SEASON NOTES FROM COACH JONES:
WE INCREASED RUNS SCORED BY 43%, HITS BY 30%, EXTRA BASE HITS BY 40 %. WE DECREASED OUR ERRORS BY 44% AND CUT OUR ERA FROM 4.2 TO 2.58. WE WENT INTO THE LAST PLAYING DATE WITH A CHANCE TO SHARE THE LEAGUE TITLE. THAT SURPASSED MOST OF THE GOALS WE SET AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. WE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PERFORM WITH CONSISTENCY, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE COMPETITION IS TOUGH. WE FELL SHORT ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE A LITTLE BETTER EXECUTION COULD HAVE MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE. BUT IT WAS A GREAT GROUP OF YOUNG MEN AND A BIG TURN-AROUND FOR THE PROGRAM.
SUMMER:
WE WILL FIELD 2 TEAMS IN CCSSL (THE HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER LEAGUE), PLAYING 3 GAMES A WEEK UNTIL LATE JULY. THE OLDER SQUAD WILL INCLUDE VARSITY CANDIDATES FOR 2014; THE YOUNGER SQUAD WILL BE COMPOSED OF INCOMING 9TH GRADERS AND RETURNING JV PLAYERS.

Men's Golf Season Comes to a Close
The 2013 Men's Golf Season officially wrapped up last night at the Spring Sports Banquet. After winning both the Cap8 Conference title and the Regional title for the second year in a row - the Caps couldn't close it out with a win at States - coming in 4th by a margin. Not to sound like a broken record but North Carolina is ranked by Golfweek as the second most competitive state for boys' junior golf in the nation - that certainly proved true at the NCHSAA 4A State Championships last week. After a less than stellar first round - the Caps rallied for the most part but just couldn't come away with the repeat. However, all starters return for the 2014 season after spending the summer and fall competing on the national stage as individuals....so....next season promises to be fantastic to say the least!
Last night at the banquet Will Minton was awarded the MVP award for his outstanding play throughout the season and Harrison Rhoades was given the 4Star Coaches award recognizing excellence in Character, Leadership, Sportsmanship and Teamwork.
And last but not least - Coaches Marlowe, Smith and Elsaesser cannot be thanked and praised enough for their tireless dedication and work with this team - what a gift for these young men to have their guidance and leadership.

Caps Finish Soccer Season
The Broughton Caps women's soccer team ended the 2013 campaign with a 1-0 loss in the first round of the 4A state tournament at Durham Jordan. The Caps fought hard against a very talented Falcons team that finished tied for first in Pac 6 play. Senior Caroline Duncan was this blogger's "woman of the match" as she made save after save keeping the Caps in the game. The Caps lost an opportunity to tie the game in the first half when Sarah Grace Lasso was clearly tripped by the last Jordan defender between her and the goalkeeper, but no whistle was blown by the referee. Lasso also came close in the second half with a header off a corner kick that struck the cross bar and caromed off. The Caps finished the season 9-10-1 and look forward to 2014 with an experienced team returning. Thanks to seniors Carolina Brown, Caroline Duncan, Lena Wallace, Sofie Stein-Montalvo, Becca Shavlik, and Margot Provencher for their contributions to Broughton the past four years!
