SERIOUSLY?!

This was what the Caps supporters heard shouted from across the pitch by the Leesville High School coach Thursday evening as junior Lily Schneider lay on the ground after a hard tackle and obvious foul which caused the referee to stop play.  On a rough night of physical play Broughton was only able to walk away (which was hard for some due to the kicks to ankles and shins) from the Pride's home pitch with a 1-1 draw.  The sides went into halftime knotted nil-nil.  In the 46th minute junior Julia Stevens cracked a splendid shot for the Caps only goal on the night.  As the second half wore on, Leesville was able to get the equalizer in the 74th minute of play when junior Isabelle "Izzy" White, a current CASL teammate of Caps junior Sarah Grace Lasso, and former teammate of several other Caps players, found the back of the net.  After two ten minute overtimes in which neither side could get the go-ahead goal, the game ended.  Seriously?  The Caps are now 10-1-1 and 8-1-1 in Cap 8.  Broughton welcomes Wakefield's Wolverines to St. Mary's Street Wednesday night, April 29th, for a 6:30 p.m. kick-off.  The Caps plan to "thank" the Wolverines for their only loss on the season.

BROUGHTON CAPS WILDCATS!

Broughton's women's soccer improved its record for the 2015 campaign to 10-1, 8-1 in Cap 8 play, by defeating Millbrook in a home fixture Wednesday night.  The Caps opened the scoring in the 13th minute when junior Wake Forest commit Lily Schneider buried a well-placed cross from sophomore Carly Black into the back of the Wildcats net.  Senior Allie Cutler, recently named to represent North Carolina in the annual Clash of the Carolinas, was called upon in the 22nd and 33rd minutes to save shots from the Millbrook arsenal.  Junior Julia Stevens almost put her side up by two goals, but her 38th minute shot off a cross from Schneider sailed just wide of, dare I say it, the old onion bag.  After halftime the Wildcats kept firing and the Caps' crossbar saved a near goal in the 50th minute.  Seven minutes later junior Campbell commit Kelly Ann Evans used her left foot to find the back of the net scoring the Caps' second goal with an assist by junior Emma Willard.  Willard, who worked hard the entire evening, finally found pay dirt in the 67the minute when she received a pass from senior Dakota Zuehlke and buried her shot for the final goal of the night.  The Caps return to action tonight at Leesville Road at 6:30.  The Pride are currently 6-4-1, 4-3-1 in Cap 8.

Soccer: Cutler and Krueger named to Clash of the Carolinas rosters

Broughton's Allie Cutler and Jack Krueger have been named to the North Carolina rosters for the annual Clash of the Carolinas soccer games pitting the best graduating seniors from North Carolina against their counterparts from South Carolina.

The games will be played Saturday, June 27, in Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C. The girls square off first, followed by the boys' game. They also will be honored at a banquet on Friday night.

Cutler is the keeper and a team captain who has led the Lady Caps to a 10-1 record and first place in the Cap 8 standings a little more than midway through the season. Krueger, a defender, was also a team captain who helped lead the boys' team to the Cap 8 championship and then to the state championship game in the fall.

BHS Golf Wins Crown at Anderson Creek- Rhoades has Hole in One

The Caps traveled to Spring Lake North Carolina today to compete in the Anderson Creek High School Invitational.  The annual high school invitational tournament of 12 teams included perennial power Pinecrest from Pinehurst NC plus a talented high school program from Quebec Canada.

The Caps were up for the competition and captured the tournament title with a total team score of 293 to best second place Pinecrest by four shots.  The team was led by Harrison Rhoades who fired a blistering five under par 67 highlighted by a hole and one.  He also tied the tournament record set by former Broughton great Webb Simpson.  The next three scores that counted for BHS included Senior Will Minton with a strong 73 followed by a 76 from Sophomore Jimbo Stanley and a 77 from Freshman Patrick Carlin.  BHS also entered a second team in the event which finished 9th overall led by a score of 77 from Junior Hardy Hogan.

This was the team's second tournament victory of the season.  The team returns to action Monday in Cap 8 play at Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State.

Soccer: Caps finish off win over Enloe

The Caps women's soccer team overcame a sluggish start - or restart - on Thursday before launching a second-half assault to secure a 7-2 win against Enloe in a game that was interrupted last week by lightning.

