Varsity Lady Caps Have Tough Loss in WRAL 101.5 Championship Game of Holiday OT Tournament

The Lady Caps faced the High School  OT.Com Holiday Invitational Tournament returning Champions Myers Park High School from Charlotte, NC on Saturday December 29, 2012 at Broughton High School.  The Caps fought back and got within three in the fourth quarter but ended up losing 56 to 48.  Justice Byrd, Senior, was hit hard and hurt in the second quarter and was out the rest of the game. Kaila Ealey, Sophomore, was the only Lady Caps in double digits to score 19 points and won The Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. Justice Byrd was selected for the All Tournament Team.

Despite the loss, Broughton set a new tournament record for scoring, surpassing Orange's 1996 record with 196 total points in three games. The Lady Caps downed Holly Springs 62-60 Wednesday and beat Hillside 86-65 Thursday before falling in the title game.

The Lady Caps take on Wake Forest Rolesville at Wake Forest Rolesville on Friday, January 4, 2012 at 5:30 pm.  We look forward to a strong, winning season, and continue to strive to take home the Conference Champions' Title.

Lady Caps Beat Hillside 87-65 in SemiFinals of Holiday OT Tournament

The Lady Caps came out strong and never looked back. They beat Hillside 87-65 today after a physical game.  They will face Myers Park, who won in overtime, on Saturday December 29, 2012at 5:40 pm at Broughton for the Championship Game. Please come cheer for the Lady Caps.  Let's help them bring home the trophy from the Holiday OT Tournament. The last time Broughton Lady Caps won was 2010. 

Kailey Ealey led the scoring with 28 point. Megan Sullivan with 16 points and  Justice Byrd with 15 points also led the Caps in scoring.

Varsity Lady Caps Beat Holly Springs in Last Second Shot 62-60

Justice Byrd hit an amazing shot to win the game for the Lady Caps in the Holiday OT Invitational at Cary Academy today. The Lady Caps beat Holly Springs 62-60.  Please come support the Lady Caps tomorrow as they play Hillside at 1:30 pm at Cary Academy.

The Varsity Boys Basketball team had two tough conference games in the past week. The Caps fell to Millbrook 51-50 last Friday night but rebounded with a 59-40 win at home over Leesville bring the record to 8-1.  The next game will take place at home in the Holiday OT tournament on Wednesday, December 26th at 4:00 PM. We play a very strong Person County team featuring UNC Greensboro recruit Tyrone Outlaw.

Varsity Lady Caps Win Tuesday, December 18 Over Leesville by 24 points

Varsity Lady Caps come back from their loss to Millbrook last week to beat Leesville 53 to 29 on Tuesday.
Points:  Catherine Becton-2, Chelsey Floyd-2, Justice Byrd-2, Jamella Foster-4, Kimberly Spruill-5, Kaila Ealey-8, Nicole Bellamy-12 and Megan Sullivan was high scorer with 18 points.

The girls have the rest of the week off from games which gives them time to prepare for the High School OT.com Holiday Tournament December 26 through 29, 2012 at Cary Academy.  Please come support the Lady Caps on Wednesday, December 26 as they go against Holly Springs High School at 3:30 pm.

JV Lady Caps Dominate the Leesville Pride! 55-18

The JV Girls Basketball team dominated the gym floor of Leesville High School tonight with a 55-18 win.  In their final game before the holiday break, the Lady Caps successfully blocked a number of shots by Leesville. The girls pushed the ball ahead looking for and making many of their open shots.  And of course, their defense did not let up.

Varsity Lady Caps take tough loss to Millbrook 56-40 Friday night

The Varsity Lady Caps had their first loss of the season to Millbrook Friday night. This was the first conference game.  The Lady Caps were within 3 points at halftime but ended up with a loss by 16.  The Lady Caps had several missed layups and other turnovers that contributed to the loss.  We continue to try and work well together as a team and anticipate a win on Tuesday. Also, we are playing in the High School OT at Cary Academy and look forward to wins in that tournament.

JV Girls Keep Their Winning Streak Alive, Defeating Millbrook 54-40!

