Soccer: Caps Win in First Round of Playoffs

Broughton, led by two goals by Matt Brickhouse, scored a 3-1 road win at Greenville's J.H. Rose High School Wednesday night to advance to the second round of the state playoffs.

The Caps were the aggressors from the outset, missing on several shots and corner kicks as they kept the ball in the Rose half of the field for most of the first 15 minutes of the game. Then, nearly midway through the first half, Brickhouse nudged the ball into the goal after the Caps' Ike Drooz headed a cross from Wilbur Gazga to the edge of the goal.

Rose tied the game nine minutes later on a header off a free kick. The first half ended in a 1-1 tie.

Broughton was on the attack quickly as the second half began, with Doh Gay scoring less than three minutes into the half off a pass by Gazga to put the Caps up 2-1.

The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the second half, with Broughton keeper Frankie Stallings making a nice save with about 12 minutes left in the game. Broughton finally put the game out of reach with about seven minutes left when Brickhouse scored his second goal of the game off of an assist by Sheenaymu "C" Gay

The Caps will face Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, the number two seed in the eastern half of the state playoff brackets, in the second round.