The game, at Enloe, resumed in the 15th minute with Broughton leading 3-0. But Enloe wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard - notching a goal less than a minute into the restart. The score remained 3-1 at halftime, but Enloe struck again in the 43rd minute by converting a free kick from just outside the box to make the score 3-2.

Broughton's senior keeper, Allie Cutler, was forced to make a big save a couple of minutes later to keep Enloe from scoring a third goal to tie the game.

Then the tide turned, with the Caps connecting more of their passes and creating scoring opportunities for several of the players in purple jerseys. In the 48th minute, junior Emma Willard finished off a pass from junior Lily Schneider to put the Caps up 4-2. It was the completion of a hat trick for Willard, who had scored two goals before the game was interrupted last week. (Freshman Taylor Sutter scored the game's other goal last week.)

About six minutes later, junior Sarah Grace Lasso buried a cross from freshman Meredith Brown to put the Caps back up by three goals.

But the Caps weren't done with their offensive attack. After sophomore Savannah Jones drew a foul in the box in the 64th minute, Brown converted on the penalty kick to give Broughton a 6-2 lead. Schneider followed up two minutes later with a bullet of a shot from outside the box, with Willard getting the assist. Cutler held off one last Enloe attack, on a dangerous free kick from outside the box, to seal the 7-2 victory for Broughton.

The win - which saw everyone on the Broughton bench get playing time - runs the Caps' record to 7-1 in conference play (9-1 overall) as they finish the first run through their Cap 8 opponents. The Caps travel to Leesville and host Millbrook in conference games next week.
CAPS ESCAPE TRENTINI STADIUM WITH WIN!

On a raining evening in Wake Forest, the Broughton Caps women's soccer team's mettle was tested for the full 80 minutes by the Wake Forest Cougars.  With rain falling and a pitch that showed the wear and tear of the Fall's football season, Caps junior Julia Stevens tried to get the scoring started sending a cross through the 18 yard box in the 3rd minute that fellow junior Lily Schneider was able to collect only to have her shot carom off the goal post.  Twenty hard fought minutes later Schneider was taken down by a Cougars defender just inside the right side of the 18 for which she was awarded a shot from the penalty spot.  Schneider converted putting the Caps up 1-0.  The trench warfare continued and in the 38th minute senior goal keeper Allie Cutler stopped a Wake Forest shot by Hannah Dion only to have the ball bounce off Dion and find the goal.  1-1 at the half.  Broughton would come out with renewed energy in the second half.  In the 43rd minute, junior Sarah Grace Lasso collected a pass and dribbled into the 18, her arching shot was touched up and onto the crossbar by the Cougars keeper.  The ball fell onto the on-running sophomore Savannah Jones who punched it in to the back of the net.  2-1 Caps.  The Cougars would not concede and in the 55th minute, Dion, collected a pass and dribbled down the right flank past the Caps defender before slotting a low shot past Cutler.  2-2.  Not wanting to drop a game to Wake Forest, the Caps fought on and in the 67th minute junior Emma Willard does what she does and found the old onion bag to put the Caps up 3-2 and seal the win.  Broughton is now 8-1 and ranked #10 in the 4-A state rankings, 6-1 and atop Cap 8.  The Caps will complete last Thursday's weather delayed game at Enloe this afternoon at 4:30 at Enloe.  The Caps have a 3-0 lead with 15:09 left in the first half.  Monday the Caps travel to ever-dangerous foe Leesville Road High School for a Cap 8 contest.

BHS Mens Golf Goes Low to Remain Undefeated in Cap 8 Conference Play

The Caps had a strong showing today in Cap 8 Conference play at Heritage.  The team had a combined score of 143 today or one under par which was two shots better than second place Millbrook.  Millbrook posted their score first with BHS still on the course after a rain delay.  The team knew they could not afford to make a bogie to finish the round and the team responded. Seniors Will Minton, Stephen Saleeby and Harrison Rhoades all responded with birdies on the par 5 eighteenth hole followed by solid pars from Senior Sam Holden and Sophomore Jimbo Stanley.

