Caps take early lead for Wells Fargo Cup

A successful fall season has boosted Broughton to the top of the initial statewide standings for the Wells Fargo Cup for 2014-15.

The award, sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank and the N.C. High School Athletic Association, recognizes excellence in interscholastic athletics by North Carolina high schools.

Broughton leads the 4-A rankings, thanks to the state championship won by the men's cross country team, a runner-up finish in the state championship by the men's soccer team, and a regional final runner-up finish by the volleyball team. Four Broughton teams - men's cross country, men's soccer, volleyball, and women's tennis - won conference championships in the fall.

Standings for the Wells Fargo Cup are determined by performance in state championship events.

Broughton has a narrow lead in the standings over Green Hope, which won the Cup last year. The only other area teams in the top 15 in the 4-A standings are Panther Creek (#6) and Wakefield (#13).

Two Caps Medal at 43rd annual WRAL Invitational

Seven Caps wrestled into the second day of the 43rd annual WRAL Invitational Tournament held Friday and Saturday at Athens Drive High School. The individual double-elimination tournament hosted wrestlers from over 30 schools representing 3 states.

Josh Zinner, Nash Philbeck, Braxton May, Di Rahlan and Manny Robinson made it to day two of the tournament which was packed with state placers and ranked wrestlers. In addition, Senior Lamont Burt and Freshman Nic Valdespino each fought their way to the consolation finals with each placing 4th in what is arguably the toughest tournament in the state.

Burt defeated 4A #6 ranked Miles Kent from Panther Creek and took Blake Hohman, 2014 Virginia state runner-up and VMI recruit to overtime during his march to the podium. Valdespino defeated 4A #5 ranked David Bostian (Laney HS) and 4A #8 ranked Ben Long (Alexander Central) to get to the consolation finals as well. Caps Wrestling: Zinner Has Big Week on the Mat

Sophomore Josh Zinner's pin in the last match of the dual Wednesday night salvaged a tie against Cap VIII power Millbrook. Tie matches are decided by criteria and, in this case, the "W" went to Millbrook despite a courageous Caps effort.  Braxton May, Christian Hite, and Nash Philbeck also turned in especially gutsy performances to keep the Caps in it.  Last week the Caps lost a tough dual at Leesville Rd. Three Caps, however, went 2-0 on the week including undefeated Senior Lamont Burt (12-0), Sophomore Josh Zinner (7-4) and Freshman Nic Valdespino (11-1).

The Caps are in action this weekend at the 43rd Annual WRAL tournament in which nearly 40 schools will be participating. The two-day event will be held at Athens Drive High School this Friday and Saturday.
