Men's Golf Keeping the Ball in Play

The Broughton Motto is - Approve Ye That Which Is Excellent – Broughton Men's golf we approve your excellence wholeheartedly!

On Tuesday, May 8th , a sunny day at the beautiful, par 71 Raleigh Country Club, the Men's golf team brought home the Regional Championship!

Stephen Saleeby put up a scorching 4-under par 67 - by far the low round of the day – good enough to take Regional Medalist honors and lead the Caps to victory! And the hits kept coming - Freshman Preyer Fountain had an excellent round of 72, Senior & Team Captain George Kilgore carded a terrific round of 73 and Freshman Will Minton closed the door on the competition shooting 74 for a team total of 286. We took 6 players to Regionals and in golf the best four scores count towards the team total - Freshman Harrison Rhoades shot 75 and Sophomore Court Settle had a solid 78. Coach Marlowe said “To put that in perspective, Court and Harrison's scores were 5th and 6th best for Broughton but were top 20 Regional scores and would have counted on every other team! That is solid play from top to bottom.”

The Regional Team of Preyer Fountain, George Kilgore, Will Minton, Harrison Rhoades, Stephen Saleeby, Court Settle and alternate Kirkland Caison is the team we are taking to States – they are balanced and riddled with talent – anyone can step up on any day and go low and that is what it will take to bring home the State title.

When the 2012 season began this team set three definite goals:
1) Win the conference 2) Win Regionals 3) Win the 4A State Championship.

With surgical precision the Caps have out-played, out-putted and out-witted their opponents up until this point. But there is awareness among the team that their toughest, truest test of golf will come next Monday and Tuesday – May 14th-15th on Pinehurst Course No.8. So while their bodies are here – their minds have already teed off.

For today Caps – celebrate your victory – enjoy it ... then tomorrow get back to work! You have spent this 2012 season collecting a lot of nice hardware to put in that Holliday Gymnasium case ... now go to Pinehurst and bring home the biggest! We will all be cheering you on from Raleigh!

Success in this game depends less on strength of body than strength of mind and character.
