Broughton Hosts Free Girls Basketball Camp

I'm excited to let you know that for the first time Broughton High School is going to have a girls only basketball camp!  We have to begin somewhere, so since this is our first time, it's only going to be a one-day "camp" on Saturday, July 12 from 9am until 3pm at Holliday gym. The camp will be for any girl in 3rd grade through 8th.

The other great news is that we're going to make this a free event! We'll limit it to no more than 50 participants, first-come, first-serve. Parents need to email me, brad@infocusjobs.com, or my wife, Sims.McCorkle@YMCATriangle.org, if they are interested.  Please spread the word to anyone you know that might want to send their daughter...especially if they're in a Broughton district ;)

The goals of the camp are:
  1. Have fun.
  2. Teach the girls the most basic fundamentals of basketball.
  3. Encourage youth participation in girls basketball.
With regards to the 3rd goal, nationally and locally there has been a drop off in participation in girls basketball, as other sports such as soccer surge.  Some local teams, even in our own conference, have not fielded JV squads in the last few years due to limited numbers. We want to encourage continued participation in this wonderful TEAM sport and ensure that it remains a GROWING part of our athletics program at BHS, as well as all schools in our region. Click here for an article about the decline in girls' high school basketball.  Let's change this trend!

Lastly, we need as many of our current and former players as possible to join us that day to help! Please speak to your daughter about this opportunity. If they are a current BHS student, we can arrange community service hours for their participation.

Thanks!
Coach Mac

CAPS CLOSE 2014 SEASON WITH LOSS
Broughton's women's soccer team traveled to Wilmington Wednesday evening for a NCHSAA 4A tournament first round contest against John T. Hoggard High School, the #3 seed in the East bracket.  The Caps fought hard with the Vikings in the first half even after conceding a goal in the 3rd minute of play. Unfortunately, the second half would not be as closely contested with Hoggard scoring again in the 46th, 49th (off a free kick from 25 yards out) and 75th minutes.  The Caps close the 2014 campaign at 8-9-1.

Broughton Men's Golf 2014 State Champions

It was an outstanding day - the play was tight and the nerves were palpable as the scores came in - but when all was said and done - the Caps brought home the 4A Men's Golf State Championship for the second time in three years and it was awesome!
Below I will list the links to the various news articles and the WNCN interview but here for a moment indulge me as I step beyond the fourth wall. I took on this BHS Men's Golf Blog in 2012 and this is my final post - it has been a privilege. These young men are not only exceptional golfers - but remarkable people and they will go far - most assuredly on the course - but more importantly as fine human beings and it is an honor to know them all.

CAPS WOMEN'S SOCCER QUALIFIES FOR 4A STATE TOURNAMENT
The Broughton women's soccer team has qualified for the 2014 NCHSAA 4A state soccer tournament and begins play Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at J. T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington.  The Caps (8-8-1) enter the tournament as the #30 seed in the East and thus, travel to the #3 seed Vikings (18-2-2).  The Caps look to avenge a 4-1 beat down by the Vikings at Broughton on April 24th.  Brougton has been in good form of late as they won their last two Cap 8 contests in hard-fought battles against Heritage and Millbrook, both of whom are seeded higher than the Caps in the tournament.  Go Caps!

Men's Golf 4A State Championship Day One

Day one of the Men's Golf State Championship is in the books and Broughton, the 2012 champion, is five shots ahead of defending champ Southern Pines Pinecrest. The championship is being contested on a par-72 layout set at 6,698 yards for the NCHSAA event - 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament yesterday at Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, NC and they will resume play this morning at 8am.
Preyer Fountain led the scoring for the Caps with a 71 - currently in second place behind (Cornelius, NC) Hough's Patrick Cover. Stephen Saleeby shot a 72, Will Minton fired a 73 and Harrison Rhoades and Court Settle each came in with 76.
A Wake County school has won the men’s 4-A team golf title 18 times in the last 28 years, including four of the last five, and the Caps have put themselves in a position to add to that total.
We're all cheering hard for you from Raleigh - Go low Caps, Go low - and go out there today and finish what you started - best of luck!

