CapsLax Subdue Spartans Early

The men's Varsity lacrosse team unleashed some pent up frustration by beating the Sanderson Spartans 17-2. Lead by Zach Burgess' 7 goals on 7 shots, the Caps jumped out to a 9-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and a 13-0 score at the half. Back up goalie Ollie Webb stood in admirably for the injured Paxton Masserelli with 6 saves. Davis Weaver added 3 goals and 1 assist. Mitch Snyder had 3 goals. William Rice added 2 goals. Jimbo Dixon and Cameron Gilchrist scored 1 goal each. Gilchrist added 1 assist. Middies Walker Rice (4 assists), Austin Bell (3 assists), Troy Jones (2 assists), and Max Hardin (1 assist) showed some excellent passing, setting up their teammates for goals. Next up for the Caps is Senior Night on Friday at 7:00 when they host Wakefield.
CAPS RALLY TO BEAT EAGLES 5-2
The Broughton women's soccer team traveled down New Bern Avenue Monday night as Enloe High School welcomed the Caps on its Senior Night.  Unfortunately, while the Eagles made the fixture exciting in the first half, they could not sustain the excitement and fell to their ITB rivals.  Senior captain Allison Gupton opened the scoring for Broughton in the 4th minute.  She would continue her inspired play later in the half sending a corner kick into the box to sophomore Kelly Ann Evans who quickly slotted a short pass to sophomore Emma Willard who was waiting at the goal mouth and jammed it in to put the Caps up 2-0.  Enloe's excitement for the night would come in the waning minutes of the first half when it scored two almost identical goals off lobbed kicks from about 35 yards out that were just out of the reach of junior goal keeper Allie Cutler.  After the halftime, Broughton would come out firing.  In the 50th minute Evans would score off an assist from sophomore Julia Stevens.  In the 67th minute sophomore Sarah Grace Lasso would get on the tally sheet with a shot that deflected off the Eagles' defender.  Sophomore Daisy King is credited with the assist.  Finally, in the last minute of play, Willard would find the back of the net again off a pass by Annika Meulink to put the Caps up for good 5-2.  The Caps improve to 6-8-1 on the campaign.  Enloe dropped to 0-13.  Broughton returns home Wednesday night for Senior Night against the Heritage High School Huskies.

In the fourth, Zach Burgess and Davis Weaver each scored one goal and the defense held Leesville to 1 goal to end regulation in a tie at 9-9. The Wildcats clearly had more energy, jumping out to a 4-2 first quarter lead and a 6-4 halftime lead. Once again the Caps gave up 5 goals in the third quarter to fall behind 11-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Caps were unable to make up the deficit and lost the game 14-11. Zach Burgess led the Caps with 3 goals. Walker Rice had 2 goals and 2 assists. Davis Weaver and Troy Jones added 2 goals each. Mitch Snyder had 1 goal and 2 assists. Jimbo Dixon added 1 goal and 1 assist. William Rice had 1 assist. The one highlight of the game was Drew Hinton winning 18 out of 21 faceoffs. The state playoffs start Friday May 9.

On Tuesday, April 22nd, after their victory at Lonnie Poole Golf Course - the Caps knew they had clinched the Conference Championship....but on Thursday, April 24th the Caps showed up to Wildwood Green Golf Club to complete an undefeated CAP8 Conference season and collect their hardware.
Veteran players Harrison Rhoades and Court Settle led the team to victory - Rhoades firing a four under par 31 and Settle shooting a one under 34 - John Hogan shot a 36 and Jimbo Stanley shot a 38 to close out Broughton's scoring. And on Senior day - Kirkland Caison, John Hogan, Jack Nelms and Court Settle played the final conference match of their CAP8 careers - it was a special afternoon.
To further sweeten the day Preyer Fountain, Will Minton, Harrison Rhoades and Stephen Saleeby made All-Conference.
...And finishing the season as the number 1 golfer in the CAP8 Conference with the lowest scoring average in conference play - Preyer Fountain was named Player of the Year - the first Broughton golfer to earn that honor since Webb Simpson.

