Lady CapsLax Season Re-cap

This was a transition year for the Lady CapsLax program. At the beginning of the school year, the program’s long-time coaches announced that they would not be returning for the 2011 season. After a quick but thorough search, we were able to hire two new coaches, Patricia Alexander as the head coach, and Jen Duncan as the assistant coach. Patricia is a former All American, and US National Development Team member, who played and coached collegiately at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD. Jen is a local talent, and CT transplant; she played, managed, and coached at the women’s club lacrosse program at NC State University. Both are passionate and committed to building a premier girl’s lacrosse program at Broughton. They quickly got started with two fall ball tournaments, followed by pre-season skill sessions and a rigorous conditioning program. They brought a fresh perspective to the Lady CapsLax program, instilling a new culture with respect to the commitment required by each and every player towards building a top notch program with high expectations.

Last year’s program saw the graduation of many players, including the reigning NC Player of the Year. In addition, several experienced players chose not to return for the 2011 season, or suffered season-ending injuries. This left a very young Lady CapsLax team with very few juniors and seniors. This is one sport where experience does make a tremendous difference at this age and skill level. Our starting line-up was dominated by sophomores and freshman. Despite all of these changes and the apparent youth of this team, our Lady CapsLax team ended the season with 6 wins & 8 losses, narrowly missing the state playoffs in the final game of the season. More importantly, with a new mindset now established our girls progressed in their individual skills, confidence, and teamwork. The current players have now bought into the new coaches and their system with personal commitment towards off season skill improvement and development. The bar has been raised. With the influence of new, experienced young players, the Lady CapsLax program is truly one of the area’s girl’s lacrosse programs on the rise.
