Broughton Men's Tennis Team was defeated by NC state defending champions, Millbrook High School. The Caps lost 7-2.  There were a couple of outstanding matches for the Caps.  Taylor Boole, junior, defeated John Karlawish in a 3 setter.  This was a huge win for Boole as Karlawish is a USTA Southern ranked top 21 player and a 5 star recruit!  Patrick Bryant, senior, won in straight sets over Millbrook's Creech at the no. 4 spot.  The Caps will be playing a lot of tennis after spring break, so come see some of the best tennis in the state!

CAPS FALL TO #5 HOGGARD IN NON-CONFERENCE MATCH
Broughton's women's soccer team dropped a non-conference match Thursday night to fifth ranked J.T. Hoggard High School from Wilmington 4-1.  The Vikings (7-0-2) came out fast and physical, receiving several cautions from the referee before he finally showed the yellow card after an aggressive foul.  The Caps looked shaken and could not find an offensive rhythm on the night.  Senior Captain Allison Gupton opened her account for the season scoring the Caps lone goal in the second half with a strong volley just beyond the 18 yard box.  The Caps get the week off for Spring Break and return to action Monday, April 7th when they welcome Cap 8 leader Millbrook High School.  Come out and support the Caps (3-3, 2-2 Cap 8) and let's make it a rude welcome for the Wildcats!

CapsLax Stuff the Spartans

The men's varsity Caps lax team dispensed the Sanderson Spartans quickly and rolled to a 18-1 win. The Spartan's, in the second year of their program, were no match for the more experienced Capitals. The Caps jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter and a 15-1 lead at the half before putting on the brakes in the second half. Senior Drew Hinton won 9 out of 12 faceoffs, helping the Caps maintain time of possession. Junior Captain Zach Burgess led all scorers with 5 goals, all in the first half. Senior Captain Davis Weaver and Junior Walker Rice added 3 goals each. Senior Max Hardin, Juniors Hayden Lovett, Graison Self, Hunter Keravuori, Sophomores Mitchell Snyder, Austin Bell, and Makie Michaux added 1 goal each to round out the scoring. The Capslax team is off for Spring Break and will return with 3 games during the week of April 7th.
CAPS GETS BACK TO WINNING WITH 1-0 VICTORY OVER ENLOE
The Broughton women's soccer team returned to the home pitch Wednesday evening for a Cap 8 fixture against the Eagles from Enloe High School.  The Caps were coming off a humbling defeat Monday at the feet of Wakefield High School.  The Caps dominated possession in the first half and sophomore Sarah Grace Lasso provided a little excitement with two shots on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net.  Sophomore Kelly Ann Evans was thought to have opened the scoring for the Caps in the 51st minute, but her goal was called back due to an offside call.  One minute later sophomore Emma Willard tried to open the scoring for Broughton, but her shot caromed off the near side goal post.  The Caps kept pressing and in the 56th minute sophomore midfielder Lily Schneider slotted a quality pass to a streaking Willard who beat the goal keeper and put Broughton on the scoreboard.  Willard's goal would conclude the scoring on the night as Enloe fought hard to keep the ball out of the net and find an equalizer, but were denied by junior 'keeper Allie Cutler and the Caps' defense.  Broughton's record is now 3-2 and 2-2 in Cap 8 play.  The Caps return to action tonight when 5th ranked J. T. Hoggard High School from Wilmington (6-0-2)comes to town to test the Caps and the Cap 8's metal.  There will not be a JV game and the varsity game kicks off at 6:30.

Men's Golf Takes Their Show On the Road

Men's Golf has been busy. Friday, March 21st and Saturday March 22nd Broughton traveled to Sanford, NC to compete in the North State High School Challenge against 11 of the best high school teams in the state at Carolina Trace Country Club taking second place to Myers Park of Charlotte by 5 strokes. Play of note for the weekend - Preyer Fountain scored his first hole-in-one on the par 3 eighth hole on Friday finishing the weekend tied for second - Will Minton, Harrison Rhoades and Court Settle all tied for 11th out of a field of 71 players. This was a great warm up for the matches ahead - the NCHSAA 4A State Championship will be contested at Carolina Trace this year and the Caps certainly mean to give it everything they have to make sure they get themselves back to Sanford to play for that State Trophy.

On Monday, March 24th....just so their clubs didn't get dusty....the Caps headed to Charlotte for the Carmel Invitational - quite an honor as only two teams from the east were invited to participate in this tournament at Carmel Country Club - one of the most beautiful courses in the state. Broughton took second place again - this time to private school Forsyth Country Day from Winston-Salem, NC. A man down with Will Minton in the clubhouse under the weather - the Caps poured it on - Preyer Fountain and Court Settle each finished the day at even par firing 72's and Harrison Rhoades shot a 75.

Tomorrow - Thursday, March 27th - Men's Golf is back in action against the CAP8 at Hedingham Golf Club in Raleigh, NC. Come see these guys play - they are fun to watch!

CAPS DROP HOME OPENER TO WOLVERINES 4-0
The Broughton women's soccer home opener against Wakefield High School did not go as planned.  Thanks to a "hat trick" by Wolverines senior and Duke recruit Kat McDonald, the Caps dropped the match 4-0.  Broughton, who had four varsity players on a school trip to New York City for the rescheduled game at Sanderson last Thursday which the Caps lost 3-0, had those players back, but struggled for the entire 80 minutes against a veteran Wakefield side.  Sophomore Emma Willard provided some excitement for the supporters with several quality runs, but was not able to find the back of the net on the night.  The Caps drop to 2-2 and 1-2 in Cap 8 and will regroup for two more home fixtures this week when Enloe High School comes to Broughton Wednesday night and Hoggard High School travels up I-40 from Wilmington Thursday night.

