start to finish.  The players seem to be energized after the weekend break and played well the entire match.

Jon Pace started the shooting by hitting the right post, shortly after kick-off.  But unlike recent matches for the Caps, that was the last post hit.  Lassiter Tollison served a corner to the back post for Forest Lasso to drill into the net for the first goal of the contest.  Within minutes, Pace put a nice shot on goal.  Although blocked by the WF-R keeper, the ball continued to roll toward the open net where Tollison finished it.  The last goal of the half came when Lasso hit Tollison in stride with a beautiful long pass and Tollison placed the shot around the keeper.  WF-R did score in the first half when an aggressive forward was fed a nice pass and was able to get it past Broughton's Matt Franciosi.  Although the striker was 3 yards offsides, the assistant referee was not able to make the call and the goal was counted.

The Caps did not let down in the second half.  The first goal of the second half was a great 20 yard shot from Lasso.  After colliding near midfield with a WF-R defender, Lasso accelerated around the right side of the defense and placed a nice shot in the upper left corner of the goal.  The fifth goal was another well-struck shot by CJ Tikvart following a throw into the box.  And the sixth goal for the Caps was the result of a fantastic cross from the right wing by Cenorino Martinez to Andre Fortune.  Fortune hit a solid shot past the keeper to wrap up scoring for the Caps.

Coach Hernandez was able to get most of the team on the field in the second half for significant playing time.  The starters earned the break, and the backup players performed well.  The second WF-R goal made it to the net as time expired.

The Caps next match is at home Wednesday night versus Enloe.  Enloe comes into the match tied for third in the Cap8 with a 2-1 record, while the Caps are currently tied for fifth with a 1-2 conference record.  Plan to come out for the 6:30pm match to cheer the Caps on to their second conference victory.

Soccer: Caps fade away in second half.

Friday's home soccer match with Leesville Road was the best of times and it was the worst of times.  The Caps completely controlled the first half of the match and then came out in the second half lifeless, allowing the Leesville Road team to take the conference win, 2-1.

The first half of the match, the Caps played great.  The team pushed into the attacking third as a group, made runs, made passes and scored.  The first goal was scored by Brian Haines.  Brian was one of two attackers available to receive the serve from Lassiter Tollison.  Multiple attackers were in the attacking third much of the half.  The result was lots of opportunities, but only the one goal.  The half ended with the Caps up 1-0.

Leesville came out energized after the half and was able to keep the ball in their attacking third.  It was only a matter of time before Fernando Castellanos  and Brandon Arostegui scored.  Playing with a 2-1 deficit, the Caps played with a greater sense of urgency, but were unable to get the tying goal.

This result leaves Broughton 0-2 in league while Leesville is now 2-0 in the conference.  Come out to Broughton to support the Caps as they go for their first conference victory Monday at 6:30pm against Wake Forest-Rolesville.

Goals: LVL--F Castellanos 1, B. Arostegui 1; BRO--B.Haines 1.
Assists: LVL--M.Atogi 2; BRO--L.Tollison 1.

LAX: Broughton needs girls LAX coach

High School OT.com - Broughton needs girls LAX coach

Soccer: Caps and East Chapel Hill play to a tie.

Broughton men's soccer escaped from East Chapel Hill with an uninspired 1-1 tie against a very solid team. ECH was very active on both the defensive and offensive ends, collecting a large number of both fouls and offsides. Broughton was able to withstand the active ECH attack thanks to a great game by keeper Matt Franciosi.

The only Broughton goal was scored with 15 minutes remaining in the contest. John Pace found Lassiter Tollison moving inside the 18 with a great pass. Tollison got himself free of a defender before putting the go ahead goal high in the net.

Within 5 minutes, ECH was able to steal the ball in the midfield and break through the defense. Franciosi made a great block of the initial shot on goal, but Jake Weinshank was able to put away the follow-up.

The result brings the Caps' record to 3-2-2 as the conference season opens Tuesday at Millbrook. Millbrook comes into the match with a 5-0-1 record, including a 1-0 victory this week over East Wake, who the Caps played last week to a scoreless tie.
