Help Needed From CAPS Fans

Many of you will be spending time at a local pool this summer.  If you see any Broughton students at the diving board doing front flips and back dives, please encourage them to dive for Broughton next year.  We would like to have at least 5 men and 5 women divers next year.  Their scores count as part of the swim team scores at the conference, regional, and state meets.  As of right now, Coach Dubois anticipates having five male divers and only one female diver next year.  Send names of any divers to rdubois@wcpss.net and Coach Dubois will contact them in August.  Gymnasts usually make good divers.  If any gymnasts want to try diving, send Coach Dubois their names as well.

Caps Men's Tennis Win State Quarterfinals vs. Wilmington Laney/Fall to Wakefield in Semi's

Caps men's tennis wins against Wilmington Laney on Tuesday night after a two day effort to try to get the match in because of rain.  The team was almost to Wilmington on  Monday and had to turn around and come back to Raleigh.  They headed down Tuesday, started play, and stopped again for rain before moving to the somewhat drier courts at New Hanover High to finish the match.   In the best match of the day, No. 1 Andrew Waddell beat A.J. Stillwell in winning 6-3, 7-5.  Other winning players were Carlton Bunn, Patrick Longest, and Taylor Boole giving Broughton a 4-2 lead going into doubles.  Alex Pollock and Carlton Bunn clinced the match at No. 2 doubles winning 10-3.

Tired but tough, our boys played Cap 8 rival Wakefield Wednesday night on neutral courts at Millbrook High in a effort to advance to the State finals this Saturday.  It was not meant to be despite our guys playing their hearts out.  Caps dropped courts 1, 2, and 3, but winning players for the Caps on 4,5, and 6 were Patrick Longest, Taylor Boole, and Campbell Stone.  Carlton Bunn at No. 3 singles played a very strong match for the third time this year splitting sets with Wakefield player, Andrew Belonga.  Bunn lost the tiebreak, but gave it his all the entire match.

In doubles, Alex Pollock and Carlton Bunn played strong, but came up short 10-6 in a long match at No. 2 doubles.  No. 3 doubles of Taylor Boole and Campbell Stone played another long match, but lost 10-7.  Play was suspended for court No. 1 because Wakefield had won the match.

We could not be more proud of our team and Broughton continued it's strong tennis tradition by making it to the State semi-final match!

2012 Men's Golf 4A State Champions

Ladies and Gentlemen.....after a season of goal setting and achieving - the Caps are your 2012 Men's Golf 4A State Champions!

What a difference a day makes - the sun came out in Pinehurst today and boy did it shine on the Caps!

After finishing the first day with a team score of even par and a 12 stroke lead over their closest competitor the Caps knew they couldn't take any shot for granted - they headed to their respective tee boxes with this one last goal in mind.

Stephen Saleeby led the Caps in scoring - after a 67 on day one - Saleeby shot a 73 today to take the individual title, Harrison Rhoades came out on fire after a round of 76 on Monday and put up an outstanding round of 68 today to take 4th in the individual lineup.

Court Settle kept it steady with a 75 both days of the competition, Will Minton and George Kilgore both had rounds of 78 today and Preyer Fountain finished things out with an 81 - for a day two total of 294 and a team tournament total of 582.

The tension was thick as spectators waited for the etching in of every last score. In the end the Caps hoisted the trophy with a profound sense of accomplishment - they headed back to Raleigh with a beautiful new piece of hardware for the trophy case - well done Caps, well done!

