JV Boys Basketball

Broughton JV Boys get their 12th Win Tonight

Broughton travelled to Enloe on Monday night for the second game of the year with the Eagles. In a fast paced game Broughton stayed with Enloe throughout the first half and trailed by 2 points at half time, 33 - 31. After a low scoring third quarter, Broughton still trailed by 2 points, 43 - 41. Broughton fought hard and tied the score at 53. Enloe was fouled with 32 seconds to go and made 1 of 2 free throws to take the lead, 54 - 53. After a timeout, Broughton inbounded the ball with 12 seconds to go, and Vonshae Lewis made a driving layup with 2 seconds remaining on the clock, to give Broughton a 1 pt lead at 55-54. Enloe missed a last second shot, ending the game with a Broughton victory.


Broughton's record is now 12 wins, 6 losses.

Our JV Boys will be playing this Wednesday at Broughton at 7:00pm!

JV Lady Caps Beat Wake Forest Rolesville

The JV Lady Caps played hard and came out on top against Wake Forest Rolesville at Broughton on Thursday night. They won 44-42. This brings the JV Lady Caps to an 8-8 record.


This is a great win for the Lady Caps. Please continue to support the JV team. They play Enloe at Enloe on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 5:30.

Varsity Men travel to Wake Forest-Rolesville

First quarter hightlights include Chase Johnston with a 3 pointer giving the Caps a 10 to 7 lead. Devonte Graham with the teardrop for 14 to 11.
Second quarter Corchiani steals and feeds Graham for the slamdunk 19 to 21 (Cougars). James Hemphill with a lay up to pull the Caps back on top 23 to 21. James Hemphill takes the last shot at the buzzer for 33 to 26 Caps lead at the half.
Devonte Graham with the opening 3 to start the 3rd qtr. The Caps lead most of the 3rd and headed into the 4th qtr. with a 6 point lead (42 to 36).
Caps defense would be tested in the 4th qtr. The Cougars were relentless and smelled victory...but....the Caps good defensive play took James Hemphill to the line breaking a 48 tie. Bottom of the 4th - Chase Johnston with the feed to Devonte Graham.....the basket and one! 54 seconds left Graham to the line making the score 55 to 49 Caps. Cougars fought hard BUT back to the line Devonte goes.....Caps win 59 to 51.

The Varsity Lady Caps beat Wake Forest Rolesville tonight at Wake Forest Rolesville. The Cougars played a tough game and went ahead a few times, but in the end the Lady Caps came together to win the game.


The final score was Broughton 52 - Wake Forest Rolesville 41

JV Boys - Big Win against WF-R

Broughton travelled to Leesville on Tuesday night, January 24th and lost a close game to the Leesville Pride. Broughton played well in the first half and led by as much as 7 at one point and the score was tied at 35 at halftime. Leesville took an eight point lead early in the second half and led by three as the fourth quarter began. Broughton kept it close throughout the quarter and tied the game at 59 with 48 seconds left and again tied the score at 61 with 16 seconds remaining, but Leesville made a short jumper with 5 seconds to go to win the game 63-61.


Broughton had more fun at home on Thursday, January 26th, as they played Wake Forest-Rolesville for the second time this year. Earlier Wake Forest defeated Broughton, but this time it was a different story.

Broughton jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first quarter, and scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to take a 27-8 lead and ended the half with a 14 point lead 34-20.

The Caps scored the first 10 points of the second half and led 44-24 with 4:00 minutes to go in the third quarter. Wake Forest had a run of their own and scored 11 straight before Jaison Spencer hit a free throw to end the third quarter with Broughton leading 45-33. The Caps maintained a lead of 10 points or more throughout the fourth quarter and won the game by 15; 68-53. It was a great team effort with lots of strong contributions. Eleven team members scored, led by Yoel Griffin with 8, Brooks Palmer with 10, and Jaison Spencer with 11.

The win - loss record is 11 - 6, and our JV Boys plan to finish strong with 4 games remaining.

