Soccer: Caps Sweep Sanderson - Play Millbrook Thursday!

For the fourth time in 7 days, Broughton's men soccer team has played really well.  Wednesday night, the Caps travelled to Sanderson and came away with a 4-2 victory and sole possession of third place in the conference.

The match began with the Caps controlling most of the early play.   The Spartans committed to a defensive posture the entire game.  But 29 minutes into the match, the Spartans cleared the ball to the left wing, where Lassiter Tollison served it off of the outside of his foot, bending it to the far post, where Forrest Lasso went high to head in the first goal of the night.  Earlier this week, Lasso committed to play soccer at Wofford College.

Six minutes later, Sanderson evened the score when Freddie Woodward made his first goal of the season.  Woodward hit a powerful, low shot to the far post from 12 yards, leaving keeper Matt Franciosi no chance for the save.

Just minutes later, Tollison put a long throw at the near post where A.J. Iiames headed it just inside the post, forcing it through a defender and past the Sanderson keeper.  It was a great goal by Iiames giving the Caps a 2-1 lead at halftime.

One minute into the second half, Blair Capel made a really nice play to get the ball away from a Sanderson attacker.  Unfortunately for the Caps, the center referee called it a foul and gave the Spartans a free kick from 22 yards.  Costin Gregory bent the free kick around the Broughton wall and hit the far post.  The ball then ricocheted off the post and landed at Burt Driscoll's feet.  Driscoll put the ball into the net, tying the game 2-2.

Just two minutes later, Tollison threw another ball into the box.  Lasso deflected it across the face of the net where Iiames was again able to head it into the net.  Another good goal that put momentum back on the Caps' side.

The scoring ended 51 minutes into the game when C.J. Tikvart took a nice pass from Tollison on the right wing, Tikvart then moved right, then cut back left leaving the Sanderson defender on the ground.  At that point,  Tikvart hit a great left foot shot into the goal.

The Caps did a good job limiting the Spartans opportunities for the remaining 29 minutes of the match to seal the victory.  The win is the fourth in a row for the Caps and gives them good momentum before hosting second place Millbrook at 6:30pm, Thursday night at Broughton.  The Caps are hoping to avenge their first conference loss of the season to the Wildcats.
