Soccer: Caps clinch Cap 8 conference title

Broughton celebrated Senior Night on Monday by clinching the Cap 8 regular season title for the first time since 2009. The Caps sealed the championship with a hard-fought 2-1 win over visiting Enloe in front of a large home crowd.

The game started with all 10 of Broughton's seniors in the starting line-up, including keeper Trey Morton playing in the field as a defender while fellow keeper Frankie Stallings was in the goal.

The two teams went back-and-forth for much of the half, with Broughton missing on several scoring opportunities. But it was Enloe that had the best chances in the first half. Stallings made a critical save on an Enloe free kick from outside the box with about nine minutes remaining in the half and then an Enloe goal in the last minute of the half was voided by an offsides call.

Broughton went back on the attack in the second half, creating several scoring opportunities and corner kicks. The Caps finally got on the scoreboard about eight minutes into the half when junior Bryant O'Neal crossed a ball into the box to onrushing senior Matt Brickhouse, who poked the ball into the net to make the score 1-0.

The Caps had several more missed scoring chances before junior Ike Drooz converted on a free kick to make the score 2-0 with less than nine minutes remaining in the game.

Enloe got on the scoredboard a couple of minutes later when one of the Eagles' players launched a free kick into the goal from 50 yards out. Broughton managed to hold off a few other Enloe attacks to seal the 2-1 win.

At halftime, the team's 10 seniors were recognized along with their parents, siblings and grandparents. A big shout-out to this year's conference-winning seniors: Matt Brickhouse, Brandon Gettinger, Jack Krueger, Trey Morton, David Ridgeway, Frankie Stallings, Chris Vlahoplus, Eli White, David Winter and Peter Winter.

Earlier, Broughton's junior varsity scored a decisive 6-1 win over Enloe. Goals were scored by Graham Gunter, Rees Massarelli, Yassir Moumen, William Hernandez, Jack Ashby and Elias Kuhns. Chris Canderos, Doug Scott, Eric Johnsen (2) and Elias Kuhns recorded assists in the game.

The Caps close out the regular season Wednesday night with a road game at Heritage. Then it's on to the state playoffs! Go Caps!
