Lady CapsLax Lose to Athens on Effective Crease Play
The young Lady CapsLax experienced effective crease play around the goal by a senior-dominated Athens Drive team losing, 5 vs. 16, on Friday night away. This was the first time all season that the Lady CapsLax faced an experienced opponent that ran established sets from behind the goal, using cuts, slides, and dodges to create one-on-one isolation. Opponents in our previous games usually plowed directly toward the cage in open field transition, taking advantage of unsettled scoring situations. Facing an experienced team that runs set isolation plays was another important lesson for our young team as they continue to learn nuances of the game. The LadyLax transition game was effective and we held position well, particularly in the midfield. Scoring was lead by freshman Kelsey Dupere with three goals, followed by junior Alex Yankoglu and senior co-captain Paulina Escobar with one goal each. Of particular note, we saw the LadyLax run their own offensive sets for the first time all season which resulted in two of our goals. While the Lady CapsLax definitely had many scoring chances, they ran into a goalie which had a career night stopping at least eleven of more than the sixteen shots on goal she faced.
