Soccer: Caps players earn post-season honors

The success that the Caps had as a team this season -- winning the Cap 8 Conference and the NCHSAA 4A East titles -- led to individual post-season honors for several members of the team.

Coach Nick Wheeler announced Monday night at Broughton's Fall Sports Banquet that seven members of the team had been named to the Cap 8 All-Conference team. They are seniors Matt Brickhouse, Brandon Gettinger, Jack Krueger, Frankie Stallings and Chris Vlahoplus, and juniors Ike Drooz and Elvis Wiredu.

Trey Morton
Broughton also had four of the 11 players named to the All-Region team for Region 5. The four Broughton players chosen were Brickhouse, Gettinger, Krueger and Vlahoplus. Wheeler was named the 4A coach of the year for Region 5.

And Broughton had three players named to the 4A All-State team - one of only two schools with that many players on the team. The three Broughton players chosen were Brickhouse, Krueger and Vlahoplus. It was Krueger's second All-State selection.

Brickhouse, who led the Caps in goals and assists this year, was named the team's MVP. Senior keeper and team co-captain Trey Morton received the Four Star Coach's Award.

Junior Grant Tyler was awarded the 2014 NC Farm Bureau Insurance Sportsmanship award at the state championship game on Saturday.

Soccer: A bitter end to a sweet season for Caps

A storybook season for the Broughton Caps ended unhappily on a chilly Saturday night, as the Caps fell 0-1 to Reagan High School in the NCHSAA 4A state championship game at NC State.

The Caps possessed the ball for much of the game, particularly in the first half, but were unable to finish any of their scoring chances. The game was a defensive struggle throughout, with Reagan packing multiple defenders in and around the Broughton box.

After the first half ended in a scoreless tie, Reagan finally broke through with the game's lone goal about midway through the second half. Broughton had other scoring chances, including one shot that hit off the post with about seven minutes remaining in the game, but were unable to put one in the net.

Broughton finishes the year as Cap 8 Conference champions and NCHSAA 4A East champions. Congratulations, boys, on a great season. Go Caps!

Soccer: Broughton wins 4A East title, will play for state championship on Saturday

Senior Matt Brickhouse scored three goals Tuesday night to lead Broughton to a 5-2 victory over New Hanover and into the 4A state championship game on Saturday.

Playing before a large home crowd, Broughton controlled the game from the outset and had several scoring chances in the game's first 15 minutes. In one instance, junior Elvis Wiredu pulled off a bicycle kick inside the box, only to have the ball go directly to the New Hanover keeper.

The scorers (left to right): Brandon Gettinger,
Chris Vlahoplus, Matt Brickhouse
But 16 minutes into the game, junior Ibrahim Mohamud chased down a ball headed toward the end line and crossed it just before it rolled out. Brickhouse headed the ball into the net for his first goal of the game, giving Broughton a 1-0 lead.

New Hanover responded by stepping up its attack, earning several scoring opportunities over the next 10 minutes. But keeper Trey Morton and Broughton's defenders were able to keep New Hanover off the scoreboard.

Then, with eight minutes remaining in the half, senior Chris Vlahoplus finished off a pass from Mohamud for Broughton's second goal of the game. It was Mohamud's second assist on the night, and gave the Caps a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Broughton didn't let up as the second half began, with Brickhouse scoring just three minutes into the half on a mini-breakaway off a pass from Wiredu to put Broughton ahead 3-0.

New Hanover finally got on the scoreboard about five minutes later when it converted a penalty kick after drawing a Broughton penalty in the box.

The visitors stayed on the attack for the next several minutes, forcing Broughton keeper Frankie Stallings to make four saves during a four-minute stretch midway through the half. But New Hanover managed to get another ball in the net to make the score 3-2.

Senior captains: Trey Morton, Chris Vlahoplus, Matt
Brickhouse, Jack Krueger (with head coach Nick Wheeler)
But with New Hanover pressing to tie the game, Broughton gave themselves some cushion with about 12 minutes remaining in the game when Brickhouse scored his third goal off a cross from sophomore Abdulle Ibrahim.

Stallings made another save a couple of minutes later as New Hanover scrambled to try to get back in the game. But Broughton finished off the scoring with seven minutes remaining in the game, when senior Brandon Gettinger buried a corner kick from junior Ike Drooz to give the Caps a 5-2 lead.

The 2014 Broughton men's soccer team has now claimed two titles this season -- they are the Cap 8 Conference champions and the NCHSAA 4A East champions -- and will have a shot at a third title when they face West champion Reagan High School in Saturday's state championship game at NC State. Game time is 5:05 p.m.

But before the Caps move on to the final game of the season, a few shoutouts are in order for some of those who have helped off the field this season. Shoutouts go to:

  • Senior Sean Betts, the voice of the Broughton men's soccer team
  • Senior Sam Holden, keeper of the clock

Soccer: Caps win to move on to semifinals

Broughton is moving on to the Final Four of the state soccer playoffs after scrapping and clawing its way to a 3-2 victory over Middle Creek Saturday night.

The Caps found themselves behind for the first time in the playoffs when Middle Creek scored off a long throw-in about 11 minutes into the game to go up 0-1. Just a couple of minutes later, junior defender Bryant O'Neal made a critical defensive stop on a 2-on-1 breakaway by Middle Creek.