Come support our JV Boys at Broughton Wed., Feb. 1 at 7:00. They will play at Enloe Mon., Jan. 30th at 5:30.

Swimming and Diving Championships

The swimming and diving teams competed this past weekend in the CAP VIII championships. The women took 6th in the conference and the men took 5th. All those who scored are listed below.
The women were led by Kelsey Moore who took 1st in the 100 free and 2nd in the backstroke. The men were led by Brandon Hodnett who took 4th in the 50 free and 6th in the 100 free.

Nicolas Chomette cut 11 seconds in the 500 free. Johnson Beasley cut 4 seconds in the 200 IM, 1.5 seconds in the 100 free.
Alex Haugh cut 2 seconds in the 100 back. Jack Krueger cut 4 seconds in the 100 breast.

No. 2 Lady Caps Beat No. 1 Millbrook at Millbrook

The Lady Caps beat No. 1 Millbrook tonight 55 to 49. The girls went up against a tough, physical Millbrook team at Millbrook. Kaila Ealey was knocked to the floor by two Millbrook Wildcats and sat out of the game for several minutes, but when she came back in she played hard and scored several points.

Nicole Bellamy, who had been out due to an injury, was back and played several minutes. She went head to head against UNC Recruit No. 50 Briana Day and played tough defense.

Justice Byrd lead the team with 18 points.

Millbrook had been undefeated in the Cap 8 conference until tonight. The Lady Caps worked well together as a team to win the game!! We are so proud of our Lady Caps!!!

JV Boys BB

Brought lost a close game with Millbrook tonight by a score of 55-54.

Millbrook took control of the game early and held a 20-10 lead before Broughton scored four straight points and closed the score to 20 -1 4 at the end of the first quarter.

Broughton trailed at halftime 30-25. The score might have been closer but the Caps missed 7 free throws in the first half.

Broughton played better in the third quarter and tied the score at 40 going in to the last period.
Neither team could take a significant lead until Millbrook scored a free throw to open the lead to five points at 55-50, with 35 seconds to go. Vonshae Spencer hit a 3 point shot with 17 seconds remaining, and Broughton trailed by 2. One more free throw by Vonshae with 7 seconds to go ended the scoring with Millbrook winning 55-54. Leading scorers for the Caps were Yoel Griffin with 10 and Vonshae Spencer with 11.

Tuesday, January 24th at 7:00 at Leesville is the next game for the JV Boys.

Varsity Lady Caps Beat Sanderson 56-49





















































Friday night, January 13, 2012, Broughton had a tough match against Sanderson and played hard to win. The final score was 56-49. This ties Broughton with Wakefield for second place in the Cap 8 conference behind Millbrook. Lady Caps take on Millbrook Friday January 20, 2012 at 5:30 pm at Millbrook.

Broughton is 5-2 in the conference and 13-4 overall. Broughton is now ranked 11 in the News and Observer 's Rankings.

JV Boys BB

The Broughton Boys Jayvee Basketball team won two close conference games this week to improve their record to 10 and 4.

Wakefield - Monday, January 9th

On Monday night the team travelled to Wakefield. Broughton took an early lead and led by six points at the half, and held that same lead after three quarters 41-35.

Wakefield opened the fourth quarter with aggressive play and Broughton trailed by 4 with less than a minute to play. Vonshae Lewis hit a three pointer, to close the gap to one. After a Wakefield turnover, Yousif Mohamed was fouled as he made a driving layup. He made the free-throw giving Broughton a 51-49 lead with less than 12 seconds to go. Wakefield was unable to score and Broughton won 51-49.

Vonshae Lewis was the leading scorer with 20 points!

Sanderson - Friday, January 13th

Broughton hosted Sanderson at Holliday Gymnasium on Friday night. Though Sanderson was a much taller team, Broughton controlled the game through the first half and led by six at halftime 29-23.

Broughton played poorly in the third quarter scoring just six points and trailed by 4 at the end of the third quarter with the score Broughton 35, Sanderson 39.