JV Lady Caps used their aggressive defense again tonight to defeat the rival Millbrook Wildcats 54-40. Team Captain, Addie Yancey, led the ladies in scoring, but the girls continue to be unselfish with the ball.  Points for the evening:  Addie Yancey-10; Jessica Johnson-9; Josie Rouse-7; Katie Wadsworth-7; Brittney Smith-6; Emma Willard-6; Lizzie Mann-4; Amelia Rustin-3; Eliza Taylor-2.  The Caps crowd was great.  Thank you for coming out and showing your support!!  The last game before the Christmas Break starts at 5:30 pm. on Monday, December 17th, at Leesville High School.  The JV Lady Caps hope to see you there.
The Varsity Boys basketball team defeated Cary High School Wednesday night by a score of 78-43. The Caps travel to Millbrook Friday night at 7:00 for a conference showdown.

Varsity Lady Caps dominate Cary Imps tonight! 82 to 34


The Varsity Lady Caps played a great game tonight to beat Cary. All ladies played tonight. It is a great start to a week of tough basketball. Jamella Foster was lead scorer tonight with 17 points. The Lady Caps play undefeated Millbrook on Friday December 14 at Millbrook at 5:30. Both teams are undefeated. Please come support our Lady Caps Friday night.

Caps Earn Under Armour's "Finding Undeniable" Finals

After competing against 750 schools across the country, Broughton High School is in the Under Armour "Finding Undeniable" Finals! 

We have to create a 1 minute video and tell why we think we are Undeniable and deserve to win. Once the video is submitted on Monday, December 17, we will need EVERYONE to vote EVERY DAY. So be on the lookout for instructions and PLEASE send it to EVERYONE you know. We are Broughton Strong and Undeniable!

Swimmers Dominate

This evening, for the first time in many years, both the women's and men's swim teams swept all their opponents in the same meet.
The women's scores were BHS 177  Durham Jordan 157  Wakefield 131  Fuquay-Varina 42
The men's scores were BHS 187  Durham Jordan 181  Wakefield  89  Fuquay-Varina 57

The men's meet came down to the last event, the 400 free relay.  All of the men swam great, but Brandon Hodnett wowed the crowd with an amazing 49.92 split.  We won that relay and our B relay took 5th which gave us enough points to secure our 6 point lead and the victory.

The women were led by Kelsey Moore who took first place in both the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke in regional consideration times, Elisabeth Holmes who took first in both the 200 freestyle and the 500 free, and Rachel Shaw who won the 100 freestyle.  Great swims were had by Heather Johnson who took 4 seconds off her 200 freestyle time, Addie Folk who took 2.5 seconds off her 50 free time, and Ann Marie Stonehouse who took 3.5 seconds off her breaststroke time.

The men were led by Brandon Hodnett who took first in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, Will Close who took first in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Bancks Holmes who took first in both the Individual Medley and the 500 freestyle.  Great swims were had by Nick Chomette, who cut 3 seconds off his 200 freestyle time, Romeo Schneider who cut 2.5 seconds off his 100 freestyle time and 1.5 seconds off his 50 freestyle time, and Wynn Plaga who cut 3 seconds off his 100 freestyle time.

Caps Basketball Wins!

The Boys Varsity basketball team had a successful week with two non conference wins. The team defeated Apex on Wednesday 67-58 and Cardinal Gibbons 64-41 on Friday night. The boys are back on the court Wednesday night with a home game against Cary.

JV Lady Caps Win Again, 53-33!

Friday, December 7th,  the JV Girls Basketball team continued their aggressive defense as they moved past the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders to a 53-33 victory.  Leading the team in scoring was team captain, Addie Yancey, who had 13 points.  Other points contributors included Brittney Smith-12, Katie Wadsworth-10, Jessica Johnston-8, Eliza Taylor-8 and Emma Willard-2.  Way to go Lady Caps and Coach Willard.  Keep up the good work!!  Please come out and cheer on the JV Girls as they take on the Millbrook Wildcats Thursday, December 13th at 5:30 in the Holliday Gym.


Lady Caps Varsity Basketball Stay on Winning Streak This Past Week

Varsity Lady Caps started out the week beating Apex 63-55 on Wednesday night.  Last night, Friday, December 7, 2012 at the Father Thomas F. Price Classic Broughton Lady Caps took on the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders.  Broughton defeated Cardinal Gibbons 64 to 46.  Please join us on Wednesday December 12, 2012 as the Lady Caps play against Cary at Broughton in the Cary Endowment Game at 5:30 pm and Friday December 14, 2012 as the Lady Caps take on Millbrook at Millbrook at 5:30 pm.

