Soccer: Caps Win Cap8 Tournament!

The Broughton men's soccer team finished the conference season last night with a solid 3-1 victory over Leesville High to claim the Cap 8 Tournament Championship for the 5th consecutive year.  The game was won by the outstanding team effort and extended the Caps current win streak to 8.

The game was played on a very wet, and in spots, a very sloppy field.  Puddles were spread across the field which would stop the ball immediately upon contact.  The first five minutes of the game, it appeared both teams were learning how they were going to play the game around and over the water.

Leesvillle started the scoring 10 minutes into the match when they found an opening in the defense, leaving Caps' keeper, Everett McCord, little chance for the save.  The Caps answered a minute later, when a ball served from the right wing was deflected in the box by Forrest Lasso and finished by AJ Iiames to tie the score.

Most of the remaining half, Broughton controlled the ball.  With 35 seconds remaining in the half, a foul was called on Leesville from 45 yards out.  With 10 seconds remaining in the half, Lassiter Tollison served a perfect ball to the far post, just out of reach of the keeper where Forrest Lasso headed it cleanly into the net, for the winning goal with 6 seconds remaining in the half.

There was no let down for the Caps in the second half.  The team played with the intensity they rediscovered two weeks ago which began this winning streak, and it served them well the second half.  The Caps controlled the ball and had many nice scoring opportunities.   Leesville had a few good scoring opportunities as well, but all were snuffed out by a stingy defense and Caps' keeper McCord.  McCord played his fourth great game in a row, subbing for the injured starter Matt Franciosi.

The Caps' frustration at the net was finally ended with 5:00 minutes remaining in the game.  An outlet pass to the left wing following a Leesville corner was carried by Tollison across midfield.  He played the ball to a streaking CJ Tikvart on the left wing, who then sent a perfect pass to John Pace rushing the middle.  Pace ripped the ball into the net for the final score.  The victory celebration began!

This was a great victory for a team that struggled mid-season, but for the past two weeks looks like a team ready to win the state.  The Caps are playing with the skill and speed they had early season, but with a new found intensity.  Their first game in the state tournament will be early next week at Broughton.

Soccer: Capitals Control WF-R, 4-2; Finals 6:30pm Thursday.

The Caps started the night with good speed and lots of pressure.  The first goal was scored 2 minutes into the game when CJ Tikvart received a nice ball from Brian Haines on the right wing and carried it toward the near post.  CJ cut back left, losing his defender and hitting a nice left footed goal.

The Caps kept the ball in their attacking third for much of the first half.  Although missing out on really nice opportunities and having 10-12 shots on goal, the first half ended with the the Caps leading 1-0.

The second half began just as the first half ended.  The Caps controlled the play of the game, continuing to shoot on goal.  About nine minutes into the half, WF-R took the ball toward the Broughton goal and the defense was unable to clear it.  After bouncing around for 60-90 seconds in the Caps defensive third, WF-R was able to score from the left wing on a nice shot by Alex Bidwell.

But the tie did not last long.  Less than two minutes later, Lassiter Tollison receives a ball on the left wing and cut it just inside the left corner of the penalty box where he ripped it into the side netting at the far post.  Nice momentum changer.

The Broughton midfield and defense kept the ball in the attacking third and five minutes later John Pace received a ball on the left wing and fed Tollison in the center of the penalty area where he slipped the ball past the keeper, stretching the Caps lead to 3-1.

But WF-R was not willing to quit.  With nine minutes left in the game, a long ball was sent toward the Caps goal that flew over the keeper and landed at the feet of Bidwell who finished it for his second goal of the night.

The Caps went back on attack.  Taylor Birdsall stopped the ball from his defensive position and passed and moved until he was at the left corner of the field.  He passed the ball back to Tollison on the left wing who sent the ball to Forrest Lasso's head as he raced through the box, where he headed into the net giving the Caps their 4-2 lead.

