Caps Fall to Garner in Athens Final

A frigid shooting start to open the game proved to be too much to overcome as the Caps fell to the Trojans 77-69. The Caps fell behind 23-0 in the 1st, and managed to go into the half down 43-22.

The Caps made a rally in the third, cutting the lead to 8 with 1:45 remaining in the quarter, but that's as close as it would get until the final score.

Caps JV Cagers Advance to Final

The Caps Boys JV advanced to the finals of the Athens tourney with a 49-34 victory of the host Jags. Defense was again the theme of the night, with the Caps full court pressure leading to some easy scores. Vonshae Lewis chipped in two three pointers for a 12-6 1st quarter lead.

The 2nd featured more of the same as Athens played a 2-3 zone in an effort to slow the potent Caps attack. Kyle Johnston drew 2 charges, and the defensive pressure applied by the Caps insured that Athens got no closer than the 27-20 halftime score. The Caps will play Garner tomorrow night for the title.

Scoring: Lewis 11, Johnston 8, Robinson 6, Mohamed 5, Minton 5, Griffin 4, Holmes 3, Thomas 3, Palmer 2, Spenser 2.

Broughton JV Boys Top Cary Academy in Athens Tourney

The Caps came out strong in 1st qtr, with a swarming defense and controlling the boards in opening game v. Cary Academy. Luke Sasser corraled 4 rebs and Brooks Palmer added two 3 pointers during the quarter which ended with the Caps in control 30-11.

Jaishon Spenser, Yoel Griffin and Vonshae Lewis kept the pedal to the metal in the 2nd quarter with a virtual endless stream of fast break buckets. At the half the Caps lead was 50-24.

Little changed after intermission. Coach White substituted liberally, and the Caps' depth and talent was too much for the Chargers. Unselfish play, pinpoint passing and a defense that forced over 30 turnovers left only the final score in doubt.

The final: Caps 75 Chargers 39.

Scoring: Lewis 16, Spenser 12, Griffin 10, Palmer 8, Thomas 7, Mohamed 6, Holmes 6, Minton 5, Johnson 4, Robinson 2

Varsity Team defeat Gibbons

In the first half the Varsity Ballers got some really good looks at the basket, but overall play in the first seemed disjointed. In spite of a number of turnovers and blown lay-ups, the Caps, were only down 23 to 24 at the half.
James Hemphill produced the first basket in the second half; Devonte Graham delivered a 3-pointer to tie the score at 30; Chase Johnson checked in and connected with an immediate basket in transition which increased the Caps lead 36 to 32.......the Caps maintained the lead finishing with 60 points to Gibbons 47.

Next Game: Wednesday night at 7 in Holliday Gym as the team meets Athens Drive.

JV Boys Basketball

The Jayvee Boys Basketball team beat Cardinal Gibbons for the second time this year! Sophomore Vonshae Lewis led the way with 8 points and every other team member scored as Broughton won by a score of 51-29.

Both teams got off to a slow start. Broughton trailed by 2 at the end of the first quarter when the score was Broughton 7, Gibbons 9.

Broughton took over from there outscoring the visitors 17-5 in the second quarter, and pulled out to a 24-14 half time lead.

The Caps continued to play well in the second half and the game was never close from that point on. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 40-22, and the final score was 51-29.

Broughton's record is now 5-2. The team will play again in the Athens Drive Holiday Tournament on December 27, 28 and 29.

Varsity Lady Caps Basketball Last Week!!

Varsity Women had three tough games last week.
On Monday, the women played Leesville High School at Leesville and won 55 t0 34.

On Tuesday, they had a tough game against Cary and were ahead most of the game, but lost at the end to a tough Cary team. The final score was Cary 45 and Broughton 41.

They had another game on Friday night against Wake Forest Rolesville. Lady Caps won by 17 points.

Come watch the Lady Caps play next week at Cardinal Gibbons on Monday, December 19 at 7:30 pm and at home on Wednesday December 21 at 5:30 against Athens Drive.

Cougars take the win

The Varsity team started the first quarter a bit sluggish Friday night, but managed to keep the game close with only a 3 point deficit at the end of the first quarter (18 to 15 Cougars).
The Caps managed to claim a 5 point lead at the end of the 2nd half, through good defensive play. The score was 34 to 29 Caps.
This was not a comfortable lead, but we were hopeful.
Unfortunately, the 2nd half was all Cougar......Caps lost 62 to 66.

Next Game: Monday at 7:00 pm. Caps will play Gibbons, for the second time this season, at home.

JV Boys Basketball

Rally Falls Short at Wake Forest-Rolesville!

