Soccer: Caps Can't Overcome First-Half Flurry

Broughton took the game to Leesville for most of the second half Thursday night, but three goals by Leesville in the first half were too much to overcome as the Caps lost 1-3.

Leesville scored two goals within the first six minutes of the away game, then added a third goal off a corner kick with about nine minutes left in the first period. The Caps' Wilbur Gazga and Ike Drooz hit shots that just missed wide or high, while keeper Frankie Stallings made a great save midway through the first period and Jack Krueger saved a goal when he blocked a Leesville shot just inside the post.

The Caps were on the attack as the second half began, with Chris Vlahoplus scoring his second goal of the year within the first 30 seconds. Matt Brickhouse assisted on the goal.

Keeper Trey Morton and defenders Brooks Nichols, Moe Matheka (in his first game of the season), David Ridgeway and Krueger held Leesville scoreless in the second half. Broughton had several shots that were just wide or high, and Vlahoplus hit the post on one shot.

Earlier, the Broughton junior varsity lost 2-4. Will Richards and Luis Cisneros-Gazga scored for the Caps, while keeper Edgar Romero blocked a Leesville penalty kick in the second half.