On Their Way To The Final 18

Men's Golf teed it up at Pinehurst No. 8 for the first round of the 4A State Championships. Tom Fazio designed No. 8 as a tribute to Donald Ross and the course opened in 1996 - the track makes use of signature Ross features from slopes and swales to rolling greens and false fronts.  A tough test of golf on a sunny day with no wind - Pinehurst No. 8 can prove a daunting task in the wind and rain! But the Caps were up to the challenge - led by Stephen Saleeby who put up another extraordinary round of 67, Will Minton and George Kilgore shot a couple of splendid 73's, Court Settle kept it going with a 75, Harrison Rhoades finished the day with a 76, and Preyer Fountain closed it out for the Caps with a 78 for a team score of even par for the day at 288 - a 12 stroke advantage over their closest adversary.
So........going into day 2......it is the final round of their remarkable season......the Caps can almost see the flag in the distance - waiting for them to putt out and conquer their final goal - The State Championship.
Go low Caps, Go low - we're all cheering you on from Raleigh - ready to make space in that trophy case for some serious hardware.

Men's Golf Keeping the Ball in Play

The Broughton Motto is - Approve Ye That Which Is Excellent – Broughton Men's golf we approve your excellence wholeheartedly!

On Tuesday, May 8th , a sunny day at the beautiful, par 71 Raleigh Country Club, the Men's golf team brought home the Regional Championship!

Stephen Saleeby put up a scorching 4-under par 67 - by far the low round of the day – good enough to take Regional Medalist honors and lead the Caps to victory! And the hits kept coming - Freshman Preyer Fountain had an excellent round of 72, Senior & Team Captain George Kilgore carded a terrific round of 73 and Freshman Will Minton closed the door on the competition shooting 74 for a team total of 286. We took 6 players to Regionals and in golf the best four scores count towards the team total - Freshman Harrison Rhoades shot 75 and Sophomore Court Settle had a solid 78. Coach Marlowe said “To put that in perspective, Court and Harrison's scores were 5th and 6th best for Broughton but were top 20 Regional scores and would have counted on every other team! That is solid play from top to bottom.”

The Regional Team of Preyer Fountain, George Kilgore, Will Minton, Harrison Rhoades, Stephen Saleeby, Court Settle and alternate Kirkland Caison is the team we are taking to States – they are balanced and riddled with talent – anyone can step up on any day and go low and that is what it will take to bring home the State title.

When the 2012 season began this team set three definite goals:
1) Win the conference 2) Win Regionals 3) Win the 4A State Championship.

With surgical precision the Caps have out-played, out-putted and out-witted their opponents up until this point. But there is awareness among the team that their toughest, truest test of golf will come next Monday and Tuesday – May 14th-15th on Pinehurst Course No.8. So while their bodies are here – their minds have already teed off.

For today Caps – celebrate your victory – enjoy it ... then tomorrow get back to work! You have spent this 2012 season collecting a lot of nice hardware to put in that Holliday Gymnasium case ... now go to Pinehurst and bring home the biggest! We will all be cheering you on from Raleigh!

Success in this game depends less on strength of body than strength of mind and character.

Lax: Caps Lose a Thriller

By Nate Taylor - ntaylor@newsobserver.com

RALEIGH Senior Daniel Hughey knew this could have been his last high school lacrosse game. Hughey had plenty of time to think about that when Athens Drive’s game against Broughton was put on pause for more than an hour due to a lightning delay.

Hughey didn’t let the pressure affect him. Instead, he played some of his best lacrosse in the fourth quarter.

Along with goalkeeper Dane Peddicord, Hughey led the Jaguars to a thrilling 6-5 victory in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs.
Dane Angell #5, shooting a late goal.

Hughey, an attacker, scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left on the clock.
,“This is insane,” said Hughey, who also had an assist. “We were fighting for our lives, and I know this is the last shot I have at a state championship.”

With the game tied, Hughey watched teammate Brandon Lohmiller steal the ball from the Caps. Lohmiller found Hughey wide open near midfield.

Hughey sprinted for the goal. A few Broughton defenders chased him, but he had a clear shot at the net.

“I knew that it if didn’t go in, they could get the ball and go up a goal,” Hughey said. “I just felt like that was the right time to go and take a shot.”

Hughey’s shot went past Broughton goalkeeper Austen Johnson and into the net, which caused the entire Athens Drive bench to erupt in celebration.

Though Broughton (13-2) never led, the Caps tied the game on four occasions.

