CapsLax Beat Athens in Playoff Opener
The men's Varsity Lacrosse team beat the tough Athens's Drive Jaguars in the second round of the state playoffs 12-11. The Caps devised and executed a great defensive game plan that kept a powerful Athens's offense off their game just enough. In the first half, the Caps scored 4 goals on 13 shots, while the Jaguars had 5 goals on 23 shots. The defense was led by Hayden Lovett, Jack Williams, and Joey Moore. Goalkeeper Paxton Massarelli had 8 saves. In the third quarter, the Caps jumped out to an 8-6 lead on efficient shooting, 8 goals in 20 shots. The Jags had 6 goals on 34 shots. In the fourth quarter, the Caps withstood a furious rally by the Jaguars. Led by Troy Jones 3 goals in the fourth, the Caps won 12-11. The Caps continued their efficient shooting by finishing with 12 goals on 27 shots, while the Athens's finished with 11 goals on 49 shots. Paxton Massarelli finished the game with 14 saves. Leading the Caps Lax in scoring was Troy Jones with 4 goals and Zach Burgess with 3 goals and 1 assist. Davis Weaver had 1 goal and 2 assists. Walker Rice and Cameron Gilchrist had 1 goal and 1 assist each. Jimbo Dixon and Mitch Snyder added 1 goal each. William Rice added 1 assist. Next up for the Caps is a game on the road at East Chapel Hill on Tuesday evening at 7:00.