Overall Harrison Rhoades and Stephen Saleeby led the team with scores of 34 and 35.  Other solid results were posted by Will Minton and Jimbo Stanley with a pair of 37's followed by a solid 38 from Sam Holden.   The highlight of the day was the last BHS swing of the day with Sam Holden puring an iron from 140 yards to 10 inches from the hole to save his par on the last hole.  This was a fitting end to the day for the Caps.
CAPS MUZZLE HUSKIES

The Broughton Caps women's soccer team improved to 7-1 (5-1 Cap 8) Monday night with a decisive 3-1 result against the visiting Heritage Huskies.  The Caps opened the scoring in the 12th minute when junior Julia Stevens found the back of the net with an assist by fellow junior Sarah Grace Lasso.  Seven minutes later, another junior, Kelly Ann Evans, added to her account after making a well-timed run down the center of the pitch to receive a beautiful cross from the right flank from junior Emma Willard who had run down a searching ball from Lasso.  The Caps almost had a third goal in the 37th minute, when sophomore Savannah Jones unleashed a shot, but the Huskies goal keeper made the save.  Eight minutes in to the second half Heritage collected one back from the Caps on one of the few shots that have made it by senior goal keeper Allie Cutler this campaign.  Unfortunately for the visitors the Caps were not finished.  Willard received a pass from junior Lily Schneider at the midfield circle and after settling the ball with her chest, danced with it around the Heritage defense before dribbling at the Huskies keeper to score the final goal of the match in the 67th minute.  The Caps gas up the bus for the short ride to Wake Forest High School on Wednesday. As always, the junior varsity kicks off at 4:30 with the varsity to follow  against the Cougars at 6:30.

BHS Mens Golf

The Caps played in the TYGA State Invitational today at the very difficult Treyburn Golf Course in Durham.  The tournament included all the top public and private schools teams in the State.  BHS finished 5th in the event led by Seniors Will Minton and Stephen Saleeby with scores of 76 followed by Senior Harrison Rhoades with a score of 78.  Sophomore Jimbo Stanley rounded out the scoring for the Caps.

While the result is not what the Caps expected they will use this event as motivation to work harder in preparation for defending their 4A Regional and State Championships from 2014.  The Caps return to action at Heritage on Tuesday in a Cap 8 Conference event where they will strive to remain undefeated in conference play.

CAPS vs. EAGLES - PART I

The Broughton women's soccer team traveled the 4.29 miles it takes to get to William G. Enloe Magnet High School on Thursday evening with Greg Fishel's ominous weather forecast in the back of their minds.  The "Fish" would not disappoint and neither would the Caps in the 24 minutes and 51 seconds of soccer they played.  In that brief time before lightning rolled in, the Caps managed to put 3 goals on the scoreboard and hold the Eagles at nil.  Without starting line-up introductions and our beloved Star Spangled Banner, in order to try to beat the impending storm, junior Emma Willard thought she'd get things going early, as well, striking first in the 4th minute from the left side just inside the 18 yard box.  She wasn't finished either, as she received a pass from distance from senior defender Carson Taylor in the 6th minute to put one past the keeper from the right side.  Junior Sarah Grace Lasso tried to get in on the action in the 9th minute, but her header from the center of the 18 sailed just over the cross bar.  The Caps were a little shaken in the 13th minute when an Eagles player plowed over senior goal keeper Allie Cutler.  After a brief stop in the action, junior Lily Schneider played a nice ball to a streaking freshman Taylor Sutter who collected her second goal of the campaign in the 22nd minute.  Shortly, thereafter, the thunderstorm gave the Eagles the relief they needed when the game was stopped due to lightning.  Stayed tuned for the reschedule date.  The Caps will return to action on their home pitch when the Heritage High School Huskies come to Broughton Monday night, April 13th, at 4:30(JV) and 6:30(V).

