Review: Varsity Softball Drops Non-Conference Games

Raleigh, NC  On Thursday, March 29th at Lions Park the Varsity Caps were shut out 13-0 by Green Hope High in a non-conference matchup.  Thus endeth the blog post . . .

Raleigh, NC  On Friday, March 30th, also at home at Lions Park, the Varsity Caps lost a close one to Chapel Hill High.  With the score tied 3-3 after one, and still tied 4-4 after 2 innings, the Tigers went up 6-4 in the top of the 3rd.  The Caps rallied, adding a run (Freshman English Dean) in the 5th and another (Junior Cole Bellamy) in the bottom of the 6th.  Unfortunately the Tigers went up 7-6 in the top of the 7th on a first pitch homerun.  The Caps came up with three hits in the bottom of the 7th, loading the bases on clutch hits by Sophomore Shannon Denny, Junior Morgan Buonpane, and Junior Katie Munger, but couldn’t score to win or extend the game.

The Caps had 19 hits in 40 at bats.  Freshman Marisa Buonpane went 2 for 4 with a walk and scored 2 runs.  Morgan Buonpane went 3 for 5 with the clutch hit in the bottom of the 7th and was caught stealing in the 4th.  Munger was 2 for 4 with one walk and one run scored.  Bellamy went 3 for 5, and was put out at third trying to stretch a double in the 1st.  Dean was 2 for 4, scoring 2 runs;  Junior Garett Hedgepeth went 2 for 4, getting out in the 6th on a Fielder’s Choice.  Junior Val Guzzo was 2 for 4 with a stolen base.  Denny went 2 for 4, Senior Sarah Dodson was 0 for 1, Junior Maggie Carraway was 0 for 0 with a walk, and Senior Kristi Parker went 1 for 2.  The Caps left 9 runners stranded over 7 innings.

Dodson pitched 3 complete innings, with 1 strikeout, 3 hits, issuing 1 walk.  Dean came in to relieve in the 4th, giving up 3 hits, with 2 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk.

Next week the Varsity Caps take on Wakefield (home), Middle Creek (away) and Sanderson (away).
