Team schedules available for download

We've added a new page to the blog, Team Schedule, that has most of the spring teams' schedules available for download to your personal digital calendars with the click of a button.  Not only do you no longer need to enter the data on your calendar, but as games are rescheduled, your downloaded version will be updated as well.

If you take advantage of these calendars, please thank the following volunteers responsible for entering the data:  baseball - Karl Zellman, golf - Jennifer Wood, softball - Louis Buonpanetennis - Maggie Pollock, LAX - Matt Massarelli.

We still need help for Women's Soccer and Track & Field.  If you'd like to help us by maintaining the calendar for the blog, please contact us at BroughtonSports@gmail.com.  It is a simple process and we'll help you get it done...takes less than an hour for most teams!

For the over 40 crowd with bad eyes, the Team Schedule link is located on the blog in the upper left corner just under the purple Broughton Sports Update banner.  Sorry the text is so small, I'm still trying to figure out how to grow it.  From left to right, there is a Home page, Team Schedule Page and Team Roster Page.

Go Caps!

Golfer Proves The Importance of Not Quitting

By Fred Bowen, Wednesday, February 08,5:33 PM    Link to Washington Post story

It’s early in the year, but we may already have the comeback story of 2012: pro golfer Kyle Stanley.

Two Sundays ago, Stanley was three shots ahead with just one hole to play in the Farmers Insurance Open. All he had to do was score a 7 or better on the par 5 18th hole. That’s easy for a talented pro like Stanley.
alt-tag
Kyle Stanley hit some amazing shots Sunday at the Phoenix Open, including one from under a cactus bush.

But Stanley knocked his ball into the water and scored an 8. That score is so bad golfers have a special name for it: “a snowman.” Then Stanley missed a short putt to lose in a playoff.

So instead of winning his first PGA tournament, Stanley lost in the worst possible way. Stanley, 24, cried after the tournament because he was so disappointed. Golf fans wondered whether Stanley could come back after such a heartbreaking loss.

Stanley didn’t quit or feel sorry for himself for long. He entered the Phoenix Open last week and played well. Still, he was behind by eight strokes when he teed off Sunday for the fourth and final round.

Stanley played great, hitting some amazing shots, including one from under a cactus bush! On the final hole, Stanley sank a short, pressure-packed putt to win by one stroke.

It was a great comeback for Stanley and a great lesson for any kid who plays sports. It’s maybe the biggest lesson kids can learn from sports: how to come back from disappointment.

All athletes, whether they are pros or kids, get nervous and mess up sometimes. They may blow a layup or miss a wide-open goal or drop an easy pop-up.

It happens in all sports. In golf, the smallest change in how the player swings the club and hits the ball can make a big difference. So when a golfer gets nervous, the ball starts flying into sand traps or into the water instead of close to the hole.

When you mess up in a game, it’s hard to put it behind you. But the great thing about sports is that you get another chance — if you don’t quit. You can practice, learn from your mistakes and try again.

So the next time you or your team messes up — and it will happen — don’t think of it as a disaster. Think of it as a chance to practice your comeback.

Like Kyle Stanley.

Fred Bowen is the author of 17 sports books for kids. He once dropped two pop-ups in one inning of Little League baseball.

Swimmers/Divers finish in 15th

Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished in 15th place in the North Carolina 4A Eastern Regional Swimming and Diving Championships held this weekend. This was an exciting, fast meet with the Tri-Nine schools dominating the women's races and the CAP VIII dominating the men's races. The top 16 finishers scored for their schools and the top 8 go to the state championships next weekend in Cary. The men's Medley Relay team tied for 8th place with Apex, so at the end of the meet, when almost everyone had gone home, they had a swim-off to determine which team would advance to the state chamionships. The CAPS took a second off their time from 4 hours earlier, but were out touched by Apex.
Scoring points for the CAPS were:
Men's 200 Medley Relay - 8th place tie - Petch Lamson, Peter Daniel, Will Close, and Brandon Hodnett.
Women's 200 freestyle relay - 7th - Elisabeth Holmes, Rachel Shaw, Adaira Brewer, and Kelsey Moore
Men's 400 freestyle relay - 9th - Petch Lamson, Alex Haugh, Will Close, Brandon Hodnett
Will Close - 15th 200 freestyle, 5th 100 butterfly
Brandon Hodnett - 10th 50 freestyle
Bancks Holmes - 15th 500 freestyle

Kelsey Moore - 6th 200 freestyle, 4th 500 freestyle
William Sally - 16th in diving
Rachel Shaw - 16th 100 backstroke

Three Broughton football players sign letters of intent

By Erin Summers
Feb 1, 2012 at 5:57 p.m.

Three Broughton football players signed national letters of intent Wednesday to play at colleges across the state and ACC conference.

Drew Davis, Chris Mangus & Jabari Crenshaw sign national letters of intent.

Linebacker Drew Davis will play his college ball close to home, signing with NC State, after switching his commitment from Minnesota in January. The 6-foot-4 and 240 pound senior registered 150 tackles his junior season.

"I'm looking forward to going and getting in there, just competing for a spot, I just want to be on the field," Davis said. "I'm looking forward to working hard and being a part of the team."

Broughton running back Chris Mangus committed to Virginia Tech over offers from Clemson, NC State, East Carolina, Memphis, Virginia, Duke, Minnesota and Wake Forest.

"Being able to play at the next level is a blessing, being healthy and having fun," Mangus said. "Just having a great four years in college and just be the best that I can be."

The 5-foot-10 and 175 pound back runs a 4.46 second 40. As a junior Mangus notched 1,173 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.

Defensive back Jabari Crenshaw signed to play at Wingate University in North Carolina. The 5-foot-8, 165 pound senior also played on the offensive side of the ball, but had 34 solo tackles, 20 assisted and six interceptions.

"Playing football at college and in high school is a totally different thing, and I'm just ready to play at the next level," said Crenshaw.
