Day one of the Men's Golf State Championship is in the books and Broughton, the 2012 champion, is five shots ahead of defending champ Southern Pines Pinecrest. The championship is being contested on a par-72 layout set at 6,698 yards for the NCHSAA event - 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament yesterday at Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, NC and they will resume play this morning at 8am.
Preyer Fountain led the scoring for the Caps with a 71 - currently in second place behind (Cornelius, NC) Hough's Patrick Cover. Stephen Saleeby shot a 72, Will Minton fired a 73 and Harrison Rhoades and Court Settle each came in with 76.
A Wake County school has won the men’s 4-A team golf title 18 times in the last 28 years, including four of the last five, and the Caps have put themselves in a position to add to that total.
We're all cheering hard for you from Raleigh - Go low Caps, Go low - and go out there today and finish what you started - best of luck!