Come to Broughton at 6:30pm Thursday night to watch Broughton defend their Conference Tournament Crown against Leesville.

Soccer: Caps beat Enloe 3-1, meets WF-R Tuesday at 7pm

The Broughton men's soccer team defeated Enloe in the first round of the Cap 8 tournament. Solid play throughout the game allowed the Caps to control play through most of the match.

Scoring began early when Forrest Lasso headed a ball into the box and AJ Iiames redirected toward the goal. The Enloe keeper tried to stop the ball, but Brian Haines redirected the ball into the back of net.

Within 10 minutes, Enloe won a corner kick. Enloe's Hoffman put a nice ball on the near post. In an attempt to clear the ball, a Broughton player redirected the ball into his own goal to tie the game.

The Caps seemed to slow down after the own goal, losing their energy and shape they had used so well earlier in the match.

The second half the Caps picked it back up. Six minutes into the half, AJ Iiames made a nice goal, energizing the home team. The final goal for the Caps was scored by John Pace, who broke free in front of the goal about 18 yards out and ripped a beautiful shot past the Enloe keeper.

The victory is the sixth straight for Broughton. The Caps host Wake Forest - Rolesville at 7pm Tuesday in the semi-final match. Leesville plays Sanderson at Broughton at 5pm Tuesday in the other semi-final match. Come out and support the streaking Capitals!!

Soccer: Men play Enloe in first round of Cap8

Friday night, the Broughton men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-2 victory over Millbrook.  The win puts the Caps in 3rd place in the conference, behind first place Leesville and Millbrook.

The Caps came out hot, getting some nice shots on goal early and controlling the ball well.  But the scoring began 14 minutes into the match when Millbrook's Chauncy Cleveland made a nice shot from the right wing. The goal took alot of the fire out of the Cap's attack for the rest of the half.

The halftime break, recharged the Capitals.  The Caps attacked payed off with 21 left in the game, when Forrest Lasso picked up a ball at about 25 yards out and nailed a shot inside the right post.  The ball appearred to glance off of a player in the box veering slightly to the right away from Millbrook's keeper, who was frozen.

Two minutes later, Lassiter Tollison was cutting through the box toward the right post and shot the ball toward the left post for the go ahead goal.  But the Caps were not finished scoring.  Just 5 minutes later, Andre Fortune hit a great shot from the right wing, ripping past the keeper. This goal was enough for Coach Hernandez to send 8 of his starters to the bench and give some of his other players some exciting playing time.

Millbrook was able to score again with 6:20 remaining in the match, but the Capitals held on for a nice 3-2 victory.   The Caps play Enloe at Broughton Monday night at 6:30pm in the first round of the Cap8 tournament.  The winner of the match will play at Broughton Tuesday night at 7pm.

Soccer: Caps Sweep Sanderson - Play Millbrook Thursday!

For the fourth time in 7 days, Broughton's men soccer team has played really well.  Wednesday night, the Caps travelled to Sanderson and came away with a 4-2 victory and sole possession of third place in the conference.

The match began with the Caps controlling most of the early play.   The Spartans committed to a defensive posture the entire game.  But 29 minutes into the match, the Spartans cleared the ball to the left wing, where Lassiter Tollison served it off of the outside of his foot, bending it to the far post, where Forrest Lasso went high to head in the first goal of the night.  Earlier this week, Lasso committed to play soccer at Wofford College.

Six minutes later, Sanderson evened the score when Freddie Woodward made his first goal of the season.  Woodward hit a powerful, low shot to the far post from 12 yards, leaving keeper Matt Franciosi no chance for the save.

Just minutes later, Tollison put a long throw at the near post where A.J. Iiames headed it just inside the post, forcing it through a defender and past the Sanderson keeper.  It was a great goal by Iiames giving the Caps a 2-1 lead at halftime.

