Soccer: Caps suffer first loss of the season

Broughton suffered its first loss of the season Monday night in a fast-and-furious road contest against Sanderson.

Jack Krueger
The Caps struck first, when senior Jack Krueger put a bullet of a shot into the goal from outside the box less than a minute into the game. Senior Brandon Gettinger assisted on the goal.

But the Caps then found themselves playing defense against an aggressive Sanderson team for much of the first half. Sanderson scored twice in the half and junior defender Grant Tyler prevented another Sanderson goal near the end of the half when he cleared a ball in front of an open net.

Broughton had some scoring chances as the second half began, with the Sanderson keeper making good saves on shots by Krueger and then Gettinger.

Elvis Wiredu
Then, about 10 minutes into the half, junior Elvis Wiredu dived to put a header into the goal off a corner kick to tie the score at 2-2. Gettinger assisted on the goal.

But Sanderson scored twice more in the second half, once off a free kick and once off a long throw-in that somehow found its way into the goal, to earn the 2-4 win.

The Caps' record now stands at 12-1-2 overall and 9-1-1 in conference play with three conference games remaining in the regular season. Their next game is Wednesday, at home against Wakefield.