JV Lady Caps Roll Past Apex

The JV Lady Caps won their second game of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Apex High 48-28.  The Broughton girls showed great skill with their trapping and fast paced plays.  Katie Wadsworth led the team in scoring with 17.  Other scorers with a half dozen or more points were Josie Rouse-7, Addie Yancey-6, and Brittney Smith-6.  Be sure to come out tomorrow, December 7th,  at 5:30 to support the JV Lady Caps as they host Gibbons at 5:30pm!

Caps in Final 4 of Under Armour Competition

Varsity Boys Basketball Team had a successful weekend against two Wilmington Schools. Broughton defeated defending 4A champion New Hanover by a score of 71-47 on Friday night then went on the road to Wilmington Hoggard and came away with a tough 54-48 win. The wins run the record to 4-0. The boys play Apex at home Wednesday night at 7:00 PM.

Sand Volleyball Interest Meeting

We are having an interest meeting for Men's and Women's Sand Volleyball! Broughton is starting a Sand Volleyball Club and we are very excited to provide another outlet for young volleyball players to practice and compete! The meeting will be held on Thursday, December 13th at 2:25 in Coach Daniels's room 1313. Please spread the word to anyone that would be interested to attend the meeting on Thursday. Additional information about the club will be provided at the meeting.

Dive meet 11-30-12

Broughton Divers competed Friday night at NCSU.  The men were led by Will Sally who totaled 127.10 points and John Rogers with 103.10 points.  The women were represented by Charlotte Lowe, who scored 91.20 points.  All 6 of our divers performed very well, with only one missed dive among the 36 attempted.  Considering over half our divers are new to high school diving, their performance was incredible.  The next meet will be December 14 at NCSU.  

Swim Meet 11-29-12

The men's and women's swim teams competed against Cary, Heritage, and Smithfield-Selma on Thursday.  For the women, the scores were: Cary 197,  BHS 147,  Heritage 119, SSS 29.
For the men, the scores were: Cary 165,  Heritage 159, BHS 145, SSS 13.
We had some great swims, with Kelsey Moore, Elisabeth Holmes, Will Close, and Brandon Hodnett all qualifying for regionals in 2 events.  Our next meet is Thursday December 6 at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.  We will be competing against Middle Creek, Enloe, and Cardinal Gibbons.

Varsity Lady Caps Basketball Win against Hoggard High School 59 to 32

The Lady Caps had a great day in Wilmington today. First, they warmed up by walking to the beach and then they played a great game to beat Hoggard High School by 27 points for a final score of Lady Caps 59 and Hoggard Vikings 32.

The Lady Caps travel to Apex this Wednesday, December 5 to play at 7 pm and Friday December 7 at 5:30 pm they play Cardinal Gibbons at Cardinal Gibbons.

The Lady Caps' record is 2-0 so far this season.

Varsity Lady Caps beat New Hanover 63-36

The Lady Caps Varsity Basketball team travelled to Wilmington NC and defeated the Lady Wildcats at New Hanover High School by 27 points tonight! The Lady Caps play Hoggard High School Saturday at 1 pm. Go Caps!

Congratulations to all Caps' supporters who helped Broughton make it through the first phase of the Under Armour Challenge to win $140,000 worth of uniforms and equipment!  Now we're on to phase 2 - an eight school playoff to win it all!  See this link for details.

JV Women's Basketball Win Home Opener 66-24

On Tuesday, the JV Women's Basketball team defeated Southern Durham 66-24 in the team's first home game.  Freshman point guard, Emma Willard, led the Lady Caps in scoring.  JV Women's Head Coach, Chris Willard, was pleased with both the effort of the team as well as the support of the Broughton fans.


The JV Lady Caps travel to Apex High School Wednesday, December 5, 2012 for a 5:30 pm game.  Make plans now to come out and support the Lady Caps on December 7, 2012  at 5:30 pm when they host Cardinal Gibbons at home.

Varsity Women's Basketball Defeat Southern Durham 78-46

Women's Tennis State Champs!

Congratulations to the Women's Tennis Team for winning the state championship on Saturday!

This is the eleventh state title that the Caps have won. And we have played in 17 of the last 18 state championships.

