Soccer: Caps tie Panther Creek in Home Opener

The men's varsity soccer team started the 2013 season in dramatic fashion, playing Panther Creek to a 2-2 draw in an overtime game in the home opener.

Broughton's Yusef Mohamud scored the game's first goal, heading in a missed shot by Wilbur Gazga just three minutes into the game. Panther Creek evened the score, 1-1, with a goal with just six minutes left in the first half.
Panther Creek scored quickly to open the second half, taking a 2-1 lead. But Gazga tied the score, 2-2, midway through the second half off of an assist from Jack Krueger.

Both teams had several opportunities for the winning goal in the non-conference game, with the Caps hitting the goal posts on a few shots. Broughton keeper Frankie Stallings blocked several shots as the clock wound down toward the end of regulation.

Gazga nearly scored again within seconds of the start of the first 10-minute overtime period. The back-and-forth game continued, with Stallings making another good save on a free kick by Panther Creek just outside the penalty box. The Caps' Rosendo Sierra-Flores nearly scored the winning goal with just 15 seconds left in the first overtime period.

Keeper Trey Morton, who played the first half, returned to the game for the second 10-minute overtime period, and worked with defenders Ben Youngblood, Brooks Nichols, Hyu A and Krueger to preserve the tie.

Prior to the varsity game, the junior varsity lost 2-1 to Panther Creek.
