Soccer: Men Win on Senior Night

Monday night, Broughton's men soccer team came out ready to win their Senior Night.  Immediate pressure on Wakefield's goal resulted in a foul in the penalty box 2 minutes into the match.  John Pace struck the PK to give the Caps the early lead.  Within a minute, Lassiter Tollison doubled the lead by ripping a shot near post that deflected off of a defender and into the net.

The two goals seemed to motivate the Wolverines, because the next 25 minutes were played mostly in the Broughton half of the field.  The Captials' defense held off the Wakefield attack, until Tollison was given a nice feed on the left wing.  He weaved right, then left, losing the defender and putting a left footed shot in goal at the far post.

Halftime was filled with Senior introductions on the field.  This year's team has 13 seniors.  Through tonight, this class of seniors has a 77-13-7 record.  They've won three consecutive conference regular season and tournament championships and also won the State Championship in 2007.

The halftime festivities were not helpful to the Caps.  Wakefield came out and scored their first goal nine minutes into the half.  Two minutes later, Wakefield scored again to pull within one goal of the Caps.

But that was as close as it would get.  Sixteen minutes into the half, Tollison found Dre Fortune open on the right wing.  Fortune played a sweet one touch chip over the defenders to Pace, who was streaking through the midfield.  Pace placed a great shot past the Wakefield keeper to give the Caps a 4-2 lead.

The play went back and forth for the remainder of the match.  The Caps created some really nice scoring chances that were either just missed or were stopped by the Wakefield keeper.  As time wound down, Wakefield pushed up high trying to score.  With Wakefield defenders pushed up 12 yards beyond midfield, Tollison stood at midfield until AJ Iiames fed him a nice ball into the attacking third.  After beating the keeper, who was playing out in the field, Tollison hit the open goal to complete his hat trick.

It was very entertaining to watch the Caps moving forward as a team and passing the ball while on the attack.  This was the style the Caps used early in the season to control and win games.  It looks like they've remembered how to win, just in time for the playoffs!

Wednesday at 6:30pm, the Caps travel to Sanderson to try to sweep the Spartans for the season.  Thursday night, the Caps play their final regular season game when they host 2nd place Millbrook at 6:30pm.  Come out and support the Caps!