The JV Boys Basketball team travelled to Wake Forest on Thursday night to play the Wake Forest-Rolesville Cougars.

The Caps put themselves in a big hole as Wake Forest pulled out to a 24-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Broughton's defense improved and the offense was more effective in the second quarter as the Caps fought back to trail by 11 at halftime 36-25.

Broughton's defense strengthened even more in the 3rd quarter allowing the Cougars just 4 points, and we were down by just three as the teams began the fourth quarter with the Cougars leading 40 - 37.

But the Caps could not close that gap and the game ended with a score of Wake Forest 57 - Broughton 52.

Nine players scored for Broughton with Vonshae Lewis leading the away with 11 points, and Kyle Johnston and Jaishon Spencer with 8 points each.

Broughton's record now stands at 4-2 with the next game scheduled at home on Monday the 19th, against Gibbons.

Varsity Men's Basketball Victorious over the Pride

It was a game riddled with turnovers and failed free throws - BUT - the Caps were able to pull out the WIN against Leesville.
In the 2nd quarter Leesville made a run for the lead, but Jamie Rucker gave us a show with 2 perfect 3 pointers and brought the Caps to a 7 point lead (28 -21).
At the end of the 3rd the Pride scored a 3-pointer at the buzzer! This gave them a glimmer of hope since the Broughton lead 'was only' 10.......
The 4th quarter was pretty intense with each team making errors, but it would be the Caps who would be victorious through good defensive play. Varsity walked away with a 10 point victory over Leesville Road HS. Final 64 to 54

Caps travel to Cary High tonight at 7:00.

Varsity Women's Basketball Team Plays Hard and Scares Millbrook in a Tough Game

Broughton Varsity Girls played a tough game tonight against Millbrook. It was Broughton 29 Millbrook 30 at halftime. The girls played great defense and eventually were able to cause Briana Day (UNC Recruit) and another starter for Millbrook to foul out because we drove to the basket. In the third quarter, with 27.4 seconds to go, the score was Broughton 41 Millbrook 42.
The Lady Caps led by Justice Byrd, Adrienne Simmons, sisters Kaila and Nadine Ealey and guard Megan Sullivan matched Millbrook head to head. Kimberly Spruill and Jamella Foster also contributed with strong play. The Lady Caps pushed the Millbrook girls and created a turnover with a technical called on their team. Then Millbrook changed their strategy and played a zone defense which caused some turnovers for Broughton.
The final score was Broughton 53 Millbrook 62. This does not reflect how great our girls played and how hard they fought to win this game. All of the other girls on the team showed great support: Catherine Becton, Emily Newton, Maddie Massarelli, Ellis Wall, Laura Robertson (injured) and Nicole Bellamy (injured). Coach Dayna Jordan coached a great game. Congratulations Lady Caps!!!

JV Boys BB lose 47-38

Caps JV Boys Basketball Team suffers its first loss Thursday night at Millbrook. The first half was played at a frenetic pace with the Caps struggling to hang on to the ball against the quick and aggressive Wildcats. But at halftime, our boys were still competing well, only down by 4 points. In the 3rd quarter, the pace slowed down, and so did the scoring, with Millbrook only scoring 6 points and Broughton scoring 5 points. Broughton began the 4 quarter down by 5 points, but couldn't close the gap, with the final score Millbrook 47 and Broughton 38. Alphonse Holmes scored 8 points for Broughton.

Swimmers and Divers Impress

The Men's and Women's swim teams both had a great night against Cary, Middle Creek and Heritage. The results for the women were: Cary 186
BHS 129
Middle Creek 115
Heritage 80

BHS 152
Heritage 106
Middle Creek 55

Kelsey Moore, Elisabeth Holmes, Alex Haugh, Will Close, Brandon Hodnett, Petch Lamson, and Bancks Holmes all qualified for the State Regionals.
We had many great swims. Some of them were that Elisabeth Holmes dropped about 13 seconds from last year in the 500 free, Will Close dropped 10 seconds in the 200 free and around 7 in the 100 fly. Brandon came down a second in the 50 free and 2 seconds in the fly.
Next week we have Enloe, Middle Creek and Durham Jordan. Last year was the first time in around 18 years that our girls beat Enloe, so they will be gunning for us.
Our divers performed well last night. They each performed 6 dives and all of them hit every dive. That is a big deal for those who have never competed before. They will be back in action again in two weeks.