Bryant O'Neal
It wasn't long, though, before Broughton managed to get on the scoreboard. Senior Brandon Gettinger finished off a good crossing pass from senior Matt Brickhouse about 15 minutes into the half to make the score 1-1.

Coming into the game, Broughton had only given up one goal in the playoffs - off a penalty kick by Apex. But Middle Creek crowded the box on throw-ins, and scored again midway through the first half off a long throw-in to take a 1-2 lead.

While Middle Creek made the most of its scoring chances in the first half, Broughton missed high or wide on several opportunities in the final few minutes of the first half. At halftime, the Caps were trailing 1-2.

The two teams traded possession for the first nine minutes of the second  half before senior defender Jack Krueger hit a bullet of a shot into the net from about 25 yards out to tie the score at 2-2.

About three minutes later, Brickhouse headed the ball over the reach of the onrushing Middle Creek keeper and then finished the shot into the back of the net to put Broughton ahead for the first time in the game, 3-2.

Frankie Stallings
Broughton spent much of the rest of the game fending off Middle Creek attacks. Senior keeper Frankie Stallings punched away a Middle Creek free kick about midway through the half and then made another save off a long throw-in with about seven minutes remaining in the game.

Middle Creek may have had its best chance to get back in the game less than a minute later, when the ball appeared to be heading into the goal off a corner kick before Krueger blocked it with his chest to the foot of junior defender Hyu A, who cleared the ball out of harm's way.

Broughton held on for the game's final few minutes to earn the 3-2 win before a large home crowd. The Caps will play New Hanover at Broughton Tuesday night (time to be determined) for a chance to advance to the state championship game. Go Caps!

Soccer: Caps advance with 3-1 win over Apex

Broughton earned a hard-fought 3-1 win over visiting Apex Wednesday night to advance to the fourth round of the state playoffs. The Caps will play Middle Creek Saturday at Broughton (time still to be determined).

Playing in front of large home crowd, the Caps traded possessions with the Cougars for the first 15 minutes of the game. Broughton managed to earn several corner kicks, though, and eventually converted one to take a 1-0 lead  about 17 minutes  into the game when senior Chris Vlahoplus headed in the cross from junior Ike Drooz.

Apex came roaring back immediately, forcing Broughton keeper Frankie Stallings to punch away a shot less than a minute later. It was reflective of the fast pace of the game, with both teams quickly turning to attack when they gained possession. The first half ended with the Caps holding a slim 1-0 lead.

Apex attacked immediately when the second half began, forcing Broughton keeper Trey Morton to make a save on a shot about two minutes into the half.

Ike Drooz
But the Caps came back to take a 2-0 lead about 15 minutes into the half when senior Brandon Gettinger headed in a lofted free kick from Drooz. It was the second assist of the night for Drooz.

It looked as if the Caps would have another prime scoring opportunity about 25 minutes into the half when Drooz drew what appeared to be a foul inside the box. But the referee placed the ball outside the box, and the subsequent shot by the Caps sailed high.

The Caps added to their total about a minute later thanks to a second goal by Vlahoplus, who stole the ball from an Apex defender in the box and put it into the back of the net.

Apex got on the scoreboard about two minutes later when the referee called a Broughton penalty in the box. The Cougars converted the penalty kick, the first goal scored against the Caps in the playoffs.

Broughton's defenders held off repeated Apex attacks over the game's final 10 minutes to earn the 3-1 victory.

Soccer: Caps advance with win over Heritage

Broughton shook off a sluggish start on a cold and blustery Saturday to roar back for a 4-0 win over Heritage in the second round of the state playoffs.

Heritage kept the Caps on the defensive for much of the first half. Senior defender Jack Krueger cleared a dangerous ball out of the box about midway through the first half and keeper Trey Morton punched out a Heritage shot about six minutes later.

But the Caps settled down late in the half and started taking some of the attack to Heritage, with senior Matt Brickhouse forcing the Heritage keeper to make a save on a shot that was on goal.

The scorers (left to right): Brandon Gettinger,
Elvis Wiredu, Ike Drooz
Then, with two minutes remaining in the half, Brickhouse crossed a ball to senior Brandon Gettinger, who headed it into the goal to get Broughton on the scoreboard for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Broughton stayed on the attack as the second half began, with Brickhouse shot again forcing the Heritage keeper to make a save. A little over 10 minutes into the half, Broughton capitalized on a corner kick when junior Elvis Wiredu tapped in a shot out of the scrum in front of the goal. Brickhouse assisted on the goal to make the score 2-0.

Wiredu, back after missing a few games due to injury, added another goal about 10 minutes later when he fired a shot into the upper corner of the goal. Senior Chris Vlahoplus was credited with the assist, making the score 3-0 for the Caps.

Broughton's defenders thwarted several Heritage attacks throughout the second half, with junior Hyu A repeatedly fending off Heritage's forwards.

But Broughton continued to attack when it had the ball, forcing the Heritage keeper to come outside the box to try to stop a breakaway by the Caps with about six minutes to go in the game. The keeper was given a red card for using his hands outside the box, and junior Ike Drooz converted the subsequent free kick to give Brougton a 4-0 lead.

Keepers Frankie Stallings and Morton combined on the shutout, the second consecutive shutout for the Caps in the playoffs. It was Broughton's third win of the season over Heritage.

The Caps, now done with the Cap 8 portion of the playoffs, will next play the winner of the game between Apex and New Bern. The game will be played at Broughton either Tuesday or Wednesday evening.
