Soccer: Frantic minute nets road win for Caps

The game took place over two nights, but the Broughton Caps sealed a 4-2 victory over Athens Drive Wednesday night with a fast-and-furious minute of scoring.

That's how long it took for the Caps to score three goals as the second half of the non-conference game got underway. The action Wednesday night was the completion of a game that began on Monday, only to be stopped midway through the first half due to stormy weather.

With the Caps trailing 0-1 at halftime on Wednesday, senior Brandon Gettinger got the scoring started for the Caps early in the second half when he put a pass from senior Matt Brickhouse into the net from close range.

It then took about 10 seconds for junior Elvis Wiredu to intercept the Athens Drive kick-off and pass to Brickhouse, who lofted a ball over the outstretched hands of the home team's keeper and into the net from 35 yards out. About 30 seconds later, senior Chris Vlahoplus finished off Broughton's flurry when he scored off an assist from junior Ibrahim Muhamud to make the score 3-1.

Brickhouse tried to keep the scoring going, missing just high on a shot about two minutes later, but Athens Drive then came scrambling back with aggressive play for several minutes. Defenders Hyu A, David Ridgeway, Grant Tyler and Jack Krueger held off repeated attacks by Athens Drive, and senior keeper Trey Morton made a few diving saves to block shots.

Broughton added to its total later in the first half when Wiredu blew past a defender and blasted a shot into the back of the net from a few yards out. Athens Drive scored late in the second half to make the final score 4-2.

The Caps next game is at 5 p.m. Monday at Rocky Mount High School.
