Volleyball: Broughton Downs Hoggard 3-1 to Move to Semifinals

Broughton (20-0) defeated Hoggard 25-15, 21-25, 25-9, 27-25 on Saturday to advance to Tuesday's NCHSAA 4A east region final.  The Caps will host J.H. Rose who beat East Chapel Hill in their quarterfinal tilt tonight in Greenville.

Hoggard High School faces Broughton High School in the NCHSAA Volleyball 2014 Playoffs on Saturday October 25. After a good challenge from the Vikings, Broughton dug in and took the match 3 to 1. (Chris Baird / WRAL Contributor).

Katja Ehlers pounded out a match-high 24 kills (.455) to lead a potent Caps offense.  Tiana Butler collected 15 kills (.448) and 5 blocks and Kati Smith added 11 kills (.381), 32 assists and 11 digs.  Adria Johnson had 7 kills, a match-high 4 aces and 4 blocks.  Genna Simpkins scooped up 14 digs and Lauren Brustofski and Ehlers each posted 8 digs.  The Caps outhit Hoggard .309 to .212.  The Vikings (22-3) were paced by Alyssa Zupan with 15 kills (.393) and Elly Cosgrove with 10 kills (.231) 

Broughton started fast by taking an 11-4 lead in the opening set and cruised to a 25-15 win. Hoggard claimed the second game by outscoring the Caps 4-1 after the two teams were knotted at 20-20.  The Capitals won the third game 25-9 to take a 2-sets-to-1 lead but Hoggard jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the fourth stanza.  Broughton then tied things up at 23-23 before eventually closing out the match 27-25.