WOLVERINES BEST CAPS IN HARD FOUGHT CAP 8 GAME
The Wakefield High School Wolverines defeated the Caps in a hard fought Cap 8 women's soccer game last night at Wakefield.  The Caps opened the fixture with an advantage in possession of the soccer ball and the sophomore combination of Sarah Grace Lasso, Lily Schneider, Julia Stevens, and Emma Willard, and senior Allison Gupton were moving the ball into the Caps attacking third and creating chances for Broughton.  The air went out of the Caps momentum like an untied balloon shortly after several substitutions were made when the Wolverines struck in the 31st minute to go on top 1-0.  The Caps were slow to recover and although junior 'keeper Allie Cutler made a great save, Wakefield was able to convert a ball that was not cleared and went up 2-0 in the 32nd minute.  Broughton kept up the effort in the second half and sophomore Kelly Ann Evans "toe-poked" the Caps only goal of the night in the 71st minute after Willard gave a great effort in chasing down a ball just wide of the left side of the 18 yard box and took a shot on frame.  Final score 2-1 Wolverines.  The Caps return to action Monday night at Enloe High School.

CAPS DROP HOME MATCH TO SPARTANS
On Tuesday night rival Sanderson Spartans came to Broughton for a women's soccer match and went home with a 1-0 win.  The fixture was hard fought the entire night with junior Allison Gupton, and sophomores Emma Willard and Sarah Grace Lasso combining in the Caps attacking third and creating several scoring chances; however, the Caps were unable to finish.  Sanderson took it's lead in the 29th minute when sophomore Lily Schneider was called for a foul on a Spartan player inside the 18 yard box, setting up a penalty kick, which the Spartans converted.  Junior goal keeper Allie Cutler continued her exceptional play throughout the game as Sanderson continued to poke holes in the Caps defensive backline.  Broughton continued to fight in the second half and created scoring chances early in the second half followed by apparent absence in the attacking third.  The Caps drop to 5-7-1 and 3-6-1 in Cap 8 play.  They return to the pitch Thursday night at Wakefield High School.

CapsLax Win Round 1 in Tight Game against Leesville

Senior Davis Weaver scored the winning goal with 24 seconds left in the game to beat rival Leesville 8-7 Monday night. Weaver received the ball from Troy Jones on the right wing, drove to the goal, receiving a pick from Jones, to hit a top side goal from 12 yards out to get the score. Following the faceoff, Goalie Paxton Massarelli made a final save for his 12th of the game. The Caps jumped out to a 4-0 goal lead in the first quarter and a 6-2 lead at the half. In a tense, penalty laden game, the Pride took advantage of man up opportunities scoring 6 of their 7 goals while in man up. The Pride kept chipping away at the Caps lead to tie it up with just a few minutes left in the 4th quarter. Leading the scoring was William Rice with 3 goals. Zach Burgess added 2 goals and 3 assists. Davis Weaver had 2 goals and Austin Bell added 1 goal. Mitchell Snyder added 1 assist. CAPS DISARM TROJANS
The Broughton women's soccer team finished the week on a winning note after traveling to Garner Magnet Senior High School last night at coming back to Raleigh with a 2-0 result.  As expected the Trojans played a physical style of soccer and fielded several fast players in the attack.  However, the Caps, who appeared tired after efforts against Leesville Road and Millbrook this week, absorbed the Trojans efforts and the match was scoreless until the 36th minute when sophomore Sarah Grace Lasso slotted a pass from the right flank into sophomore Emma Willard's run down the middle and Willard finished for the 1-0 lead which the Caps would take into halftime.  Five minutes into the second half, Willard would re-pay Lasso by sending her a nice ball as she darted through the midfield and Lasso fired her the Caps second goal on the night.  Both sides fought hard for the remaining 35 minutes, with many Caps supporters questioning whether the center referee had forgotten to bring his caution card, as several Garner fouls looked to be bookable offenses.  The Caps endured and finished the non-conference fixture 2-0.  The Caps are 5-5-1 and return to action Monday at 4:30 at Leesville Road to complete the season's earlier game that was postponed due to weather.

