JV Girls Volleyball- Steps up

Hello Sports Fans,
Since the last post, the JV girls volleyball team has continued their strong season.

On September 18th, the Lady Caps welcomed Heritage to Holliday Gym scored a home victory 25-9 and 25-17.   The game was well played and Caitlyn Cooley's strong serving was instrumental in the win.

September 20th, the Caps, still at home, faced the Wakefield Wolverines.  In a challenging game with a lot of hard fought rallies, Broughton's JV girls managed to win in straight games again.  25-17 and 25-20.

This week, the Caps were still in action and good form with two more "in conference" matches.  On September 25th, the Caps took it on the road to arch rival Sanderson and pulled down victory 25-13 and 25-22.  As a loyal BHS alum, I say if you only win one game a year, make it against the Spartans!  Way to go girls!

Today, the team was back on the road facing the Millbrook Wildcats.  Not to digress, but if you only get to win two per year, make it Sanderson and Millbrook (or Cary)...  In any regard, the Wildcats were really on their game, playing the JV team in a tough match.  Game one was tight, but the Caps pulled it out from behind 25-23.  Game two took a nasty turn with the Wildcats coming out strong and winning 21-25.  Following the break, the Wildcats continued strong.  Down 13-10, the Caps won a side-out then rallied eleven straight points on Marisa Bounpane's great serve.  The team was able to close it out 25-15 and score the win.

The team is really having a great year.  The fantastic turn around this team has achieved under the leadership of the coaching team is a great story.  The JV squad is 13-2 overall and 12-1 in conference, a fantastic improvement over last year.  Congratulations to Coach Enid Badillo and Coach Joy Daniel.

Also, we have had a good crowd of support for both the JV and the Varsity games.  While understandably better at home, the support at home and away is appreciated, especially from the student body.  The games are exciting, so come on out and support Caps Volleyball.

Golf: Caps finish 4th at Heritage

The Lady Caps golf team battled the other 7 members of the Cap 8 and the rain last Monday to finish their 4th match of the year in 4th place.  Overall for the season, the Caps hold on to 2nd place overall, 7 points behind leader Heritage, and staying one point ahead of WF-Rolesville.
Eliza Taylor, Lizzie Tollison and Ellen Shook at practice.

Like every other match this year, Katie Brown led the Caps shooting a 43.  Lily Kate Tollison had her second best of the year to post a 46, and Rachel Lea finished the scoring for the Caps with a 52.  Ellen Shook played in her third consecutive match posting a 54, while Elizabeth Tollison posted a 57.

Medalist for the match shot a 35 and was done by both Heritage's Rhea Bhatia and WF-R's Amanda Levy.  Bhatia leads all individual golfers with a season average of 38.25 just 0.25 lower than her teammate Kendra Dalton.

Individually, the Lady Caps' season averages are strong.  Katie is currently 6th overall with a 42.25, Rachel and Lily Kate are tied for 11th overall with a 47.75.  Ellen is currently 19th with a 52 average and Caroline Zevenhuizen is 28th with a 56.  These are very respectable scores for our players -  a total of 51 golfers are playing in the Cap8 this season and a different course is played each week.

Tuesday the Caps travel to the challenging Lonnie Poole golf course at NC State to try to get their second victory of the year.

JV Volleyball Girls Keep It Rolling

The JV Volleyball squad has continued a great effort and results since the last "blog in"!

The Lady Caps followed the return from their post Labor Day win against Millbrook with a September 6 away win against Leesville.  The Caps took the first game 25-17.  They followed up with another nail biter victory 25-23.

The following Monday, September 10th, the team travelled to Athens to face the Jaguars.  After losing the first game 21-25, the Caps rallied in the second to win 25-17.  The Caps were then able to take the rubber match 25-18 to score a great in-conference victory.

No time for rest, the Caps welcomed the Wake Forest Rolesville Cougars to Holiday Gym on Tuesday.  The JV squad was able to win this one in straight games 25-21 and 25-19.

In the third match of the week, the Caps boarded the bus and took the floor against in-conference rivals the Enloe Eagles.  The Caps clutched victory 25-19 in game one and mirrored the performance in game two.

