CAPS GIVE VALIANT EFFORT IN DEFEAT

The Broughton Caps women's soccer team traveled to Wakefield Monday night for the first round of the Cap 8 tournament.  The Caps entered the match with five players out due to injuries.  The Caps and Wolverines split their two matches this season.

The game began, as it ended, with very physical play from Wakefield.  However, the Caps got on the scoreboard first in the 26' when Allie Cutler collected a Caroline Brown corner kick and served it into the box where Sarah Grace Lasso connected for her 9th goal of the season.  The Wolverines continued to claw at the Caps and Madison Lennox scored the equalizer in the 36' to send the game to 1-1 at halftime.

The second half saw no goals, but yellow cards issued to Allison Gupton and Wakefield's Lennox, who battled each other all night.  In the first 10' overtime period Wakefield notched a go-ahead goal in the 95'.  The Caps fought on and Cutler found the back of the net with the equalizer with 31.8 seconds left in the second 10' overtime period with an assist from Caroline Brown.  The team's battled through the first 5' "golden goal" overtime period without a winner.  Late in the second 5' "golden goal" overtime period, the Caps were signaled to have scored the game winner on a corner kick; however, the center referee, after consulting with the assistant referee, called a handball on the Caps and called the goal back.  With 2.2 seconds left the Wolverines scored the winner.

A valiant effort by the Caps with 110' of physical soccer.  Wakefield advances to face Cap 8 regular season champion Millbrook tonight at Heritage High.  The Caps await their first round game in the NCHSAA 4A state tournament, which begins May 8th.

BROWN STRIKES FOR CAPS' WIN

Broughton women's soccer team traveled to Heritage on Wednesday evening for the last regular season Cap 8 match.  The first half saw a "battle royale" as the Caps and the physical Huskies played to a nil-nil score at halftime.  The second half saw much of the same from Heritage who celebrated Senior Night at halftime.  However, as the full moon rose over the pitch, Senior Captain Caroline Brown found the back of the net on a beautiful 36 yard free kick strike to put the Caps up 1-0.  The Caps managed a few other chances with a header from Sarah Grace Lasso off a corner kick deflecting off the cross bar, and Emma Willard arguably due a penalty kick after being grabbed from behind and pulled down in the box in the last minute off action.  The Caps finish the conference regular season 7-7 and tied for fourth place with Wakefield.  They improve on the campaign to 9-8 and travel out of conference tonight to Holly Springs for a 6:30 kick-off.  Broughton opens the Cap 8 tournament Monday night against Wakefield, location to be determined.

Resolute in their Final Rounds

When the Caps left for Spring Break they had just dropped a match to Leesville by one stroke on Tuesday, March 26th at Hasentree…needless to say they returned this week on a determined note. Led by Will Minton – who put up a scorching 35 to lead the entire field and take medalist honors – Caps Men’s Golf was back in action at Wakefield this week. The TPC Wakefield Plantation course is one of the toughest tracks in the area. The coaches have been saying all season that difficult courses favor the depth of this team, and you could take that to the bank on Tuesday, as the Caps brought home another conference win. Stephen Saleeby and Harrison Rhoades both put up 36’s followed by 37’s from Preyer Fountain and Court Settle. Knowing this kind of consistency is the key to their success the Caps head into next Tuesday’s final conference match with the outright conference title in their sights and the tenacious perseverance of men on a mission. Go Caps!
*On a side note – it’s the most wonderful time of the year….The Masters. Play begins today and former Broughton Golfer, reigning US Open champion - Webb Simpson teed off today in the opening round at 9:39am – follow along at: masters.com

CAPS WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN A TALE OF TWO HALVES

The Caps women's soccer team came out inspired Wednesday evening before the best home crowd of the season against arch-rival Sanderson.  Broughton dominated the first half and took the lead 2-0 with goals by senior Lena Wallace in the 24' and 27'.  The Spartans took back a goal with 1' left in the first half off a free kick into the 18 yard box.  Halftime killed the Caps momentum as the Spartans came out with two quick goals off free kicks following Caps' fouls.  Broughton fought hard the remainder of the second half but could not get the equalizer to send the match to overtime.  The Caps fall to 5-7, 4-6 in Cap 8 play.  Unfortunately for Broughton, Wakefield won last night and took over 4th place in the conference.  The Caps travel outside of the Cap 8 and outside of Wake County tonight for a 6:30 match at the Clayton Comets.  Broughton returns to Cap 8 play Monday evening at Leesville.

Bialkowski Throws 3 Hit Shutout

Caps picked up right where they left off before spring break. Bialkowski had not seen action in 2.5 weeks, but his performance was quite impressive -just 2 walks and 8Ks in a complete game shutout. Sr. Wilson White reached base on all 4 at bats and Sr. Maclin Batchelor drove in 2 Runs. The at bats certainly improved throughout the game.

Coach Jones commented, " The energy was very good and very positive. I saw some impressive things, like field presence and moxie. That has always been there, but tended to be shy. There were offensive contributions throughout the lineup. Everyone was on the same page. This shows real progress for the team and the program."

Leading Hitters; Case (2-3 2B), Batchelor (2-4 2B, 2RBI), White (3-3 R)

Rude Welcome Back From Spring Break for Caps Soccer

The Broughton women's soccer team started the final academic quarter of the year off with a hard fought 2-1 defeat at the hands, or feet, that is, of the Cap 8 leading Millbrook Wildcats.  The teams both fought hard the first 40 minutes of the match and went into the half tied at 0.  Freshman Paige Griffiths opened the scoring in the game for Millbrook 6' into the second half.  19 minutes later the Wildcats added to their lead on a goal by Colleen Markey.  The Caps pressured the opponents for the remainder of the second half and Sarah Grace Lasso tallied her 6th goal of the season when the Millbrook goalkeeper coughed up a back pass from one of the Wildcat defenders.  Lasso nearly tied the game with a strike from beyond the 18 yard box that struck the post of the goal.  The Caps fall to 5-6 on the season and 4-5 in Cap 8 play.  They return to the home pitch at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday for a re-match with the Sanderson Spartans.

Baseball: Caps go 1-2 in Tournament

Results
(L) Broughton 2- Athens Drive 7
(W) Broughton 4- Ragsdale HS 3 (11 Innings)
(L) Broughton 3- Southeast Guilford 4

Coach Jones "Our play was very uneven. We just weren't sharp coming off the break and rain out for Friday's game against Athens. We made some difficult plays under pressure and got some good pitching (Walker and Kriegsman) in the extra inning win against Ragsdale. Then we were sluggish again for game 3. The bats never really got back from Spring Break. We will go back to work today and be better for the stretch coming up."

Record Overall (8-4) Conference (5-0)
