The Caps opened the game with a slew of scoring opportunities, but missed wide or had shots blocked before senior Chris Vlahoplus finished off a through-ball from senior Brandon Gettinger to take a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.
Barely a minute later, the Wake Forest keeper was fortunate to get his outstretched foot on a rocket of a shot by junior Elvis Wiredu. But Wiredu helped add to Broughton's total a few minutes later when he passed to senior Matt Brickhouse, who put in a shot from close range to make the score 2-0.
Wake Forest responded with a quick goal of its own to make the score 2-1, but the Caps responded even quicker when sophomore Abdulle Ibrahim scored about 30 seconds later off a through-ball from Brickhouse to make the score 3-1.
The flurry of action also resulted in a red card and ejection for the Wake Forest head coach. The score at halftime was 3-1.
Broughton struck just a few minutes into the second half, when Brickhouse scored his second goal of the game off of a pass from junior Grant Tyler to give the Caps a 4-1 lead.
The score stayed the same through much of the second half, thanks in part to a save by Broughton keeper Benjamin McCord on a strong shot by Wake Forest with about 14 minutes remaining in the game.
But with less than eight minutes remaining in the game, Wake Forest scored off a strong free kick from just outside the box and then scored again a couple of minutes later to close the gap to 4-3. The Caps then maintained possession for much of the remainder of the game to notch their fourth win (against one tie) in conference play.
The Caps return home for two conference games next week, the first one on Monday night against Heritage. Encourage your friends and family members to come out to support the Caps.
