The Girl’s Varsity Lacrosse played its first game of the season last Monday night, 2/28, away at Cary. While leading 7 v 5 at halftime, the game was suspended due to inclement weather. According to the NCSHAA, if a sanctioned game is suspended in the first half, then it is replayed on a different day, and the game picks up from the point of interruption. However, if a game is suspended at halftime or in the second half, then the game is considered complete. Of particular note, this is different than the US Lacrosse rulebook which caused some confusion that took the better part of a week to resolve with the organizing officials.
Net/Net: Record an opening day win for our new coaches, Patricia Alexander and Jen Duncan, and the Lady CapsLax team. The game was well played for an season opener for this relatively young Broughton team. Both teams were evenly matched. Alex Yankoglu was effective at draw controls. Broughton controlled and moved the ball well on the offensive end of the field. The defense was solid in settled situations and made key stops when needed most. One area of improvement is transition toward defense and unsettled situations. With a young midfield the transition game has room for improvement, but they have the right personal to sharpen this area. It promises to be an area of strength in future games with their overall team speed. On offense, Broughton jumped out to an early 3 – 0 lead before yielding the first goal. Team scoring was lead by freshman Kelsey Dupere (4 goals), senior captain Paulina Escobar (2 goals), and senior Sarah Stidham (1 goal).
