Izzy Hernandez, one of the most successful high school soccer coaches in the state, will not be coaching the Broughton High boys team this fall, but he is expected to remain as the girls soccer coach.
Jack Spain, the Broughton athletic director, said Hernandez was scaling back his coaching duties. "Izzy is an unbelievable high school coach," Spain said. "He is the epitome of what you want in a coach. He has done a fantastic job for us for many years. I am really disappointed for the boys who won't have the opportunity to play for him, but I am very pleased that he is staying on as the girls coach and as a teacher."
Hernandez has coached the Caps since 1989. His boys teams have won two N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A state championships, including one in 2007 when Broughton was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings. His girls have won nine NCHSAA 4-A titles.
Robbie Moore, the Broughton baseball coach for the past two years, and Tim Meserth, the Caps' volleyball coach, also have stepped down.
