Caps men's tennis wins against Wilmington Laney on Tuesday night after a two day effort to try to get the match in because of rain. The team was almost to Wilmington on Monday and had to turn around and come back to Raleigh. They headed down Tuesday, started play, and stopped again for rain before moving to the somewhat drier courts at New Hanover High to finish the match. In the best match of the day, No. 1 Andrew Waddell beat A.J. Stillwell in winning 6-3, 7-5. Other winning players were Carlton Bunn, Patrick Longest, and Taylor Boole giving Broughton a 4-2 lead going into doubles. Alex Pollock and Carlton Bunn clinced the match at No. 2 doubles winning 10-3.
Tired but tough, our boys played Cap 8 rival Wakefield Wednesday night on neutral courts at Millbrook High in a effort to advance to the State finals this Saturday. It was not meant to be despite our guys playing their hearts out. Caps dropped courts 1, 2, and 3, but winning players for the Caps on 4,5, and 6 were Patrick Longest, Taylor Boole, and Campbell Stone. Carlton Bunn at No. 3 singles played a very strong match for the third time this year splitting sets with Wakefield player, Andrew Belonga. Bunn lost the tiebreak, but gave it his all the entire match.
In doubles, Alex Pollock and Carlton Bunn played strong, but came up short 10-6 in a long match at No. 2 doubles. No. 3 doubles of Taylor Boole and Campbell Stone played another long match, but lost 10-7. Play was suspended for court No. 1 because Wakefield had won the match.
We could not be more proud of our team and Broughton continued it's strong tennis tradition by making it to the State semi-final match!
