The Caps will need the rest provided by Spring Break as they return to action on Monday, April 8th hosting Cap 8 #1 Millbrook at 6:30, and Cap 8 #3 Sanderson on Wednesday, April 10th.

Soccer: JV Women Win...Again!

The 1- 0 score does not reflect the JV ladies' domination of the pitch Monday.  Oh, and yeah, it was FREEZING.   The cold facts are that Carly Black's precise corner kick again found a mark that Dakota Zuehlke could translate to a game-winning goal.   Lindsay Southerland kept her house secure the entire game, with quick, solid defense from Carson Taylor, Lily Highsmith and Maggie Hamilton.   We hope Coach Estes has defrosted by now, as we head to Wakefield Wednesday!

Lady CapsLax Rally Not Enough to Hold Off Wakefield

The Varsity Women's Lacrosse team got off to a quick start with a goal scored by Kelsey Dupere in the first minute of play. Wakefield came back with numerous answers, outscoring Broughton 11-6 in the first half. Despite the frigid, damp and slick conditions, the Lady Caps, fought back with passion in the second half and held the Wolverines to 7 goals.  The most bizarre event of the evening came with 19 minutes left on the game clock. The Wakefield goalie was charged with a penaty for wrapping up Madeline Crone in her stick, eliminating the goalie from further play for the evening.  The penalty shot was then taken and scored by Crone on an empty net.  There was a barrage of yellow cards on both sides in the second half. Broughton kept bringing their game, even scoring a last second shot to end the evening:  Wakefield 18--Broughton 15.  Other stats:  Kelsey Dupere-6 goals/ 1 assist; Madeline Crone-5 goals/ 1 shot off frame; Sydney Frye-3 goals; Sara Joyner-1 goal; Olivia Joyner (G)-4 saves.

Softball Season Off to Slow Start, Home Opener Friday

Wendell -  Thursday, March 14th the Caps came away from a visit to East Wake High with a 9 to 1 loss in 6 ½ innings.  An injury riddled varsity squad scattered eight hits while leaving 10 runners on base against the Warriors.  Sophomore pitcher English Dean pitched a second consecutive complete game, giving up seven hits, with four strikeouts and issuing one walk.  The offense showed some signs of life with senior Garett Hedgepeth leading off with a double in the 2nd, while Dean also reached base on a one out double in the 3rd.  The Caps finally scored in the top of the 7th.  Following a leadoff single by junior catcher Shannon Denny, senior second baseman Morgan Buonpane rocked an RBI double for the Caps only run of the game.

On Wednesday the varsity Caps fell at Millbrook High, 19-6 in 4 ½ innings, with the Wildcats setting the tone early on a leadoff, inside-the-park homer.  Scoring for the Caps were Denny and Hedgepeth (1st), Dean (2nd), while Hedgepeth, senior Cole Bellamy, and senior Val Guzzo all scored in the top of the 5th.

Swingin' In The Wind

Men's Golf hosted the Cap8 at home this afternoon at Carolina Country Club. The CCC course is always imposing - with it's daunting hills and speedy greens - but in high winds it can become truly challenging. The Caps rose to the occasion - staying under par as a team for a six stroke win over their nearest competitor - Leesville. The combo of Kirkland Caison, Preyer Fountain, Will Minton, Harrison Rhoades, Stephen Saleeby and Court Settle have found their stride - they take their talent on the road to Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford on Friday and Saturday - to compete in the North State High School Challenge - against teams from across the state.

“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.” Arnold Palmer

Men's Golf Split Non-Con Openers

The Caps opened their season in tough conditions - spring has not sprung - so the windy and cold weather reigned in back-to-back non-conference matches.
Fielding their top six - the Caps brought home a win on Thursday in a challenge match against a seasoned Durham Riverside team at Croasdaile Country Club.
On Friday - the Caps traveled to the Keith Hills High School Kickoff in Buies Creek, NC. The tournament is played on both the Orange and Black courses - featuring some of the top men's golf teams from last year's state high school championships. Nevertheless - the Caps just couldn't come away with the win - in the end holding on for a third place finish.
The first few weeks of this Men's Golf season are packed with conference and non-conference matches - tomorrow they travel down the road for their first Cap8 Conference match of the season at the always rigorous North Ridge golf course.
Shake the winter chill off your clubs Caps and go show the Conference why you are the defending State Champions!

Never let up. The more you can win by, the more doubts you put in the other players' minds the next time out.
