On Thursday, March 22nd the Varsity Caps emerged victorious at Raleigh’s Lions Park, defeating Cary High 8 to 2.  The Caps scattered nine hits in 35 at bats while committing only one error over 6 ½ innings.  Junior third baseman Cole Bellamy scored two runs, as did Freshman pitcher English Dean.  Also scoring for the Caps were Junior second baseman Morgan Buonpane, Senior left fielder Sarah Dodson, Junior shortstop Garett Hedgepeth, and Senior first baseman Kristi Parker.  The Caps retired the Imps in order in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd 5th and 6th innings.  Freshman pitcher Dean threw a one-hitter while walking one and notching three strikeouts in the Caps second victory of the season.

The following day, in an away game at Enloe High, the Varsity Caps defeated the Eagles 7 to 4.  The Caps went up 3-0 in the third inning, adding another three runs in the fourth.  Scoring for the Caps were Buonpane, Dodson, Hedgepeth, Bellamy, Dean, Parker, and Sophomore catcher Shannon Denny.  Freshman pitcher Dean notched four strikeouts while going the distance against the Enloe Eagles.

The Varsity season record is 3 wins, 5 losses.  Next game is Thursday, at home in Lions Park against Green Hope.

Men’s Golf on a Capital Roll

According to thesaurus.com the following words are synonyms for Capital: controlling, dominant, first, foremost, leading, major, and outstanding…..yep – that pretty much sums it up. In their fourth outing of the season Men’s golf dominated at North Ridge Country Club today. Gray skies and lightning gave way to a sun-filled afternoon - but the Caps still brought the thunder to North Raleigh. The starting six all went low on this 9-hole, Par 36 track. Leading the way were co-medalists Will Minton and Stephen Saleeby with exceptional 33’s, Harrison Rhoades followed with a beautiful round of 34, Court Settle and George Kilgore continued the fantastic play - both one under with a pair of 35’s, and Preyer Fountain finished it off with a par 36 to take the win once again! For those of you that think watching golf is about as exciting as watching paint dry (you know who you are) clearly you haven’t seen these guys play – it is awesome to behold. Come out and support them tomorrow as they take on the Cap8 at TPC Wakefield – I’m pretty sure they’ll make it worth your while!

Baseball: Varsity falls to Holly Springs

Story from: http://broughtonbaseball.com/

The Caps fall to Holly Springs 11-4. Coach Jones continues to shake up the lineup looking for the magical combination. With 3 games and conference play starting this week pitching is at a premium. A young staff with little varsity experience has proved to be a steep learning curve. The inability to close out innings and recover from mistakes has resulted in a 0-4 start. The offense scored 4 runs but also left 7 men on base in scoring position. The offense will need to capitalize on these opportunities as they start conference play today. Dom Ford continues to shine as he moves to the leadoff position going 2-4(2B), The Caps also got good offensive proformances from Austin Walker 2-4(2B) and Braden Williamson 1-3(3RBIs)

Boys LAX drop game to Christchurch School 16-8

The boys varsity lacrosse team lost Saturday to Christchurch School (VA) 16-8 in the 3rd Annual King of the Spring Face-Off Tournament.

LAX: Tough Loss for Lady Caps

Friday night was a perfect evening to play lacrosse. It started out with great food and socializing at the parents tailgating party, and the weather was beautiful. Although the score didn’t show it, we were in control of the game til the end. It was a tough, heartfelt fight as the Lady Caps lost to Wakefield 11 to 10.

We dominated the first half. Sydney Fry and Kelsey Dupere each scored two goals, and Alex Yankoglu and Charlotte Barbour each scored one. Emotions were high as Wakefield was awarded two yellow cards and we were given one. Kelsey Dupere had three aerial intercepts and we won 12 ground balls. The score at the end of the half was Broughton 6, Wakefield 4.
The second half was even more intense, as the girls fought hard to maintain their lead. Once again, tension was obvious as Wakefield was handed two more yellow cards, resulting in one player down for the remainder of the game. The lead kept changing with BHS up by two, then Wakefield catching up again. Alex Yankoglu scored two more goals, followed by Sydney Fry and Kelsey Dupere with one each. Each team had six draw controls.
The score was tied in the last two minutes of the game. With a Wakefield goal, it left us with less than one minute to tie the game. Unfortunately our luck and the clock ran out. The final score was Wakefield 11, Broughton Lady Caps 10.
