Soccer: Caps Score Late to Defeat Wake Forest

A last-minute goal by Matt Brickhouse propelled Broughton to a dramatic 2-1 home victory Tuesday night over Wake Forest in the opening game of the Cap-8 Conference season.

Several former Caps soccer players were in attendance for the annual Alumni Night, and they were treated to a tense back-and-forth game that saw players from both teams draw yellow cards, fouls and offside calls.

Broughton’s Ike Drooz and Brickhouse both nearly scored in the first half, which ended in a 0-0 tie. After the Broughton alumni were recognized at halftime, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead when they converted a penalty kick caused by a Broughton handball in the box. Midway through the second half, though, Broughton’s Chris Vlahoplus made a strong run down the right side to score and tie the game.

Wake Forest nearly went ahead with two minutes left in the game, but Broughton keeper Frankie Stallings made a leaping save on a corner kick to keep the score tied at 1-1.

Then, with less than 30 seconds remaining, the Caps’ Rosendo Sierra-Flores passed ahead to Brickhouse, who challenged the Wake Forest keeper before sliding the ball into the goal from the left side to give Broughton a 2-1 lead.

Earlier, the junior varsity team defeated Wake Forest, 6-1, on goals from six different players – Luis Cisneros-Gazga, Graham Gunter, Doug Scott, Will Conger, Jesse Dean and Joe Ruslander.