It was a sweet victory against #2 ranked Grimsley, who beat Broughton in the state championship last year in a surprising upset.

The Caps won 5-1, with senior Ashley Ramsay winning the closing match at the #6 singles court. Ashley fought back from a first set deficit to win in a tiebreaker.

Maggie Kane, Adrienne Overcash, Olivia King, and Kara Summerford finished the season undefeated in singles.

Led by Coach Laura Davidson and Coach Frank, the team completed a perfect season at 24-0. Here we go, Caps!

Broughton's Under Armour Contest Details

You may have seen or heard about the Under Armour's "Finding Undeniable" Program.

  2. The winner of the contest gets $142,000 worth of uniforms and equipment.
  3. The first round of competition will end on November 20th, at 3:00pm EST.
Here’s how the contest works – Broughton earns points by completing challenges and gaining Supporters. Points are awarded for Supporters.  So spreading the word across the school, across the community, with alumni, parents and friends is crucial to success.

Caps Women's Tennis Advance to State Finals!

Congratulations to our Lady Caps who beat Green Hope 5-1 in the semi-finals today to advance to the state finals in Burlington on Saturday.

Every match was hotly contested but doubles wasn't necessary after Kara Summerford closed out her match after fighting through a tough first set.

Come out to support our Caps on Saturday at 9:30 am at the Burlington Tennis Center. The Caps want to avenge their tough loss last year and bring home the title this time. It is sure to be a thriller!

Women's Tennis: Broughton Advances to Semi-Finals after Defeating Panther Creek


Many, many thanks to the amazing crowd that showed up to support the Caps this afternoon in our quarterfinal match against Panther Creek!

We were amazed at the students, parents, and faculty (including Mr. Mares) that drove out to Panther Creek, braving the cold wind to cheer us on to victory!

The Caps won five singles courts, which clinched the team win, so there was no need to play doubles.

Broughton will play the semi-final match against Green Hope AT HOME tomorrow at 4:00. Please come out and support the team- it really does make a difference!

Women's Tennis: BHS is the Proud Home of the 4A Individuals Singles Champion and Doubles Finalists

The women's tennis team had an awesome finish to the Individuals State Championship this weekend!

Singles
On Friday, junior Maggie Kane advanced to the finals after beating Meredith Smith from Watauga 6-0, 6-0 and then going on to beat Hannah Templeton from Greensboro Page in the second round 0-6, 6-4, 10-7. Maggie had an amazing comeback in the 3rd set tiebreaker after being down 3-7.

In the finals on Saturday, Maggie defeated Chloe Willets from Winston-Salem RJ Reynolds 7-5, 6-2 to become the 4A state singles champion!

Doubles
Olivia King and Kelsey Boole won two rounds of doubles on Friday and then lost in the semi-finals to the Mid-East Regional champs from Panther Creek, Sammy Smith and Jordan Strickland, 2-6, 2-6.

Adrienne Overcash and Kara Summerford advanced to the doubles finals after beating Lauren MCorquodale and Savannah Taranto from Millbrook 6-3, 6-3.

Adrienne and Kara lost in the finals against Panther Creek's Sammy Smith and Jordan Strickland 0-6, 2-6.

It was a great weekend for the Caps!

The next dual team playoff match will be at Panther Creek on Monday, October 29th at 4:00. Please come out and support our team!

Alumnus: Corporal Hicks Honored Before Friday's Game

Prior to the Broughton High football game this Friday night, the life of Corporal Darrion Hicks will be celebrated.  Corporal Hicks, a 2009 Broughton graduate,  was killed July 19 in Ghazni, Afghanistan.  

The ceremony will be held on the football field and will begin promptly at 6:40pm.  All veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are encouraged to assemble on the field by 6:15pm.  They will join the Broughton JROTC and the NC National Guard's honor guard in presenting the flag to the family.  Active duty military are asked to come in uniform.

Women's Tennis: BHS Defeats New Hanover in 2nd Round of Team Playoffs

The Lady Caps defeated New Hanover 6-0 in the second round of Dual Team Playoffs on Tuesday.

New Hanover opted not to play doubles after the Caps took all of the singles courts.

Broughton will advance to the third round, where we will face top-ranked Panther Creek on their courts on Monday, October 29.
