Soccer: Caps players earn post-season honors

The success that the Caps had as a team this season -- winning the Cap 8 Conference and the NCHSAA 4A East titles -- led to individual post-season honors for several members of the team.

Coach Nick Wheeler announced Monday night at Broughton's Fall Sports Banquet that seven members of the team had been named to the Cap 8 All-Conference team. They are seniors Matt Brickhouse, Brandon Gettinger, Jack Krueger, Frankie Stallings and Chris Vlahoplus, and juniors Ike Drooz and Elvis Wiredu.

Broughton also had four of the 11 players named to the All-Region team for Region 5. The four Broughton players chosen were Brickhouse, Gettinger, Krueger and Vlahoplus. Wheeler was named the 4A coach of the year for Region 5.

And Broughton had three players named to the 4A All-State team - one of only two schools with that many players on the team. The three Broughton players chosen were Brickhouse, Krueger and Vlahoplus. It was Krueger's second All-State selection.

Brickhouse, who led the Caps in goals and assists this year, was named the team's MVP. Senior keeper and team co-captain Trey Morton received the Four Star Coach's Award.

Junior Grant Tyler was awarded the 2014 NC Farm Bureau Insurance Sportsmanship award at the state championship game on Saturday.