Basketball: Caps triumph over Durham Spartans

Tuesday night the Men's Varsity Basketball team pulled out a close victory against Southern Durham. The first quarter was filled with steals and lots of fast-breaks, but the score was 15-9 which included a 2 pointer by Chris Corchiani at the buzzer. The second was exciting and the Caps played hard-nose defense, which led to steals and dunks. The Spartans were not easily shaken and managed to tie the Caps at 18.
At halftime the Caps rested on a 3 point lead, 29 to 26. During the 3rd quarter the Caps gained a bit of momentum with Andrew Ocampo muscling his way to a number of defensive boards and the Caps led 51 to 41.
To start the 4th, Chase Johnston gave us a pretty lay-up. The closer was Chris Brickhouse (thanks for the 'birthday' dunk).
Thanks Caps for an exciting 13 point victory, Caps 61 and Spartans 47.

Basketball: A Week of Scrimmage Play

This season our Varsity Team is a mixture of 7 returning players and 6 newcomers, so blending the strengths of each player is very important. Coach Ferrell and his Team have been working really hard for the past week and Tuesday night we got to see our Varsity Team in action.....The Men's Varsity Basketball Team scrimmaged against Panther Creek. This was an away game and definitely provided the Caps with good play. Coach Ferrell took note of the defensive and offensive play of his Team. While there is no scoring in scrimmage play, some would say that it felt like a Caps Victory....

On Thursday the Caps hosted Middle Creek for their final scrimmage game. This was a very competitive opponent. The Caps definitely showed some sharpened defensive play causing a number of fastbreak opportunties for the Team. But one can not forget the last 5 minutes of play watching a very "SWEET ALLEY" by Zach Palmer landing into the "Oh, So Capable" hands of Devonte Graham. I think this was an appetizer of great things to come from a well blended TEAM!

XC: Broughton runners win State Championship

At the two-mile mark, Broughton's Sam Roberson was neck-and-neck with eventual champ Mark Blackmon of West Charlotte. By the time he got to the finish line, a fatigued Roberson appeared to be just barely keeping himself going.

At some point between those two points, Broughton coach David Christian noticed Roberson wasn't feeling well. He shouted out a message to the rest of Roberson's teammates: "Your teammate needs help!"

The rest of the Capitals pushed toward the front, where Roberson was close to passing out before finishing.

"The guys just swarmed to him. It was less about getting across the finish line and more about getting to Sam," Christian said.

The team's efforts were rewarded with its first title since 2008.

Golf: Caps compete in East Regionals

The East Regional Championship was at Duke University Golf Course Tuesday, October 24.   Broughton's team at the East Regionals is Katie Brown, Rachel Lea,  McKenzie Fulford, Lily Kate Tollison, and Ellen Shook.  Of the 23 schools represented in the East, the Caps were one of only seven schools who qualified five players.

McKenzie Fulford qualified for the State Finals.
Rather than 9 holes, like all matches during the regular season, the regional tournaments are 18 hole events.  The Lady Caps played well and were led by senior McKenzie Fulford's 94, Rachel Lea's 96 and Katie Brown's 98.  Lily Kate Tollison finished with a 109 and Ellen Shook had a 115.  All are respectable scores on a very challenging golf course.

The Caps finished the day tied for fifth.  McKenzie Fulford was the only Cap to advance to the State Finals which are in Pinehurst on October 31and November 1.

Women's Tennis: Streak in Individuals Tournament Ends

In the 4A Women's Tennis Individuals, Sarah King lost in the final round in a three-set match to Hoggard's McKayla Zupan. Sarah played exceptionally well, and the match showcased the talent of the top players in the state.

Kelsey Boole and Asha Iyengar lost their semi-final match to Grimsley's twin towers, Clare Cox and Roxanne Henshall. Their score was 6-3, 6-2.

Katie and Maggie Kane won their semifinal match against West Forsyth 6-0, 6-1, then went on to meet Grimsley's team in the finals. The Kanes lost a hard fought match 7-6, 6-4.

Coach Laura Davidson says, "No other team was as well represented in the individuals as Broughton, and I am very proud of the girls for their efforts today. They gave it their best. Also, we send our congratulations to Grimsley because their doubles team played as aggressively and as well as any team we have faced all year. The Grimsley coach and their parents were very complimentary of our girls.

"The individuals are now over, and we are going to turn our full attention to our goal of winning a dual team state championship. There are some very tough teams remaining, and we face Green Hope on Monday. We will be ready to take one match at a time in our march to the championship next Saturday."

Here we go, Caps!

Sarah King advanced to the semi-finals in singles, Katie and Maggie Kane advanced to the semi-finals in doubles, and Kelsey Boole and Asha Iyengar advanced in doubles after a tough 3-set match against the #1 doubles team from Myers Park.