One minute into the second half, Blair Capel made a really nice play to get the ball away from a Sanderson attacker.  Unfortunately for the Caps, the center referee called it a foul and gave the Spartans a free kick from 22 yards.  Costin Gregory bent the free kick around the Broughton wall and hit the far post.  The ball then ricocheted off the post and landed at Burt Driscoll's feet.  Driscoll put the ball into the net, tying the game 2-2.

Just two minutes later, Tollison threw another ball into the box.  Lasso deflected it across the face of the net where Iiames was again able to head it into the net.  Another good goal that put momentum back on the Caps' side.

The scoring ended 51 minutes into the game when C.J. Tikvart took a nice pass from Tollison on the right wing, Tikvart then moved right, then cut back left leaving the Sanderson defender on the ground.  At that point,  Tikvart hit a great left foot shot into the goal.

The Caps did a good job limiting the Spartans opportunities for the remaining 29 minutes of the match to seal the victory.  The win is the fourth in a row for the Caps and gives them good momentum before hosting second place Millbrook at 6:30pm, Thursday night at Broughton.  The Caps are hoping to avenge their first conference loss of the season to the Wildcats.

Soccer: Men Win on Senior Night

Monday night, Broughton's men soccer team came out ready to win their Senior Night.  Immediate pressure on Wakefield's goal resulted in a foul in the penalty box 2 minutes into the match.  John Pace struck the PK to give the Caps the early lead.  Within a minute, Lassiter Tollison doubled the lead by ripping a shot near post that deflected off of a defender and into the net.

The two goals seemed to motivate the Wolverines, because the next 25 minutes were played mostly in the Broughton half of the field.  The Captials' defense held off the Wakefield attack, until Tollison was given a nice feed on the left wing.  He weaved right, then left, losing the defender and putting a left footed shot in goal at the far post.

Halftime was filled with Senior introductions on the field.  This year's team has 13 seniors.  Through tonight, this class of seniors has a 77-13-7 record.  They've won three consecutive conference regular season and tournament championships and also won the State Championship in 2007.

The halftime festivities were not helpful to the Caps.  Wakefield came out and scored their first goal nine minutes into the half.  Two minutes later, Wakefield scored again to pull within one goal of the Caps.

But that was as close as it would get.  Sixteen minutes into the half, Tollison found Dre Fortune open on the right wing.  Fortune played a sweet one touch chip over the defenders to Pace, who was streaking through the midfield.  Pace placed a great shot past the Wakefield keeper to give the Caps a 4-2 lead.

The play went back and forth for the remainder of the match.  The Caps created some really nice scoring chances that were either just missed or were stopped by the Wakefield keeper.  As time wound down, Wakefield pushed up high trying to score.  With Wakefield defenders pushed up 12 yards beyond midfield, Tollison stood at midfield until AJ Iiames fed him a nice ball into the attacking third.  After beating the keeper, who was playing out in the field, Tollison hit the open goal to complete his hat trick.

It was very entertaining to watch the Caps moving forward as a team and passing the ball while on the attack.  This was the style the Caps used early in the season to control and win games.  It looks like they've remembered how to win, just in time for the playoffs!

Wednesday at 6:30pm, the Caps travel to Sanderson to try to sweep the Spartans for the season.  Thursday night, the Caps play their final regular season game when they host 2nd place Millbrook at 6:30pm.  Come out and support the Caps!

Soccer: Senior Night Begins Last Week of Regular Season

After last week's victories over Heritage and Sanderson, the men's soccer team rolls into the final week of the regular season fourth place in the conference.  Monday night, Senior Night for the Capitals, Wakefield plays at Broughton at 6:30pm.  Wakefield is one of two teams who has beaten conference leader Leesville, so the Caps need to be ready to play their best.  Plan to come out to support the Caps and thank the seniors for a great four years at Broughton.

Wednesday night at 6:30pm, the Caps will travel to Sanderson to attempt to replicate last week's victory over the Spartans.  Sanderson vs Broughton is always a great soccer match.

