Soccer: Broughton Suffers Last-Second Loss

The inability to convert scoring opportunities cost Broughton Wednesday night, as Heritage scored with five seconds to play to pull out a 1-2 win over the Caps in the final game of the Cap 8 regular season.

It was Senior Night for the Caps, with the team's nine seniors and their families recognized during a halftime ceremony. But the seniors looked to make their mark from the game's beginning, controlling possession and aggressively attacking the Heritage goal.

Senior Yusef Mohamud almost struck first, hitting the cross bar on a shot less than a minute into the game. Broughton was unable to convert a handful of corner kicks and barely missed on several shots, including one by senior Wilbur Gazga that nicked the post as it skipped wide left midway through the first half.

Heritage came out more aggressively in the second half, and struck with the game's first goal about four minutes into the half. But the Caps fought back, with senior Ben Youngblood hitting an arcing shot from 40 yards out that dropped into the goal over the outstretched hands of the Heritage keeper to tie the score at 1-1.

But then, Heritage converted a corner kick with just five seconds remaining in the game to make the final score 1-2.

Earlier, the junior varsity team won 2-0 over Heritage. The Caps' Joe Ruslander scored off of an assist by Doug Scott, and Cameron Champion scored off of an assist by Bryant O'Neal. Benjamin McCord and Edgar Romero combined in goal for the shutout.

The Caps will return to action Monday night in the conference tournament. By finishing in the top half of the league standings, Broughton earned the right to play at home in the first round on Monday. Come out and support the Caps as they look to make a good run in the postseason.

But before we turn our attention to the postseason, we want to give another shout out to the team's seniors and their families: Doh Gay, Wilbur Gazga, Moe Matheka, Yusef Mohamud, Wyatt Moore, Brooks Nichols, Rosendo Sierra-Flores, Daniel Wiggins and Ben Youngblood. Go Caps!