CAPS END REGULAR SEASON WITH VICTORY OVER #11 WILDCATS
The Broughton women's soccer team concluded its regular season with a hard-fought, well-deserved victory over 11th ranked Millbrook.  The Caps started the fixture strong and it was not long before sophomore Emma Willard found the back of the net in the 7th minute to put the Caps on top.  The Wildcats would not concede and kept firing shots from all angles at junior goalkeeper Allie Cutler.  The player of the game though would be the goal post, as it deflected two Millbrook efforts in the 18th and 27th minutes.  The battle continued in the second half with Cutler making a spectacular save of a near goal line shot in the 45th minute.  Cutler gave the Caps supporters a scare late in the second half when she slid for ball and a Millbrook player kicked her in the mouth.  The player received a yellow card for the foul, but may have deserved a red in this humble blogger's opinion.  Cutler's return only strengthened the Caps resolve and they carried the lead to the final whistle.  Broughton finishes the 2014 campaign 8-8-1, 6-7-1 in Cap 8 and awaits a decision on whether it will qualify for the NCHSAA 4-A tournament as the fifth team from Cap 8.

Dupere’s late goal seals Broughton’s 13-12 win over Wakefield in girls’ lacrosse

By David Justice Correspondent, News and Observer May 2, 2014 RALEIGH — The showdown for the Conference 3 girls’ lacrosse championship was everything it was supposed to be Friday night at Wakefield. Broughton turned to Kelsey Dupere for the winning goal and the senior center midfielder delivered with a shot just past Wolverines goalie Jessica Lynch with 12 seconds left to lift the Caps to a 13-12 win. Broughton (15-2) ends its regular season with a 13-1 league mark, having lost to Wakefield 17-15 earlier in the season. Wakefield is 13-2 overall and 12-1 in the league with a game against Wake Forest on Monday. A win would force a coin flip to determine the league’s top seed in the state playoffs, which begin Wednesday. Both teams likely will draw first-round byes into Friday’s second round. “All of our games with Wakefield are like this,” said Broughton assistant coach Jennifer Yoder, who was filling in for head coach Patricia Alexander, who was sick. “This year we’ve got a really good group of talented girls who work together so well. We knew we could win the conference this year.” Wakefield jumped out to a 5-2 lead. “We know that lead wouldn’t last; there would be runs both ways,” said Wakefield coach Denna Grasso, whose team played without top defender co-captain Darian Natividad. “These are two very good, very equal teams, and a tipped shot can be the difference.” Wakefield, which got three goals from Haley Cissel, led 6-5 at halftime. Cissel had an assist to Claudia Damiano for a goal and a 12-11 Wolverines lead with 2 minutes, 21 seconds left. Broughton bounced back with a tying goal by Sara Joyner with 1:44 left and the Caps took a timeout with 1:22 to play after they got the ball back. “On that last play there was no doubt, absolutely none, what we wanted to do,” Yoder said. “We wanted to stall, and take the last shot with either Kelsey or Sydney Fry. Kelsey said she wanted it and it worked out.” Dupere, who scored seven goals and had two assists in the game, will play at Elon next year. “I just kind of winged it,” Dupere said of the last play. “I just have to get in there near the goals and just see what happens.” Yoder pointed to the play of her midfield of Dupere, Fry, Farrell Guest, and Hattie Warner as a big key to the win. Grasso saw positives for her team in the loss. “Jessica had some great saves in goal and kept us in the game,” Grasso said. “She’s just a sophomore, it’s good to have her back two more years. “A game like this has to help us going into the playoffs. It shows where our strengths are, we had to keep up the intensity, and it’s good for our defense to see good shots like that,” Grasso said. CAPS SURVIVE OT AGAINST HUSKIES ON SENIOR NIGHT
On a perfect Spring evening for soccer, the Caps welcomed Cap 8 foe Heritage High School to Broughton and celebrated Senior Night.  Broughton's lone draw of the season was the earlier game at Heritage on the night of the Miley Cyrus concert.  The Caps would not let this one go, as a determined Broughton side fought hard against an aggressive, sometimes overly aggressive, Huskies team.  Surprisingly though, it was the Caps that were called for a foul inside the Broughton 18 yard box that led to the Huskies being awarded a penalty kick.  Junior 'keeper Allie Cutler read the kick perfectly, as it appeared to be gift wrapped and handed to her.  After the first 80 minutes of regulation play the score remained nil-nil.  The PK inspired the Caps and its supporters, as the home side took the lead just 3 minutes into the first 10 minute OT period when sophomore Daisy King fired a loose ball in the box past the Huskies goal keeper and into the back of the net.  The teams battled for the remaining 17 minutes of the two OT periods with the Caps coming out on top.  The Caps improved to 7-8-1 and fifth place (5-7-1) in Cap 8 competition.  Broughton concludes the regular season Monday night at home against 10th ranked Millbrook High School.  Come out and support the Caps as they make a push to qualify for the NCHSAA 4A tournament!  Congratulations to the Broughton seniors and "thank-you" for your commitment to the Caps soccer program the past four years!