CAPS DROP FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON TO WOLVERINES

Broughton's women's soccer team, which entered the week ranked #9 in the Eurosport 4A rankings with an unblemished record at 6-0, dropped its first match of the season last night at Wakefield High School, 2-1.  The Caps knew that the Wolverines would be a fierce opponent as they are led by Duke recruit Kat McDonald in the midfield.  Broughton's side came out to compete early with its first opportunity on a shot on goal by junior Sarah Grace Lasso that was stopped by the Wakefield goal keeper.  Unfortunately, the momentum shifted quickly and the Wolverines put themselves up 2-0 on goals by McDonald and Nanni in the 25th and 27th minutes.  Junior Emma Willard tried to get one back for the Caps a minute later, but her shot just outside the goal line at the left of the goal face went wide.  Broughton kept fighting and in the 30th minute freshman Meredith Brown notched her third goal of the campaign.  Senior Allie Cutler kept the Wolverines from adding to the score with terrific saves in the 39th and 40th minutes.  She tallied seven saves at halftime.  The second half saw the Caps continue to work to get the equalizer.  In the 45th minute junior Julia Stevens had a shot on goal that was saved by the keeper.  A minute later, Cutler went back where she left off saving a shot by Wakefield's McDonald.  In the 55th minute, there was a flurry of activity in the Wolverines 18 yard box following a Caps corner kick with Brown and sophomore Savannah Jones having a go at the keeper only to be rejected.  Freshman Lucy Krueger got in on the action with a free kick on goal in the 63rd, only to be stopped.  Two minutes later junior Kelly Ann Evans had her left-footed crack at goal deflected by the post.  Wakefield didn't lie down for the second half however, and in the 70th had a shot from point blank range deflect off the post.  Another two minutes later, Cutler made a brilliant save after being challenged one-on-one by a dribbling Wolverine player.  Another Wakefield shot caromed off the post in the 75th minute.  The Caps continued to scrap for an equalizer to send the game into overtime, but it was not to happen.  Final score 2-1.  The Caps remain atop the Cap 8 table tied with Millbrook High School at 4-1.  Broughton is in action tomorrow night at 4:30/6:30 when they travel east on New Bern Avenue to Enloe High School (0-4, Cap 8).

BHS Mens Golf Remains Undefeated in the Cap 8

Broughton returned to action today with a Cap 8 Victory at Wakefield Plantation, home of the Rex Hospital Open.  The Caps finished with a combined score of 147 for a six shot victory over the second place Millbrook Wildcats.  The Caps remain undefeated in Cap 8 play.

BHS was led by Georgetown commit Harrison Rhoades with a very strong nine hole score of 35 followed closely by UNC-W commit Stephen Saleeby who carded an equally impressive 36.  Rounding out the scores for BHS were a pair of 38's from Sophomore Jimbo Stanley and Freshman Patrick Carlin.

The team returns to action on Monday where they will compete in the NC High School Invitational.

CAPS FEND OFF SPARTAN SIEGE

On Wednesday night the Sanderson Spartans' women's soccer team arrived at Broughton with one goal - to end the Caps 5 match win streak.  The determined Spartans would leave the pitch after a valiant effort, but without the result.  Broughton improved to 6-0 for the campaign, 4-0 in conference and on the top of the Cap 8 table with a 1-0 victory.

The Caps appeared slow out of the gate, but persevered under the Spartans attack.  In the 7th minute junior Sarah Grace Lasso attempted to get the Caps on top with a shot just inside the 18 yard box that was saved by the Sanderson goal keeper.  Five minutes later, junior Lily Schneider sent a pass to Lasso on the right side, who crossed the ball into the box and for an on running Emma Willard, who was unable to put foot to ball,  The sides battled on and in the 27th minute it appeared that Sanderson would strike first, but the Spartan player sent her shot from point blank range over the crossbar and through the football goal post.  With crisis averted, the Caps continued to scrap, but again, in the 38th minute Sanderson was gifted a ball inside the 18 and facing only senior keeper Allie Cutler, the Spartan player shot it wide.

Halftime gave the Caps time to regroup and make adjustments, but the second period proceeded much like the first.  Six minutes in, Willard collected a ball on the touchline and sent a shot across the goal mouth.  Five minutes later, freshman Taylor Sutter was required to make a huge defensive stop on a Spartan player that had gotten through the Caps defense into the 18.  Not 2 minutes later, Cutler parried a Sanderson shot up and off the cross bar to save yet another goal scoring opportunity.  As Sanderson coach Todd Worley used repetitive substitutions to take minutes of the clock and keep the Caps from finding their rhythm, the Caps kept shooting.  In the 57th minute, Schneider cracked a shot from distance that was saved by the keeper on the goal line.  In the 63rd, junior Julia Stevens sent a beautiful pass to a streaking Willard who got a shot off only to have it stopped by Sanderson's goal tender.  With two minutes left in regulation and extra time looking imminent, the Caps won a corner kick.  A well placed ball was deflected out of the scrum and Schneider found it with her powerful right foot and cracked a shot into the back of the net to put the Caps ahead and steal the victory!

The Caps return to Cap 8 action on Tuesday, April 7th when they travel to Wakefield High School to take on the Wolverines.  Junior Varsity kicks off at 4:30 with Varsity at 6:30.
