Soccer: Caps score big win in Rocky Mount

Broughton earned its third straight non-conference win to start the season with a 5-0 road win Monday night at Rocky Mount High School.

Bryant O'Neal
Many of the usual starters played limited minutes as the Caps dominated play throughout the game, with several shots that just missed or forced the Rocky Mount keeper to make saves. Broughton keepers Frankie Stallings and Benjamin McCord only had to make a couple of saves to earn the first shutout of the season for the Caps.

Junior Bryant O'Neal got on the scoreboard first about eight minutes into the half when he slid a pass from junior Ike Drooz past the Rocky Mount keeper. About a minute later, sophomore Abdulle Ibrahim scored his second goal of the young season when he took a pass from senior Peter Winter and sent it just inside the near post from the left side of the field.

Junior C Badweh added another Broughton goal when he scored about midway through the first half by lofting a pass from junior Niko Hacklaender over the outstretched hand of the Rocky Mount keeper. The score was 3-0 in Broughton's favor at halftime.

C Badweh
Badweh scored again just four minutes into the second half off an assist from junior Nicolas Mizero. Junior Ibrahim Mohamud was credited with the final goal late in the game - his second of the season - off of an assist from senior Eli White.

A big shout out to the several parents and friends who made the trip to Rocky Mount to cheer on the Caps.

Broughton doesn't play again until Wednesday, Sept. 3, when they take on Clayton in a non-conference match at home.

Soccer: Frantic minute nets road win for Caps

The game took place over two nights, but the Broughton Caps sealed a 4-2 victory over Athens Drive Wednesday night with a fast-and-furious minute of scoring.

That's how long it took for the Caps to score three goals as the second half of the non-conference game got underway. The action Wednesday night was the completion of a game that began on Monday, only to be stopped midway through the first half due to stormy weather.

With the Caps trailing 0-1 at halftime on Wednesday, senior Brandon Gettinger got the scoring started for the Caps early in the second half when he put a pass from senior Matt Brickhouse into the net from close range.

It then took about 10 seconds for junior Elvis Wiredu to intercept the Athens Drive kick-off and pass to Brickhouse, who lofted a ball over the outstretched hands of the home team's keeper and into the net from 35 yards out. About 30 seconds later, senior Chris Vlahoplus finished off Broughton's flurry when he scored off an assist from junior Ibrahim Muhamud to make the score 3-1.

Brickhouse tried to keep the scoring going, missing just high on a shot about two minutes later, but Athens Drive then came scrambling back with aggressive play for several minutes. Defenders Hyu A, David Ridgeway, Grant Tyler and Jack Krueger held off repeated attacks by Athens Drive, and senior keeper Trey Morton made a few diving saves to block shots.

Broughton added to its total later in the first half when Wiredu blew past a defender and blasted a shot into the back of the net from a few yards out. Athens Drive scored late in the second half to make the final score 4-2.

The Caps next game is at 5 p.m. Monday at Rocky Mount High School.

Soccer: Caps open with win over SE Raleigh

The Broughton Caps kicked off the 2014 varsity soccer season Tuesday night with a 4-1 non-conference win over Southeast Raleigh.

The game started slowly, with both teams struggling to find a rhythm. But the Caps struck first, nearly midway through the first half, when junior Ibrahim Mohamud headed in a corner kick by junior Ike Drooz.

It didn't take long, though, for Southeast Raleigh to tie the score, converting a penalty kick as the result of a Broughton foul inside the box.

The Caps took control of the game at that point, connecting passes and just missing on several scoring opportunities. A header by sophomore Abdulle Ibrahim hit the post, and a long strike by senior Jack Krueger hit the crossbar.

With about two minutes remaining in the first half, the Caps caught the Southeast Raleigh keeper out of position and connected several short passes before Abdulle Ibrahim scored at close range off of an assist by junior Elvis Wiredu.

Broughton continued to apply pressure as the second half began, with senior Brandon Gettinger hitting the crossbar on a header. Following a  handball in the box by a Southeast Raleigh defender, Krueger converted a penalty kick to make the score 3-1.

Southeast Raleigh quickly threatened to get back in the game, forcing senior keeper Frankie Stallings to make a diving save to knock a shot wide of the goal. The Caps then failed to convert a penalty kick, but senior Eli White finished the game's scoring by burying a volley off of a beautiful cross by senior Peter Winter.

Every non-injured player on the Broughton team saw action in the 4-1 win. The Caps will return to Athens Drive on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. match against to finish the game that was stopped by stormy weather on Monday.

Fall Sports Kickoff - Time for support!

This fall Broughton fields varsity teams in men's cross country and in women's cross country, golf, and tennis. The Caps field both varsity and JV teams in football, men's soccer, and women's volleyball. That is a total of ten teams playing this season.

The Broughton Sports Update attempts to report on all of the sports teams throughout the year.  Currently the blog has over 200 email subscribers and over 200 Twitter followers that are very interested in Broughton sports. Volunteers who write the words, report the scores, and take the pictures are needed to keep the blog relevant.

As of August 19, we have the varsity soccer team, tennis team, and the golf team covered.  That leaves 7 teams that need a volunteer or two to commit to report scores and action on the blog.  It is very easy to do and we'll help you get started when you volunteer.  Local media sources ignore most of our sports, so we need your help to provide coverage and keep it fun.  If interested, please contact us at BroughtonSports@gmail.com.

If you haven't joined the Caps Club, our athletic booster club, please go here and join.  We need your support to keep all our teams alive and well.

Finally, our teams love a crowd and love noise, so show up at events when you can.   The blog displays the official athletic calendar so you can see which teams play and what time they play.  Show up and support our Caps!

Soccer: Opening game postponed by weather

Broughton's soccer season got off to a false start Monday night, as stormy weather led to the cancellation of the match at Athens Drive midway through the first half. The coaches are hoping to make the game up on Wednesday night. (See below.)

Fans who made it to the game tonight should hold on to their ticket stubs, which apparently can be used if the game is made up.

The junior varsity team did manage to get its season started, losing 0-8 to the junior varsity team from Athens Drive.

Don't forget Tuesday night's home opener against Southeast Raleigh. The game is scheduled for 6 pm - a half hour earlier than the usual start time.

UPDATE: The match at Athens Drive will resume at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. It will start midway through the first half, with the Caps down 0-1.

Soccer: Caps set to kick off a new season

The Caps kick off the soccer season this week with an away game at Athens Drive High School on Monday night and the home opener on Tuesday against Southeast Raleigh.

Broughton is looking to build on last year's strong season, when they finished third in the Cap 8 Conference and made it to the second round of the state playoffs. The team returns three all-conference players - Matt Brickhouse, Jack Krueger and Chris Vlahoplus - as well as goalkeepers Trey Morton and Frankie Stallings and several players who played key roles on the varsity or junior varsity teams.

The season begins at 4:30 p.m. at Athens Drive with the junior varsity game, followed at roughly 6:30 by the varsity game.

Fan are encouraged to come out Tuesday for the home opener against Southeast Raleigh. There is no junior varsity game that day, so the varsity match will begin a half hour earlier than usual - at 6 pm. Come cheer on your Broughton Caps!
