Soccer: Capitals Win Big in Playoffs

The Broughton men's soccer team won 7-2 Tuesday night, in a first round playoff game against Richmond County.  This is the eighth consecutive win for the Caps and propels them to a second round match with Jordan High, currently undefeated and ranked #2 in the state.

Broughton Seniors Celebrate Cap 8 Tourney Championship
won last week by defeating Leesville 3-1 in the finals.
Tuesday's match started with a bang.  Less than 3 minutes into the match, Lassiter Tollison threw a long ball which was redirected off AJ Iiames' head, and put into the net by Forrest Lasso's header.  The keeper had no chance to stop the goal.  Less than a minute later, CJ Tikvart blasted a great shot that the keeper was able to block, but not control.  The ball fell into the box and Tollison put it into the open net.

Nine minutes into the match, Tikvart fed Tollison who put the ball in the far post side netting to give the Caps a 3-0 lead.  Five minutes later, Iiames sent a nice cross from the left wing to the cutting Lasso in the penalty box, who shot the 4th goal of the night.  Less than a minute later, Iiames blasted the keeper with a strong shot that was blocked back at Iiames feet and he put his second attempt in the goal past the keeper giving the Caps a 5-0 lead fifteen minutes into the match.

Richmond County did not come from Rockingham to give up.  With 9 minutes left in the half, they crossed a nice ball from the right wing that was headed into the upper left corner of the net.  Three minutes later, Richmond County had a breakaway and managed their second goal.  The first half ended with the Caps leading 5-2.

The second half was very similar to the first half.  The Caps were able to control play and give most of their team significant playing time.  The scoring continued eleven minutes into the half when Taylor Birdsall attacked from his defensive position to blast a goal past the keeper.  Five minutes later, Brian Haines struck a beautiful volley into the back of the net to end the scoring for the night.

The game was a great playoff victory and has set-up a rematch with #2 Jordan later this week (Saturday, 6pm at Jordan High).  Jordan did beat the Caps 2-1 in the Caps' third match of the season.  The Caps have really picked up their game this past month and when given the chance, the Capitals have avenged every loss they have suffered this season.  The Jordan rematch should me another great contest.
