Soccer: Caps score big road win at Wakefield

The Caps opened a week of three conference road games with a convincing 4-1 win at Wakefield on Monday night.

Broughton was the aggressor from the beginning, just missing on a couple of shots in the game's opening minutes. Then senior Brandon Gettinger caught the Wakefield keeper flat-footed with a sudden strike from outside the box that put the Caps up 1-0 five minutes into the game. Senior Chris Vlahoplus assisted on the goal.

David Ridgeway
The Caps barely missed on a few more shots before junior Ibrahim Mohamud put Broughton ahead 2-0 about 10 minutes into the game with a shot from close range after a series of passes that began as a corner kick. Junior Ike Drooz assisted on the goal.

Wakefield had a chance to get back in the game midway through the first half, but hit the post from close range despite having an open shot at the goal. Junior Bryant O'Neal quickly took advantage a couple of minutes later, finishing off a pass from senior Peter Winter to make the score 3-0 at halftime.

It didn't take long for Broughton to add to their total as the second half began, with Mohamud converting a penalty kick after drawing a foul in the box less than two minutes into the half to make the score 4-0.

Jack Krueger
The Caps' defense, led by seniors David Ridgeway and Jack Krueger, fought off repeated attacks by Wakefield the rest of the game. At one point midway through the second half, keeper Frankie Stallings made back-to-back saves before Krueger escaped from the scrum in front of the net to clear the ball.

Wakefield had several shots go wide or high, but finally managed to get on the scoreboard with about 12 minutes to go in the game. The final score was 4-1 in favor of the Caps.

Earlier, the Broughton junior varsity team played Wakefield to a 1-1 tie, with Tyler Youngberg scoring late in the game off an assist by Will Hernandez.

Broughton's next game is Wednesday night at Enloe.
