Caps Tennis takes conference title

Broughton senior Alex Pollock won the singles championship at the Cap 8 conference tournament held on Tuesday and Wednesday.  It was an all-Broughton final, as Alex battled teammate Carlton Bunn 6-3, 6-4 for the conference crown.  Freshmen Taylor Boole and Campbell Stone outlasted a team of seniors from Wakefield to win the consolation finals of the doubles competition in three sets, winning the third set in a tiebreaker.  All of these players along with Andrew Waddell and Patrick Longest in doubles now move on to the Mideast Regional tournament taking place next weekend at Millbrook Exchange Park.

The tennis team will play in the first round of the dual team state playoffs on Tuesday, when they will play the winner of the Midsouth Conference (likely Pine Crest High School in Pinehurst).  The Caps are on a roll and all six players are playing with determination in their quest for the state title.  Let's go Caps!!!

Swingin' Into The Record Books!

On Tuesday, April 24th Broughton Men's Golf set a new standard of excellence.

Not only did the Caps bring home the CAP8 Conference Title for the first time in 3 years - we placed 6 players on the CAP8 all conference team! Coaches Marlowe, Smith and Elsaesser say they have never heard of that happening before & they know it hasn't happened since the conference became the CAP8 configuration it is now.

The ten players with the lowest average scores for the season are awarded the All-Conference Medal.

CAP8 All Conference Broughton Men's Golf Medalists are:
Harrison Rhoades (2), Preyer Fountain (3), Will Minton (4), Court Settle (5), Stephen Saleeby (6) and George Kilgore (7).

In the final conference match of the season - the Caps faced a tough Hedingham course filled with firm greens and high winds. Preyer Fountain led Broughton with a tourney medalist score of 35. Will Minton was right behind with a 36. Stephen Saleeby shot a 37 and Harrison Rhoades shot 38 for a score of 146. That was more than enough to seal the victory and secure the Conference Title!

With that box checked the team moves on to Regionals with a State Championship mind-set. They have achieved the first goal they set for themselves at the beginning of the season - now they have resolved to accomplish the final two. Come cheer them on May 8th at Raleigh Country Club as they swing toward their goals at Regionals.

Congratulate these players when you see them - they worked hard for these achievements - in both regular practice....and I would venture to guess...most of their spare time - they are elated to have done it for Broughton!

Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.  Arnold Palmer

Varsity Softball Plays Hard Defense Against Wake Forest-Rolesville, Comes Up Short

Raleigh, NC  On Tuesday the Varsity Caps lost a hard fought game to perennial Cap 8 Conference powerhouse Wake Forest-Rolesville.  Sloppy base running and a lack of offense marred what was otherwise a marvelous defensive outing.  On offense the Caps had only 3 runners reach base, stranding Sophomore catcher Shannon Denny in the top of the 6th at third base after reaching on a walk and stealing two bases.  Freshman English Dean and Senior Sarah Dodson shared pitching duty, holding the Cougars to only 7 hits with one strikeout and one walk combined over 6 ½ innings.

Defensively, the Caps held the Cougars to 2 runs in the third inning, with Dean giving up 2 hits in the bottom of the third.  The Caps turned a 1-4-5 double play in the bottom of the third, Dean to Junior Second Baseman Morgan Buonpane to Junior Third Baseman Cole Bellamy.  Bellamy also pulled off an unassisted tag on the lead runner at third in the bottom of the fifth.  The Caps 10 strikeouts in 22 at bats were not enough to prevail, but the ladies showed a lot of grit in holding the Cougars to a 2-0 loss.

Next game is Friday, home versus Enloe.  The JV plays Wake Forest-Rolesville at home on Thursday.

On The Back Nine

There's a lot going on for the Men's Golf team as we approach the proverbial back nine of the season. In a non-conference match on Thursday, April 19th the Caps took on Cardinal Gibbons at Raleigh Golf Association. George Kilgore led Broughton with a 73, John Irby shot a 77, Kirkland Caison shot 78 and John Hogan shot an 81 for a team total of 309. Even though the Crusaders won by three strokes our coaches were thrilled to field some different players - those team members gained valuable experience that will serve us well next year!

