2012 Softball Senior Day

Lion’s Park, Raleigh –  On Monday, May 7th the Varsity Caps took on the Sanderson Spartans and celebrated Senior Day.  In a moving pre-game ceremony, Head Coach Dorrian Stephens introduced each Senior player along with her parents, while Assistant Coach Chris Frasier presented each player with a yellow rose.

Following the Senior Day ceremony the Caps gave no quarter to the Spartans in an 8-0 shutout over 6½ innings.  Freshman English Dean started the game in the circle, allowing two hits and notching 8 strikeouts over 4 innings.  Senior Sarah Dodson came in for the 5th, also allowing 2 hits while recording 3 strikeouts over 3 innings.  Dodson also recorded the final out in the final game of her final season on a Sanderson grounder back to the pitcher’s circle to end the top of the 7th and the game.

The Caps committed only 2 errors on defense.  Sophomore catcher Shannon Denny and Junior Second Baseman Morgan Buonpane anchored a tough Caps defense throughout the game.

On offense, the Caps notched 10 hits in 31 at bats and left 5 runners stranded.  Leading hitters were Junior Morgan Buonpane (3 for 4), Junior Cole Bellamy (2 fo 3), Junior Val Guzzo (2 for 3), and Sophomore Shannon Denny (2 for 2, walk), and Junior Garett Hedgepeth (2 for 4).  Scoring runs for the Caps were DeanBellamy (2), Guzzo (2), Dodson, and Denny (2).