The 2 Broughton doubles teams are on opposite sides of the draw, so we are hoping for an all-Broughton final! The semi-finals will be played on Saturday, October 29th at 10:00 am at the NC State tennis complex. Go Caps!

Golf: Caps Wrap-up a Great Conference Season

The Caps match at Wakefield's TPC course on October 11 was not a great outing for the Lady Caps.  Our team did not love the wet conditions that afternoon and finished sixth overall, our lowest finish of the year.

The Caps were led by Rachel Lea's 47.  Ellen Shook and Katie Brown finished with 53's, while Lily Kate Tollison shot a 55 and Caroline Zevenhuizen shot a 56.  The medalist for the day was Heritage High's Kendra Dalton, who shot a 38.

The last conference match of the season was three days later at Hedingham and the Caps were ready to play.  Rachel Lee again led the Caps with a season best 41.  Lily Kate Tollison shot a 43, her best score of the season and Caroline Zevenhuizen tied her season best 50.  Also playing for the Caps were Nikki Wrenn and Charlotte Barbour.  The Caps finished third behind Wakefield and Heritage.  The medalist for the match was Leesville's Alli Mossinghoff with a season best 36.

For the season, the Caps finished 4th overall, behind Wakefield, Heritage and Sanderson.  Next the ladies travel to Duke on October 24 for the East Regional match.  Qualifying for the East Regionals are Katie Brown, Rachel Lea,  McKenzie Fulford, Lily Kate Tollison, Ellen Shook and Caroline Zevenhuizen.  Unfortunately for Caroline, each team can only play five golfers, so she will have to wait until next year.  Rollins Wallace narrowly missed qualifying for regionals.

Katie and Rachel earned All-Conference Honors.
Congratulations to both Katie Brown and Rachel Lea who earned All-Conference honors.  Katie's season average was 43.4 and Rachel's was 46.33.

Although young, this team is very deep and talented.  Five of the six regional qualifiers will be back next year, so Coach Smith is expecting to have even more fun next year.

Congratulations to our top six players for their excellent play at the Mid-Eastern Regionals this past weekend!

Asha Iyengar and Kelsey Boole played fantastic tennis and beat East Chapel Hill's number 1 doubles team in a tough three set match on Saturday. It was only the seventh time that Kelsey and Asha had played together, and they certainly pulled together to communicate and win. Kelsey and Asha moved onto the finals where they lost to the defending 4A Doubles Champions, Katie and Maggie Kane. The Kanes are once again proving to be the team to beat, and they played rock-solid tennis, including a tough first-round match against another East Chapel Hill doubles team.

In singles, a special congratulations to senior Sarah King for overcoming number one seed Megan Smith, then Audrey Channel, to claim the Regional singles crown. Sarah played some of her best tennis of the year. Kara Summerford missed qualifying for the States by one round, but played well despite a knee injury. Sarah, Katie, Maggie, Asha, and Kelsey will go on to compete in the State Individual Finals at Millbrook Exchange Park this weekend.

Tomorrow, the Caps take on East Chapel Hill in the 2nd round of dual team playoffs. Go Caps!

The Caps had a great win today over New Hanover in the first round of the 4-A dual team playoffs. Normally 6 singles courts and 3 doubles courts play to see who wins 5 out of the 9 matches. Since Broughton took all 6 singles courts, the coaches decided not to play doubles.

The Caps move on to the 2nd round of dual team playoffs on Tuesday, October 25th, at East Chapel Hill. Here we go, Caps!

Women's Tennis: Top 6 Players Advance in Individual Playoffs

For the Cap 8 "Individuals" Conference Tournament, Broughton was well represented with our top six players advancing to Regionals.

Congratulations to #1 seeded doubles team Katie Kane and Maggie Kane, the Cap 8 doubles champions! The Kanes beat the #2 seeded doubles team Kelsey Boole and Asha Iyengar (also a Broughton team!) in the finals.

#5 seeded freshman Kara Summerford lost in the singles semi-final round to the #1 seed from Millbrook, Lauren McCorquodale. It was a hard fought match that went to three close sets: 6-4, 6-7, 4-6.

After winning the first set, #2 Seeded player Sarah King was forced to retire in the final match against Lauren McCorquodale, due to a painful leg cramp. Thankfully, she has recovered and is looking forward to getting back out on the court next week!

Great playing from all of our top 6, as they move on to compete regionally. "Dual team" playoffs begin next week, where Broughton will compete as a team on 6 singles courts and 3 doubles courts in an effort to retain our state championship title. Our first team match will be Tuesday, October 18. Here we go, Caps!