Congratulations to the team and coach Enid Badillo on the great performance.  We are almost to the middle of the season and the JV team already has a CAP 8 record of 5 wins and 1 loss, on track for a great year.  Keep up the good work.

The team continues to improve and the action is great so come on out and watch the Caps Volleyball teams.

Golfers finish 3rd!

Last week the Lady Caps golfers were at Hedingham trying to follow-up their previous weeks' victory.  The Caps were led once again by Katie Brown's 45, 7th overall.  Rachel Lea's 46 and Lily Kate Tollison's 48 were good for  9th and 10th respectively.  Caroline Shook played well in her first match of the year and Caroline Zevenhuizen was the only Broughton player who was able to  improve on last week's match.

The real story of the day was Heritage's Rhea Bhatia's 37 for medalist honors and her teammate Kendra Dalton who shot second best 39.  With those great scores, Heritage finished at 123; 15 strokes ahead of 2nd place Wake Forest-Rolesville's 138.  The Capitals' 139 earned 3rd place.  This was 9 strokes higher than week one's match at North Ridge.

This week, the Lady Caps went to Wildwood Green with a goal to improve.  Katie Brown did just that shooting a team best 41 and finishing 5th overall.  Rachel Leas's 48 allowed her to finish 11th overall and Ellen Shook continued to play great shooting a 51.  Lily Kate Tollison accused some of her balls of playing hide and seek.  Lizzie Tollison played her first high school match and did great.

Like last week, Heritage's duo of Bhatia and Dalton dominated play with a 38 and 37 respectively.  That awas enough for Heritage to finish first with a score of 128.  Wakefield's 133 was 9 strokes better than their best score this season to finish second.  Wake Forest-Rolesville and Broughton tied for third with 141.

After three matches, Heritage has taken the conference lead with an average of 127.7.  The Lady Capitals are currently in second with a 136.7 average and Wakefield is third at 140.0.  Next Monday, we'll go to Heritage to try to get better and have fun!

Broughton XC defeats Leesville with Madeline there to cheer!

Broughton took on the Leesville Pride on Wednesday and the Capitals came away with two near perfect scores (15 points is a perfect score, girls scored 17 - boys 19).
This was a great meet to show the depth of our teams and talent of some of our young runners as we held out several varsity  athletes as they prepare for the fast approaching  championship part to our season. The girls were led by sophomore Ayla Gizlice and the boys were led by a trio of  young and talented runners:  Jeremy Brown, Peter  Millsaps, and William Sandin. The afternoon events were made even brighter by having team member Madeline Crone on the sidelines cheering everyone to the finish line.
 -    Coach Christian

In the photo of Addison, Mary Campbell, Lee Anna and Madeline, you can see the wristband Lee Anna is wearing - her arm around Madeline.  Those were distributed by Broughton Athletics in honor of Madeline, Janie, Tessa and Grace's continued recovery and many of our athletes were wearing them during the race.
Also,  Leesville's XC Coach Chants presented Coach Christian with letters bearing encouragement to the girls.  Our heartfelt  thanks  to them.

JV Girls Volleyball

The JV Girls volleyball squad, led by coach Enid Badillo, continued their season with some great action.

On August 27th, the team lost in a super effort to Holly Springs, Game 1: BHS 14/HSH 25- Game 2:  BHS 25/HSH 18: Game 3 BHS 21/HSH 25.

The very next day, the squad travelled to Wakefield, again losing a very tight match.  Game 1 BHS 25/WHS 21.  Game 2 BHS 19/WHS 25.  Game 3 BHS 22(?)/ WHS 25.  Sorry about the question mark on the score, but the blogger forgot to write that one down!

On August 30th, the Caps played the third match of the week and scored a victory in a tight game against rival Sanderson.  Broughton lost the first game 18 to 25, but rallied in the second to win 25/22.  The third game was really close, with the Caps scoring victory 25/23.

Following the Labor Day break, the Caps were back in action yesterday against Millbrook.  The team took victory in game one but had to rally from behind to win in extra points 28/26.  Game 2 was also close, but the Caps pulled through to win in straight games 25/23.

The team is showing some great improvement and the action is great, so come on out and support the Caps Volleyball program.