The men take on the conference at Hedingham in the final CAP8 match of the season today. Come on out and watch the Caps close out the regular season with a solid win - they aim to tee-it-up to bring home that conference title for the first time in two years & with a mantra to finish strong as they transition into Regional / State Championship mode...it promises to be an exciting afternoon of golf!

On that note - Regionals will be held at Raleigh Country Club on Tuesday, May 8th. On Sunday, April 22nd the coaches announced the team for Regionals as: George Kilgore, Preyer Fountain, Court Settle, Will Minton, Harrison Rhoades and Stephen Saleeby (left to right pictured below)

As an aside - this Men's golf team has not only represented Broughton on the couse during regular conference and non-conference play - most of them spend their weekends with a club in their hands. Six members of the team played in the UNC Golf For Promise Junior Classic at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill last weekend. Five of our players finished in the top 10 in the tournament with Broughton's Will Minton winning the high school division. Will shot a great round of 68 - beating the states number one ranked player by 2 shots! Preyer Fountain shot 71 to finish 3rd, Harrison Rhoades with a round of 72 finished 5th,  Kirkland Caison shot a 74 with a three under par score on his back nine! Stephen Saleeby shot a a solid 75 and Sam Holden had an 82 to round out the BHS representation. Go Caps!

Caps Tennis Wins Conference Title

The Broughton boy's tennis team closed out the regular season last Thursday with an 8-1 victory over Sanderson.   Winning players for Broughton were Andrew Waddell, Alex Pollock, Dixon Ferrell, Bryant Bost, Patrick Bryant, and David McGee in singles, and Taylor Boole/Campbell Stone and Bryant Bost/Dixon Ferrell in doubles.  Seniors Bryant Bost, Dixon Ferrell and Alex Pollock were recognized after the match for Senior Day.

The win moves Broughton to 15-3 and 13-1 in the conference for the regular season.  Broughton shared the conference championship with Wakefield, and the seeding for the state playoffs likely will be decided by a coin toss as the teams split their regular season matches.

The team now moves into post-season play. In tennis, state titles are awarded both to individual champions and team champions.  The conference tournament will be held this week to award individual champions in both singles and doubles, with the top players moving on to regional and then state individual competition.  The dual team format for the team state championship starts on May 1.  The playoff brackets are not yet set, but Broughton should be one of the favorites to compete for the state title.

Round in the Rough

Apologies for the tardiness of the reporting....this BHS sports blogger has had trouble getting back into the swing of things after Spring Break! Plus - it's just more fun to report about our triumphs!

Nevertheless....the windy day and tough greens got the best of our Men's golf team at Wildwood Green on Monday. Wildwood is Leesville's home course and they came out firing - posting a 141 for the day with two players under par - besting our team total of 143. Even Harrison Rhoades' beautiful round of 34 couldn't save the Caps from a two stroke loss to the Pride on their own track.

In the CAP8 conference race we remain in first place....but just barely....we're hanging onto a 2.5 point lead over the Pride going into the last conference match on April 24th at Hedingham. The men will finish the regular season at Pinehurst #8 on April 25th in a non-conference challenge match. The invitation to come to Pinehurst for the day was issued by Pinecrest High School to Broughton and Leesville - a great warm up on the course set to host the State Championships!

You've got to finish strong - so here goes! The Caps boast five players in the CAP8 top ten for individual scoring - the most of any team in the conference: Harrison Rhoades in third, Preyer Fountain in fourth, Court Settle in fifth, George Kilgore in sixth and Will Minton in eighth, Stephen Saleeby is just barely outside in eleventh place & sure to play his way right back into the top ten on April 24th! Way to go guys! Now......think happy swing thoughts and bring home the conference title!

Next up - the Caps will take on Cardinal Gibbons in a non-conference match on April 18th at Raleigh Golf Association.