Caps Lax Trounce the Trojans

The Men's' Varsity Lacrosse team defeated the Garner Trojans 18-0 on Thursday night at Caps Stadium, upping their record to 9-1 and 8-0 in the Cap 8. Leading the scoring were the first line attack of Davis Weaver, Zach Burgess, and William Rice with 4 goals each. Weaver and Burgess added 1 assist each. Also scoring 1 goal each were: Drew Hinton, Walker Rice, Troy Jones, Will Smith, Blake Holden, and Mitchell Snyder. Snider added 2 assists and Hayden Lovett, Walker Rice, Jack Williams, Will Smith, and Austin Bell added 1 assist each. Drew Hinton helped maintain time of possession by winning 9 out of 10 face-offs. A swarming defense kept the Trojans to only 1 shot on goal in the shutout. Next up is home and away series against the undefeated Leesville Pride next week on Monday and Wednesday. The home game is Monday night at 7:00. If you haven't been to a lacrosse game yet, this is the one to come to. The winner will likely win the Cap 8 conference title.

JV Soccer: Caps lose a close one!

The JV Lady Caps soccer team left Millbrook with a tough 1-0 loss.  Millbrook completely dominated play until they finally scored with 16 minutes remaining in the half.   That goal served as a wake up call to the Caps, who dominated the play the remainder of the game.   Although dominating play with many of corners and shots on goal, the Caps could not get the ball in to the net.

The Caps defense, led by goal keeper Kendall Stephenson, did a great job of shutting down the Wildcats after the lone goal.  The loss drops the Caps to (7-2-1) and the Millbrook rematch will come soon at Broughton.  Thursday afternoon the Caps travel to Garner for a 4:30pm match.
CAPS DROP CAP 8 CONTEST TO CONFERENCE LEADER MILLBROOK
Broughton's women's soccer team traveled to Cap 8 leading Millbrook High School Wednesday night for an important conference contest.  After 40 minutes of play neither side could find the back of the net, thanks to several spectacular saves by junior goal keeper Allie Cutler, and went into the halftime break knotted 0-0.  Much of the first half battle centered on control of the midfield.  The Caps brought a lot of energy into the second half and in the 50th minute, after an exhibition of "the beautiful game" in the attacking third, sophomore Lily Schneider collected her second goal of the season and put the Caps up 1-0.  The Wildcats continued to press the Caps defensive back line and found the equalizer in the 62nd minute.  The sides continued the hard-fought contest and in the 77th minute Millbrook found the old onion bag again putting them ahead 2-1, a score that would hold until the final whistle.  The Caps return to action tonight when they visit the non-conference Garner High School Trojans and look for a victory to conclude the week or for Scotty McCreery (Taste of Country website's "Sexiest Male in Country Music") to sing the National Anthem or bring Bojangles.

JV Soccer: Caps Tie Leesville

The Lady Caps JV Soccer team hosted a strong Leesville Road team Monday night and came away with a 0-0 tie.  Controlling the game in the first half, the Caps missed many nice scoring opportunities in part due to a very good keeper for Leesville.  Although the Caps had several close opportunities in the second half, they could never get it in the net.  The Caps defense played well the entire game with several nice saves by the keeper.  The Lady Caps record is 7-1-1 and play again Wednesday, 4:30pm at Millbrook.
PRIDE DEFEATS CAPS IN CAP 8 CONTEST
On Tuesday night the 8th ranked Leesville Road High School Pride visited Broughton for a women's Cap 8 soccer match.  Eight minutes into the contest the Pride showed why they are ranked when senior Mary Kate Bowers opened the scoring.  Bowers, who will play college soccer next year at the College of Charleston, was not finished and found the back of the net for her second goal on the night in the twenty-third minute.  The Pride took the 2-0 lead into halftime.  The Caps fought back hard in the second period and sophomore Daisy King scored her first goal of the season when she chested a Lily Schneider corner-kick past the Leesville 'keeper.  Unfortunately, Broughton could not Capitalize off the momentum from the goal and the Pride scored their third and final goal of the night in the seventy-sixth minute of play.  Broughton drops to 4-4-1 and 3-3-1 in the Cap 8 and travel to 13th ranked Millbrook High School Wednesday evening for another important conference contest with the Wildcats.