CapsLax Roll Over Visitors from Maryland!

The Men's Varsity Caps Lax team hosted Walt Whitman High School from Bethesda MD on Saturday. The hospitality only extended so far. Junior Jack Williams, defense/long stick middie showed his athleticism with two sweet ground ball, clear, and score goals in the first half. The Caps went into halftime with a 4-1 lead. The defense of Williams, Junior Hayden Lovett, Junior Joey Moore, Senior Ben Rahn, and Sophomore Joseph Winstead did a good job of keeping Whitman's shots off cage. The Caps held off a Whitman rally and won 9-6. Senior goalie Paxton Massarelli anchored the defense with six saves. Senior Davis Weaver led the scoring with 3 goals and 1 assist. Jack Williams had 2 goals. Junior Zach Burgess added 1 goal and 3 assists. Senior Cameron Gilchrist, junior Walker Rice, and sophomore Mitchell Snyder had 1 goal each. On a beautiful early spring evening, the men's varsity lacrosse team avenged last years only conference loss by beating Millbrook 16-8 on Friday at Millbrook. Powered by Mitch Snyder's 3 first quarter goals, the Caps jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and 9-3 lead at the half. Leading the scoring was Senior Davis Weaver with 4 goals and 2 assists and Sophomore Mitch Snyder with 4 goals. Juniors Zach Burgess, Walker Rice, and Troy Jones had 2 goals and 1 assist each. The CapsLax have a quick turnaround and host their first home game Saturday at 2:00 vs. Walt Whitman High out of Bethesda, MD.

JV Soccer Posts Dramatic Win!

The JV Lady Caps Soccer team traveled to Sanderson Thursday and extended their winning streak in a very dramatic fashion. After playing 89 minutes with no goals for either side, freshman Mckenzie Dubois fired a shot off of the cross bar which rebounded eight yards out.  Lily Highsmith was able to reach the ball first and place a low shot to the far corner of the net with 10 seconds remaining in the match.

The Caps were missing their coach and four starters, 3 were pulled up to play with the varsity and 1 is injured, but managed a handful of shots on goal and were able to control the majority of play.  The defense played solidly, only allowing two or three scoring chances for Sanderson.

This is the fourth win for the undefeated Caps!  Their next match is scheduled at home on Monday, March 24 at 4:30pm.   Come out and support your Caps in their first home match.

Note:  If you'd like a roster of the team to take to the game, they are available to print on the Sports Blog under the soccer tab at the top of the page.  Or you can pull it up on your smartphone if you don't want to print it.

WEATHER WINS AGAIN!
The women's soccer game at #2 ranked Leesville Road High School was postponed with 8:39 left in the first half.  The Caps came out strong and their determination to prove the naysayers wrong showed.  The attack was aggressive and the defensive line held under intermittent pressure from College of Charleston signee Mary Kate Bowers.  The game was stopped with 15:04 in the first half when the "line" of the thunderstorm roared through (the "O'Fishel forecast was actually right).  After a short break, play resumed, but due to increasing rain the officials proposed a postponement.  The reschedule date has not been determined.

Men's Golf Comes Out Swinging

After the first two matches of the season were postponed due to the never-ending winter weather, the Caps were finally able to begin their season on Monday at North Ridge Country Club. The weather was good and so were the scores - Stephen Saleeby and Preyer Fountain finished at one under par for the day with 35's and Will Minton came in at even par. The Caps had a team total of one under to win by two shots over Millbrook.
On Tuesday the Caps hosted the Cap8 at home at CCC and that day brought even better weather.....and even better scores. Harrison Rhoades came in at par, Will Minton and Stephen Saleeby shot one under par 34's and Preyer Fountain was the medalist for the day with a three under par 32. The men finished with a team total of five under for the day and a comfortable lead in the CAP8 to begin the season.
They tee it up next at a non-conference match in Clayton at The Neuse Invitational on Friday, March 14th.

CAPS WOMEN'S SOCCER STARTS SEASON 2-0
Yesterday's beautiful early Spring weather meant the Caps women's soccer team was able to play a game, something it hadn't been able to do since February 27, 2014.  Broughton's women did not look rusty at all and came away from Trentini Stadium in Wake Forest with a 4-0 victory over the Cougars.  The Caps opened the contest aggressively and got on the scoreboard early when sophomore Kelly Ann Evans capitalized off a shot from Emma Willard that deflected off the goal post in the 10' to score her second goal of the season.  The attack continued when sophomore Sarah Grace Lasso collected her second goal of the campaign in the 16' when she one-touched a corner kick from Allison Gupton to put the Caps up 2-0.  As Wake Forest's frustration mounted, senior Annika Meulink found the back of the net in the 23', again taking advantage of Willard's second shot to deflect off the post for the night.  The Caps scored the final goal of the night in the 26' when senior Averill Payne scored off an assist from sophomore Julia Stevens.  The second half found the Caps playing a lot more defense with more exceptional play from junior 'keeper Allie Cutler, who earned her first clean sheet of the season.  Broughton returns to action, weather permitting, Wednesday night at Cap 8 rival #2 ranked Leesville Road High School (2-1-1).

Playing in cold, windy and wet conditions, the Caps varsity topped the Apex Cougars 5 - 3 on Thursday 3/6/14 at Wiley Warren Field.
