Women's Tennis: Broughton 9, Sanderson 0

We were touched today when the Sanderson tennis team arrived at the courts with posters honoring Grace and Janie.

We hope that Grace, who has played on the team for four years, and Janie, who was a member of the team her freshman and sophomore year, feel the love from our Cap 8 family.

The Caps enjoyed a great conference win over a strong Sanderson team, who has benefitted from the addition of several talented freshmen. Here we go, Caps!

Women's Tennis: Broughton 8, Panther Creek 1

Broughton took on Panther Creek in an off-conference challenge match this afternoon. The Caps wore purple arm bands to show solidarity with their friends who were injured in a terrible car accident last week. The girls also made a get-well poster for Grace, Janie, Tessa, and Madeline. We miss you!

The teams played eight game pro-sets for both the singles and doubles matches. Maggie Kane was up 3-0 when her opponent, Megan Smith, had to retire due to chest pains. Kara Summerford toughed out a 9-7 win against Jordan Strickland. And Adrienne Overcash joined the doubles lineup for the first time since sustaining an ankle injury early in the season.

It was a great win for the Caps!

Victory at Providence
This past weekend was one of highs and lows.  30 XC team members left school Friday, traveled to Charlotte, only to be confronted with the news of the horrific car accident involving senior XC team members, Janie, Tessa, and Madeline and senior tennis player, Grace. The team rallied Saturday morning and raced in honor of the girls in the Providence Invitational at McAlpine Park.

Megan Sullivan led the girls team with an impressive win over NXN Nationals qualifier (2011) Sydney Foreman with a new personal best of 18:12 propelling herself into contention for an individual state title.  Kelsey Moore ran a personal best (19:10) with one shoe untied for the majority of the race. Strong performances backing up our front runners were had by: Ayla Gizlice, Kristen Gardner, and freshman Kylee Vaughn. The girls finished a strong 6th place in the Varsity Race after a very emotional night - proving again that we are a team that will compete for a podium finish late in the season in Kernersville (State Meet location). Looking forward to getting a complete picture of what our girls team can accomplish when we get Mattie Blue and Alison Berger back to toeing the starting line and racing.
The boys team was led by the Junior Class as all seven of our varsity runners started with a personal best, pushing the season goals and expectations even higher than years past. William Roberson and John Dalton Rohr ran 15:40, while Asher Smith-Rose dropped under the 16:00 minute barrier as well. Freshman runner Jeremy Brown surprised everyone but himself with a top 12 finish and impressive 16:02 mark to begin what will surely be a fun four years. The front pack was held together by senior leader and captain Allen Lawrence who finished 5th for the Caps and 16th place overall (16:10). Sophomores Will Sandin and Peter Millsaps continue to provide the depth needed to be a top team by finishing in the top 50, but don't be surprised if one or both make runs for the top 5 in the next few races.

Thank you to everyone for the continued prayers and thoughts for Janie, Tessa, Madeline and Grace as they continue to heal. - Coach Christian

Women's Tennis: Broughton 9, Wakefield 0

The Lady Caps travelled to Wakefield this afternoon for their second conference match. On everyone's mind was the absence of fellow teammate Grace Barnard, who was injured in a tragic car crash last weekend. Many thanks to the Wakefield team for their show of support and friendship.

Junior Maggie Kane fought through a challenging match against freshman Suzane Boyden to win in an exciting third set tiebreaker. The remaining matches were competitive, with Broughton taking all nine courts.

Women's Tennis Team Wins Port City Invitational

The Broughton Women's Tennis Team started off the season strong by winning the Port City Invitational Tournament in Wilmington this weekend!

In round one, the Caps beat Ashley High School 9-0. It was a great opportunity for Coach Laura Davidson to showcase some of the new talent on our team, including freshmen Alison Austin, Sidney Saleeby, and Mary Ellis Fanney.

In round two, Broughton pulled out a win against Mount Airy High School, 5-4. Senior Sara O'Han showed great determination by toughing out both a 2nd set tiebreaker and a 3rd set tiebreaker to win the definitive match.

In a surprise upset, New Hanover High School beat out Hoggard to meet the Caps in the finals. The Caps took all six singles courts, and New Hanover opted not to play doubles. It was a great start to a promising season!

Fall Sports Cranking Up

Seven fall sports are up and running long before the first day of classes. Cheerleading, cross country, football, ladies' golf, men's soccer, ladies' tennis and volleyball are all in season.

Now we need your help to provide scores and pictures about all of these teams for this blog.  Few of these sports are covered by the local media, so its a real challenge for Broughton sports fans to keep up.  If you are a parent, student or fan interested in helping us out, please send me an email.  Any help is appreciated by the players and the 160+ email subscribers!

2012 Men's Soccer Alumni Day - Aug 30

The 2012 Men's Soccer Alumni Day will be on Thursday, August 30th.  We will take time during this home match, BHS -vs- W. Johnston, to honor and thank our Alumni Players.  Match time is 6:30pm.  Parents are invited too. We will introduce the players individually by class during halftime of this match. We will have light refreshments afterwards.

It is not a big enough function to warrant long distance travel, but if you are in town, we would like to honor you.  If you plan to attend, please write me back ASAP along with your class year, so I'll have the information.   Help spread the word to Soccer Alumni.   Keep in touch.

All the Best,
Izzy Hernandez

PS. If you speak to any Soccer Alumni and they are not receiving this information from me and would like to, have them write me and ask to be added to the Alumni list for players and parents.