A Season Under Par

With only two CAP8 Conference Matches left in the season - it is safe to say Broughton Men's Golf is happy with their undefeated season so far. On Tuesday, April 8th they were back in action at TPC Wakefield - this Hale Irwin designed course is a daunting task to say the least, but the Caps were ready even after the layover of Spring Break 2014. Leading the charge was Preyer Fountain at 2 under with a 33, Will Minton followed with a 35 and Stephen Saleeby had a 37 to bring home an eight shot Broughton win.
On Thursday, April 10th the Caps headed to Heritage Golf Course in Wake Forest where they once again handily took a CAP8 conference win. Preyer Fountain was 2 under with a 34, Court Settle came in 1 under with a 35 and Will Minton and Stephen Saleeby each shot par for the day to give the Caps a 5 shot victory over their opponents.
On Monday, April 14th Broughton Men's Golf heads to Treyburn Country Club in Durham for the North Carolina High School Invitational - Court Settle, Will Minton, Stephen Saleeby, Harrison Rhoades, Preyer Fountain and Jimbo Stanley will be taking on some of the best golfers in the state - if you see them wish them luck and lots of drained putts!
"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."

CAPS DEFEAT COUGARS 3-0
The Broughton women's soccer team welcomed Wake Forest High School to Raleigh on a beautiful Spring evening and defeated the Cougars 3-0 giving junior goal keeper Allie Cutler her third clean sheet of the 2014 campaign.  The Caps opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a goal by sophomore Sarah Grace Lasso.  Lasso dribbled down the left side of the pitch, cut into the 18 yard box, and fired a shot into the back of the net.  The goal was Lasso's third of the season.  Broughton took the 1-0 lead into halftime.  Nine minutes into the second half the Caps scored their second goal on an own goal that was credited to sophomore Emma Willard.  Sophomore Lily Schneider placed a nice corner kick into the box near post that brushed Willard and deflected off the Wake Forest defender's back and into the goal.  The goal is Willard's fourth of the campaign.  Schneider was not finished scoring the Caps third goal on the night in the 79th minute of play - her first of the season off a well-placed corner kick by Senior Captain Allison Gupton.  The Caps are now 4-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Cap 8 play with huge games next week with Leesville Road at home Monday night and away to Millbrook Wednesday night and an out-of-conference contest at Garner Thursday night.

CAPS WOMEN DRAW WITH HUSKIES 1-1
Broughton women's soccer team returned from Spring Break and returned to the pitch Tuesday evening at host Heritage High School.  The Huskies were very physical from the opening whistle often grabbing and shoving Caps players throughout the match.  Sophomore Emma Willard opened the scoring her third goal of the 2014 campaign in the tenth minute.  Junior goalkeeper Allie Cutler, who recently committed to play soccer for the Furman Paladins, kept Heritage off the scoreboard with several athletic saves allowing the Caps to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.  Unfortunately, that would not last as the Huskies equalized two minutes into the second half.  The game continued to be physical, but neither side was able to find the game winner.  The teams continued the battle for two ten minute overtime periods much to the chagrin of several girls who had tickets to last night's Miley Cyrus concert, but could not put the ball into the old onion bag and the Cap 8 contest ended in a draw.  The Caps return to action Thursday night when they host Wake Forest High School at 4:30 and 6:30.
