Caps Softball Wins Longest Game in School History

The Lady Caps Varsity softball team played the longest game ever in Broughton history, edging Wakefield High School by a score of 10 to 9 in 14 innings. Three seniors, captain Gina Guzzo, left fielder Apryl Olko, and outfielder Lela Rucker, were honored on the field before the beginning of the game for their dedication to Broughton softball.

In the first two innings, Wakefield jumped out to a 5 to 1 lead and kept the lead until the bottom of the 7th inning. The Lady Caps came up with a run in the bottom of the 7th to take the game into extra innings. The score remained tied until the top of the 12th when the Wolverines went ahead with 3 runs on some very nice hitting. But the Lady Caps did not give up and came up with 3 runs of their own after two outs in the bottom of the 12th.
The Woverines had several opportunities to win the game in extra innings but outfielders Apryl Olko, Katie Munger, and Valerie Guzzo had some outstanding plays to hold the Wolverines scoreless through the top of the 14th.
In the bottom of the 14th, with 2 outs, sophomore Morgan Buonpane had an infield single. She stole second on a passed ball by the catcher. Valerie Guzzo then drilled a single up the middle and Coach Stephens waved Buonpane home for the winning run. Bounpane dove head first into home, the ump yelled safe, and the entire team all headed to home plate to celebrate.

All of the Lady Caps infielders made outstanding plays during the game....Nicole Bellamy at third, Garett Hedgepeth at short stop, Morgan Buonpane at second, and Kristi Parker at first. Incredibly, Junior winning pitcher Sarah Dodson pitched the entire 14 innings for the Capitals and remained strong until the final inning. Catcher Gina Guzzo made several outstanding plays at home, blocking the plate and tagging out runners in several innings.

This win secured a third place finish in the Cap 8 conference. The Caps will take on visiting Enloe tomorrow, Monday, May 9th at Pullen Field. Game time is 4 PM. Should the Caps win on Monday, they will head to Leesville to play in the Semi-finals. The finals will be held at Leesville High School on Thursday, May 12th.
