Wrestling, Gymnastics & Ladies Basketball need fans' help!

We are looking for fans of wrestling, gymnastics and both ladies JV and Varsity basketball to get news reports and schedules on the blog. If you have any interest in helping please contact the blog at BroughtonSports@gmail.com.

This is a very effective way to let the student body and Broughton fanbase know your sports' schedules and insure larger crowds at events. It also provides a great way to report on events from the sports that are otherwise overlooked by the mainstream media.

Please help support these athletes by volunteering. Parents, athletes or interested students work perfectly for these positions. It is really easy! Send us an email and help the athletes!

Soccer: Caps eliminated from State Tourney

Broughton's soccer team was excited to get to play #2 Jordan in the second round of the state tournament Saturday night.  Unfortunately for the Caps, Jordan was ready to play up to their #2 national ranking.

The game started with Jordan's quickness dominating play.  The Caps were able to deny early shots and opportunities, but looked to be a little frantic early.  Fifteen minutes into the match, Jordan's Monbo Bokar put a nice shot into goal from the right wing.

Bokar's goal brought the Caps' midfield and forwards to life.   The Caps mounted several dangerous attacks over the next 10 minutes, but none were able to find the back of the net.

With eleven minutes remaining in the half, Jordan was awarded a free kick from about 20 yards out on the left wing.  The kick was struck well, saved by Caps keeper Everett McCord, but fell at the feet of a waiting Falcon who gave Jordan a 2-0 lead, which they held until the half ended.

In the second half, Jordan seemed to let up on the accelerator.  Although they had fewer opportunities in the second half, they still did a good job of controlling a great deal of the play.  Also like the first half, the Caps had some scoring opportunities that were not finished.

As the game clock wound down, the Caps pushed more players forward trying to break through the Falcons' solid defense.  A nice pass ahead by Jordan allowed them to get an easy goal with a 1:10 remaining in the match, givng Jordan the 3-0 final margin.  Caps' keeper McCord and the defense, played a much better game than the score indicates.  McCord made some great saves tonight, including a PK attempt in the second half.  Jordan has a very potent scoring offense when they play well.

Although the Caps lost this match, Broughton had a really nice season.  Coach Hernandez did another great job leading the Caps through a wild season.  The Caps ended the year with an eight game winning streak, including the Cap 8 Tournament Championship, before running into Jordan Saturday night.  The Caps finished the season with a 16-8-2 record and ranked 11th in the state.

Soccer: Capitals Win Big in Playoffs

The Broughton men's soccer team won 7-2 Tuesday night, in a first round playoff game against Richmond County.  This is the eighth consecutive win for the Caps and propels them to a second round match with Jordan High, currently undefeated and ranked #2 in the state.

Broughton Seniors Celebrate Cap 8 Tourney Championship
won last week by defeating Leesville 3-1 in the finals.
Tuesday's match started with a bang.  Less than 3 minutes into the match, Lassiter Tollison threw a long ball which was redirected off AJ Iiames' head, and put into the net by Forrest Lasso's header.  The keeper had no chance to stop the goal.  Less than a minute later, CJ Tikvart blasted a great shot that the keeper was able to block, but not control.  The ball fell into the box and Tollison put it into the open net.

Nine minutes into the match, Tikvart fed Tollison who put the ball in the far post side netting to give the Caps a 3-0 lead.  Five minutes later, Iiames sent a nice cross from the left wing to the cutting Lasso in the penalty box, who shot the 4th goal of the night.  Less than a minute later, Iiames blasted the keeper with a strong shot that was blocked back at Iiames feet and he put his second attempt in the goal past the keeper giving the Caps a 5-0 lead fifteen minutes into the match.

Richmond County did not come from Rockingham to give up.  With 9 minutes left in the half, they crossed a nice ball from the right wing that was headed into the upper left corner of the net.  Three minutes later, Richmond County had a breakaway and managed their second goal.  The first half ended with the Caps leading 5-2.

The second half was very similar to the first half.  The Caps were able to control play and give most of their team significant playing time.  The scoring continued eleven minutes into the half when Taylor Birdsall attacked from his defensive position to blast a goal past the keeper.  Five minutes later, Brian Haines struck a beautiful volley into the back of the net to end the scoring for the night.

The game was a great playoff victory and has set-up a rematch with #2 Jordan later this week (Saturday, 6pm at Jordan High).  Jordan did beat the Caps 2-1 in the Caps' third match of the season.  The Caps have really picked up their game this past month and when given the chance, the Capitals have avenged every loss they have suffered this season.  The Jordan rematch should me another great contest.