The final regular season game of the year will be Thursday when second place Millbrook comes to Broughton.  The Caps will be looking for revenge for an early season 2-0 loss.

This week's results determine the seeding not only for next week's conference tournament that begins next Monday, but also the state tournament that begins in two weeks.

Soccer: Men lose a close one.

Tuesday night the men's soccer team came out motivated to play against the Enloe Eagles.  The Caps played well tonight for the entire game, but they had no luck on their side and lost to Enloe 2-1.

The game started with a bang.  Two minutes into the first half, CJ Tikvart crossed a perfect ball from the right wing to John Pace who was moving into the box.  Pace struck the ball from 12 yards out and ripped it past the Enloe keeper to give the Caps a quick lead.

Unfortunately, the Capitals were only able to hold the lead for six minutes before an unmarked Charlie Hoffman struck a beautiful volley from a corner kick that Broughton keeper Matt Franciosi had no chance to stop.  The momentum shift was quick and two minutes later, Enloe struck for the go ahead goal.  The Caps left Cameron Burrows open at 9 yards from the goal and he did not miss the opportunity.  Enloe had 3 shots on goal in the first half and they came away with 2 goals.

The remainder of the game, the Caps controlled the ball in their half of the field.  Broughton had numerous shots, crosses that just missed heads or feet, throw-ins on the narrow field and corners that either just missed a head or just missed the goal.  The Caps finished the second half with at least 11 shots on goal and Enloe had none.

But Enloe did enough to win the very physical contest.  Their break away goal was enough to send the Caps home with another conference lost.  It was great to see the Caps moving with the ball and without the ball the entire night.  It was an entertaining game, in spite of the loss.

The Caps loss drops them to fifth in the conference with a 4-5 record, one win behind Enloe's 5-5.  Wednesday at 6:30pm, the Caps host Heritage High.  Thursday night, the Caps will host third place Sanderson.  Please come out and support the Caps this week.

Soccer: Caps lose to Wake Forest-Rolesville in OT

The men's soccer team had it's worst conference loss in at least 6 years Wednesday night, when the Capitals were beaten in overtime by Wake Forest-Rolesville.  This is the same Cougar team that the Caps beat 6-2 a month ago.  WFR deserved the win.  They beat the Caps to almost every ball and played inspired soccer for the entire game.

The first half began with the Caps controlling the ball early and having opportunities, but there was very little energy or emotion from Broughton.  Within 15 minutes, the defensive line fell apart and WFR rolled through for an easy goal.  The Caps answered within 5 minutes with a nice finish from 12 yards by John Pace on a cross from CJ Tikvart. It appeared the Caps had woken from their slumber, but the energy didn't last long.  Confusion between the Caps keeper and defender left the ball in front of an open goal and WFR was able to finish and take a 2-1 lead into the half.

The Caps were able to score early in the second half when Blair Capel finished a corner.  This is where the Caps were surprisingly uninspired.  Instead of building off of the tie game and going on to the victory, the team appeared as listless as ever.  Both teams had chances as the second half ended, but you could sense trouble as the teams came out for OT.

The Caps slowly walked onto the field for OT with their heads down, while WF-R charged the field with high energy screams.  The Cougars energy transferred to a goal about 6 minutes into the first half of OT.  The Caps had several shots on goal, but none found the net.  With a few exceptions, the Caps had no sense of urgency to win the game.  Forwards were not trying to win 50/50 balls.  Midfielders were standing and watching as passes went through.  Defenders could not keep their line.  It was a bad game to witness.

The good news is the game is over!  This team is loaded with talent and they have proven this season that they can play as well as any team in the state.  This class of seniors has 6 regular season games left in their high school career.  I'm confident they will lead the team back to their early season form with high energy, solid defense, movement and passing for numerous goals and victories!

Come out Monday at 6:30pm to watch the Caps defend their conference title against the Enloe Eagles.  It should be fun to watch!