Peddicord was a big reason the Jaguars (12-3) never trailed. Peddicord backstopped Athens Drive’s defense with eight saves, some of which he had to make in midair.

“(In high) pressure situations, you hope your guys execute,” Athens Drive coach James Cornicelli said. “Dane stepped us huge for us.”

Peddicord’s most important save came after Hughey’s goal.

With 20 second remaining, Broughton advanced the ball down field. As time expired, Peddicord deflected Broughton’s attempt to send the game to overtime.

“I was just trying to communicate the best I could to keep everybody as tight as possible,” Peddicord said. “The last shot just dinged off the top of my head. It was a really nice shot and it would have gone in.”

Broughton responded early in the third quarter. Attacker Dane Angell leaped in the air to score his goal. Then, attacker Davis Weaver found attacker Justin Moore close to the net to tie the game at 2-2.

Just when it appeared the Caps had all the momentum, the officials delayed the game for an hour and 10 minutes.

Lax: Lady Caps win in Greensboro

The Lady Caps jumped to an early lead against the Page Pirates and left Greensboro with a 15-6 first round playoff victory.

Baseball: Varsity Stays in Playoff Picture

from BroughtonBaseball.com

The Caps got a big win on Tuesday against Heritage. With 2 games remaining in the regular season, the Caps still control their own destiny. Broughton won the slugfest 14-10 on a hot muggy night. With every starter getting at least one hit the Caps put themselves back in the driver seat to get into the State Playoffs. With a win tonight and another win on Monday the worst they can do is end up in a tie with Heritage. If that happens a one game playoff will be held to fill the last State Playoff spot.

A 40 min lightning delay and hot muggy conditions put a strain on both pitching staffs Tuesday night but the Caps bats picked up the slack. Jr. Max Magallanes led the team going 3-4 (2 Runs). Jr. Joe Bialkowski (2-5 2B RBI), Soph Rob Case (2-5 RBI), Jr. Wilson White (1-2 RBI), Jr. Austin Walker (1-3 RBI 3 Runs), Jr. Maclin Bathelor (1-4 2 RBIs), Jr Jackson Williams (1-2 RBI), Fr. Dom Ford (1-5 2 RBIs) and Sr. Zi Hopkins (1-5 RBI)

The Caps next game will be at Wakefield on Friday night 7:00pm- Come support the Caps!!!!

Overall Record (6-15) Conference (5-7)

Baseball: JV Falls to Heritage 7-2

from BroughtonBaseball.com

Broughton seemed disconnected today. The team played some great defense, yet we didn’t see the energy transfer to the plate. Yarborough started for The Caps. Heritage seemed to have everything going their way. They scored 3 runs in the 1stoff one hit. Morris was behind the plate, and had a nice play to Eller for a run down at 3rdto stop Heritage. Broughton was unable to score in the 1st.

The second inning was no different for Heritage, after 2 quick outs, they scored 3 more runs. Eller led off with a hit for Broughton, Rotchford drove him in with an RBI single. Heritage 6, Caps 1

In the 3rd, Yarborough started controlling the pace. 2 infield plays and a K shut down Heritage. Neither team scored.

The 4thinning was no different, with both pitchers controlling the bats. Broughton defense stopped Heritage which included a rundown at 2nd. No runs scored.

The 5thinning was 3 up, 3 down for both teams.

Heritage scored 1 run in the 6th, before Baldwin threw a runner out at 3rdfrom center. Heritage 7, Caps 1

In the 7th, Johnson closed for Broughton, 3up 3 down with a K. In their last ditch effort, Eller led off for The Caps, and was hit with a wild pitch. Saba pinch ran for Eller. Rotchford hit his second RBI for Broughton. Then 2 infield plays later, it’s game over for Broughton.

Heritage 7, Caps 2
Rotchford 2-3 with 2 RBIs, Sipila 1-3, Eller 1-1 with 2 BB
Overall Record (10-8) Conference (6-6)
