Softball Scares Garner in Season Opener

Garner-  Monday, March 4th marked the 2013 season opener for Caps Softball as the varsity paid a visit to perennial powerhouse Garner Trojans in a non-conference matchup.  After a slow start over the first three innings, the Caps offense warmed up with five hits in the top of the fourth.  Scoring for the Caps were senior shortstop Katie Munger and sophomore pitcher English Dean, with additional hits by junior catcher Shannon Denny, senior third baseman Garett Hedgepeth, and senior left fielder Val Guzzo.  Rounding out the Caps defense for the opener: sophomore centerfielder Marisa Buonpane, senior first baseman Maggie Carraway, and junior right fielder Rae Harris.

The Trojans tied the score 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth.  Following a leadoff walk, Caps senior second baseman Morgan Buonpane added a go ahead run in the top of the fifth.

Carrying the lead into the bottom of the sixth after a three-up, three-down top half for the Caps, the Trojans loaded the bases, eventually tying the game following a controversial force play at the plate, with the home plate umpire ruling the Garner runner safe.  Garner added three more runs in the inning to make final score:  Caps 3, Trojans 6.