Sanderson scored the first basket of the fourth quarter and led by seven before Broughton caught fire. With Brooks Palmer leading the way with 9 4th quarter points and Yoel Griffin with six, Broughton scored a total of 23 fourth quarter points to rally and win by two - 58-56.

Broughton's record now shows 10 wins against 4 losses. The Caps record in conference play is 4 and 3. There are seven games remaining. Our next game is at home on Thursday, Jan. 19th, against Millbrook, as we begin play against our conference opponents for the second time. Our JV Boys really appreciate your support.

Men swimmers sweep

This past Tuesday evening the Men's Swim Team beat both Sanderson and Fuquay-Varina with an exciting finish. The men were trailing Sanderson by 13 points going into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. Our "A" and "B" relays took both first and second place, scoring 24 points while Sanderson managed only 8 points in that race, bringing the CAPS to a 3 point victory.

Game on January 9, 2012 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Alabama won the game by a score of 21-0.

SHELLEY’S RECORD NIGHT:  Junior placekicker Jeremy Shelley now ranks fifth in Alabama history in points scored in a season with 115. Shelley scored 15 of the Crimson Tide’s 21 points, with field goals from 23, 34, 35, 41 and a career-long 44 yards. In addition, he is now second for the most points scored in a season by a kicker with 115. Shelley’s 5 field goals set a new BCS National Championship game record as well as a new record for any bowl game.

The Lady Caps played a tough game and came out on top beating Wakefield 56 to 52.

Boys Basketball - JV

The Broughton Jayvee Boys started the new year slowly as they lost the first game of 2012 at home on Tuesday night against Enloe. Broughton started quickly and held the lead through three quarters, but the Eagles tied the score at 43 with 4 minutes to go in the game, and pulled away for a 54-48 victory.

On Thursday night, Jan. 5th, Broughton traveled to Heritage High School in Wake Forest. Despite the fact that Heritage was much taller than the Caps, Broughton jumped out to an early 9-1 lead and led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter. Heritage started the second quarter with an 11-0 run and cut the Broughton lead to 25-21 by half time. Heritage had a strong third quarter and led 35-34 as the fourth quarter began.

With smart play and strong defense, Broughton captured the lead late in the game and held on to win 45-43. Roy McMillan, Will Minton and Brooks Palmer scored the last five points of the game to seal the win for Broughton.

Yoel Griffin scored 11 points to lead the Caps. Will Minton and Vonshae Lewis scored 10 each. Roy McMillan led Broughton in rebounds with 6.

Broughton's record is 8 wins and 4 losses.

We travel to Wakefield Monday night, January 9th, for a 7:00 game.

Divers to compete Friday

Broughton divers will be competing at NC State on Friday January 6. The men will begin at 5:45 and the women at 7:45. Admission is free.

Swimmers lose two

Broughton men's and women's swim teams lost to Leesville and Millbrook this evening.
The lady CAPS were led by Kelsey Moore, who took first in the 500 freestyle and second in the 50 freestyle, and by Elisabeth Holmes, who took first in the backstroke and second in the 200 freestyle. The team of Moore, Holmes, Rachel Shaw, and Adaira Brewer also won the 400 freestyle relay.
The men were led by Brandon Hodnett, who took third place in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.
The team will be in action again on Tuesday when the CAPS go up against Sanderson and Fuquay-Varina.

Lady Caps Come Back Strong Wednesday Night to Beat Athens Drive 81 to 42

Lady Caps came back strong Wednesday night after a tough loss Tuesday night. They beat Athens Drive 81 to 42. All girls played well. At the half Broughton was up 53 to 15. Coach Jordan did a great job rotating all girls for the opportunity to play and show their teamwork. The result was a great win with Broughton 81 and Athens Drive 42.

Lady Caps Have Tough Loss Against Enloe































The Lady Caps came back from the Holiday Break with their first game against Enloe on Tuesday night. The Lady Caps played tough but were down by 2 at the half with the score Enloe 31 Broughton 29. They continued to play tough and were up 44 to 41 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. At the end, the final score was Enloe 56 and Broughton 55. A tough loss to start the week.
