Soccer: Caps Roll Over Wakefield, 4-2

Wakefield struck first, scoring less than three minutes into the game Monday night, but Broughton roared back for a 4-2 conference win on its home field.

The Caps' Wilbur Gazga tied the score, 1-1, midway through the first half when he fired a shot past the Wakefield keeper. Chris Vlahoplus assisted on the goal. About seven minutes later, Broughton's Daniel Wiggins finished a 2-on-1 break for the Caps when he flicked a pass from Yusef Mohamud into the back of the net.

Broughton took a 3-1 lead into halftime after Ike Drooz placed a free kick into the upper corner of the goal with about 10 minutes left in the first half.

Both teams missed on scoring opportunities in the second half before Wakefield scored off a cross on a free kick from just outside the box, giving Broughton a slim 3-2 lead with about 17 minutes left to play.

But Vlahoplus quickly scored with a nice shot from outside the box, giving the Caps an insurmountable 4-2 lead for their second conference win. Keeper Frankie Stallings and defender Ben Youngblood made good saves late in the game to hold off Wakefield.

Thanks to members of the women's varsity volleyball team, which is undefeated in conference play, for turning out to support the soccer team.

Earlier, the junior varsity lost 1-3 to Wakefield. The Caps' lone goal was scored by Sheenaymu "C" Gay.