Caps Men's Tennis Beats East Chapel Hill and Enloe

In back to back solid victories, men's tennis won Tuesday afternoon against conference opponent Enloe High 9-0 taking all singles and doubles courts. Winning players in singles and doubles (in order) were Andrew Waddell, Alex Pollock Carlton Bunn, Patrick Longest, Taylor Boole, and Campbell Stone.  On Wednesday our boys dispatched long-time non-conference rival East Chapel Hill by a score of 7-2.  Our guys played very well and showed they were ready to play in this match.  Special kudos to Andrew Waddell on court 1 and Campbell Stone on court 5 for coming off a first set loss to win their matches in tiebreakers to some determined East Chapel Hill players.   Other winning players with strong performances at singles were Alex Pollock at no. 2, Carlton Bunn at no. 3, and Taylor Boole at No. 4.  Doubles winners were Alex Pollock/Carlton Bunn and Taylor Boole/Campbell Stone. Our next match is Thursday at Heritage.

Review: Varsity Softball Drops Non-Conference Games

Raleigh, NC  On Thursday, March 29th at Lions Park the Varsity Caps were shut out 13-0 by Green Hope High in a non-conference matchup.  Thus endeth the blog post . . .

Raleigh, NC  On Friday, March 30th, also at home at Lions Park, the Varsity Caps lost a close one to Chapel Hill High.  With the score tied 3-3 after one, and still tied 4-4 after 2 innings, the Tigers went up 6-4 in the top of the 3rd.  The Caps rallied, adding a run (Freshman English Dean) in the 5th and another (Junior Cole Bellamy) in the bottom of the 6th.  Unfortunately the Tigers went up 7-6 in the top of the 7th on a first pitch homerun.  The Caps came up with three hits in the bottom of the 7th, loading the bases on clutch hits by Sophomore Shannon Denny, Junior Morgan Buonpane, and Junior Katie Munger, but couldn’t score to win or extend the game.

The Caps had 19 hits in 40 at bats.  Freshman Marisa Buonpane went 2 for 4 with a walk and scored 2 runs.  Morgan Buonpane went 3 for 5 with the clutch hit in the bottom of the 7th and was caught stealing in the 4th.  Munger was 2 for 4 with one walk and one run scored.  Bellamy went 3 for 5, and was put out at third trying to stretch a double in the 1st.  Dean was 2 for 4, scoring 2 runs;  Junior Garett Hedgepeth went 2 for 4, getting out in the 6th on a Fielder’s Choice.  Junior Val Guzzo was 2 for 4 with a stolen base.  Denny went 2 for 4, Senior Sarah Dodson was 0 for 1, Junior Maggie Carraway was 0 for 0 with a walk, and Senior Kristi Parker went 1 for 2.  The Caps left 9 runners stranded over 7 innings.

Dodson pitched 3 complete innings, with 1 strikeout, 3 hits, issuing 1 walk.  Dean came in to relieve in the 4th, giving up 3 hits, with 2 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk.

Next week the Varsity Caps take on Wakefield (home), Middle Creek (away) and Sanderson (away).

Swingin' Through the Break

While many of you were knee deep in the water somewhere - the Broughton Men's Golf Team was knocking 'em out strong at Treyburn Country Club in Durham.

For the sixth season the Tarheel Golf Association sponsored the NC High School Invitational at one of the most mentally and physically challenging courses in the State. A true test of golf will - the course won the day. Broughton came to play but just couldn't get anything going on this formidable track. Despite the rigid competition and the unyielding course - the Caps were able to secure a Runner-Up finish by three strokes.

Full breakdown of the field and scores can be found here: http://www.tyga.org/

Vowing to remember this as the one that got away the team is more determined than ever to secure the Cap8 conference title in the coming weeks - wear down their adversaries at Regionals - and ultimately take their talents to Pinehurst for the State Championships.

No-one will ever have golf under his thumb. No round ever will be so good it could not have been better. Perhaps this is why golf is the greatest of games. You are not playing a human adversary; you are playing a game. You are playing old man par. It is nevertheless a game of considerable passion, either of the explosive type, or that which burns inwardly and sears the soul. I never learned anything from a match that I won.
